I am outraged that gay and lesbian partners of those who died on September 11 are not automatically going to receive the same benefits as heterosexual spouses. If September 11 has taught us anything, it's that our patriotism and love of country transcend our differences and unite us all. We were told that September 11 was the day that "hyphenated-Americans" were no more, and rather than being Italian-Americans, African-Americans or gay-Americans, we were now simply Americans, all of us together as one American family. Thursday, November 08, 2001 9:38 AM September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 I have been displaced from my apartment It is inconceivable to me that any one directly affected by the events of 9/11 would not be considered to be a victim even under what appears to be the very narrow definition provided. I have been displaced now for almost 2 months now and I have no date from the landlord as to when I will be able to move back to my home. For a number of weeks following the attack access to my apartment was extremely limited as the whole area was designated a crime scene. Even now access to my apartment is limited to business hours and I have to sign in before entering. The cost of finding alternative housing and the clean-up of the apartment (HazMat decontamination) not to mention the emotional cost is staggering. DC Dear Mr. Zwick: I want to express my opposition to any effort by the federal government to provide 9-11 victim compensation funds to "domestic partners" of unmarried survivors of the terrorist attack upon our nation. Funds disbursed through the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund of 2001 should only go to the surviving family members of those who died on 9-11. Funds must go to the widows, widowers, orphans, and other blood-related or adopted members of the family--not to unmarried sexual partners of those who died. To provide funds to "domestic partners" is to undermine the traditional definition of marriage and family to include any number of sexual liaisons between same-sex or opposite-sex unmarried couples. Many homosexuals and swinging heterosexuals, for example, engage in sex with multiple partners. Do we provide funds to each of the sexual partners? He has urged homosexuals to fight for the legalization of homosexual marriages and once legalized to "redefine the institution of marriage completely . . . . to debunk a myth and radically alter an archaic institution. . . . Friday, January 04, 2002 4:38 PM 911 survivor WTC Sept 11th was my 2nd day of what was suppose to be a three week stay for training as a Financial Advisor. I was staying in a hotel and working on the floor of the South tower. When the first plane hit we started to evacuate. Then we were told to stay where we were or go back to our offices, then our building was hit by the terrorists. I was injured physically because it took me too long to get down the flights of stairs and I had just made it outside when the tower fell and partially buried me. I was taken to Belleview but not kept in the hospital for 24 hours. I was told to "go home" and be on bed rest for 10 days and to see my doctor ASAP for further medical attention. I didn't lose any body parts, I wasn't impaled with anything, I almost, but didn't suffocate to death but I saw and heard it happen to many other victims that day. My injuries will for the most part heal but the PTSD, nightmares, headaches, inability to concentrate, fear, medication, isolation, loss of short term memory, depression, horrible flashbacks and anxiety, how can anyone say that is not a physical injury? I qualify for the Fund but many of my coworkers don't because they didn't get "physically injured" by someone's standard or they tried to make it back to their home state before seeing a doctor. PTSD is real, it was caused by this tragedy and people will die or be permanently disabled because of it. Who is going to help them? Please consider our situation and understand that PTSD and "pain and suffering" are two entirely different things. As you know, the United States has committed to uphold international human rights standards, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which prohibit arbitrary discrimination. As you consider rules for administering the relief fund, I ask that you apply basic international human rights standards, and the general principle of equality, by including among relatives eligible for compensation those who lost their life partners, as well as de facto parents or children, without regard to sexual orientation or marital status. The State of New York has already adopted such a policy, granting compensation benefits "on a showing of mutual interdependence with the victim, in recognition that anyone who shared with the victim living expenses, day to day activities and the emotional bonds of family deserves help in this time of need." Many lesbian and gay people were killed in the September 11th attacks. Since then, lesbian and gay surviving partners of those killed have had mixed results in obtaining equal treatment at the local level in the distribution of relief funds by private and state agencies. An inclusive policy on the part of the federal government would help establish an important principle for other such funds. First and foremost, I continue to be startled by the lack of recognition for parents. Historically, biblically, and genetically there is a strong life-long bond between parents and children. Parents are suffering what is considered to be the greatest loss of all. Plain and simple--parents should be financially compensated for pain and suffering. Parents have to endure the daily media and conversations in addition to their personal grief. In addition, many parents have not received the remains of their children for burial. All of these things are devastating. Being a parent does not end when your child is 20, 25, 30...; the 911 funds should reconsider the disregard being shown to parents and reallocate funds to provide the necessary support to parents. Of course a variety of circumstances exist, but there are families where parents are unable to work or have lost their employment as a result of 911. Yes, spouses and children should receive necessary benefits--but then parents. In America the divorce rate is over fifty percent, yet all 911 funds are going to spouses. The parent-child relationship is a life-long relationship and should be fairly compensated. I believe there is enough funding to address these issues. Think deeply about the role, meaning, and importance of parents. Plain and simple--parents should be financially compensated for pain and suffering.
