Tell us your story: On September 11th i was asleep and woke up about 11a.m...I turned on the t.v. to burning buildings ..I live about 20 mins..from downtown Nashville in a towm called Lavergne...so i thought i was some of those buildings on fire .A few minutes after watching it a friend of mine called me on the phone and asked me if i was watching t.v. and i said yes and asked her what had happened downtown..And she tells me that it wasn't nashville that 2 planes had crashed into the World Trade Center and it was terriosts thats did it..On that horrific day it left a very sick feeling in my stomach and i was deeply sad for the victims and their families.That day will be in my mind for the rest of my life.Today one year later was a very sad day for our nation and the families of all the victims my heart goes out to them all... Tell us your story: I was just getting out of the shower, when I received a phone call from my father telling me to go turn on the news because a plane had hit one of the World Trade Center buildings. I immediately ran to the TV and watched the news. My eyes were glued to the TV, for what seemed to be all morning long, trying to understand what had happened and then the second plane hit....and then news of the Pentagon got out. I was extrememly panicked at this point because someone very dear to me lives in Manhatten. I knew most likely they were safe, however, I was terrified of what would happen next. So I spent the next seven hours pushing a redial button on my cell phone. Then finally I got a call and a rush of relief. I will never forget that experience or the feeling I got. When I walked in something didn't seem right. some of The women had there hands to there mouths and they were standing by a radio. One woman asked me if I heard what happen. I said no. She said a plane just hit the Twin Towers. At that point I thought it was just an accident and I grabbed my orders and went back out into the warehouse. I turned on my radio and I was going through my orders and then they said another plane had just hit the other tower. I stopt everything I was doing as they said we were being attacked. The first thing that came to my mind was my wife Barbara, was she safe, was my house next, was my kids schools going to be next. I called home from my cell phone and it was just dead air, I couldn't get through, I called and called. I didn't now at the time that all the cell phones around here went dead. Do I leave work now and go home or just keep on trying, I tried again and the phone rang. I'm saying to myself please pick up. My wife answered, hello. I said, are you allright! She said, yeah, why? I said were being attacked. She said, what? I said were being attacked, they rammed two planes into the Twin Towers. I said turn on the TV. She said O my god. so we were talking for awile and then the news said they just hit the Pentagon. Tears filled my eyes, I was scared, yet happy I was talking to my wife. little did I know, others weren't so lucky. I never got up in the morning and turned on the TV, I usually read or meditated. During this time, I was 8 months pregnant with my daughter, and also helping one of my friends cope with her brother joining the Army and being deployed to England for three years. I turned on the television, and the first image I saw was the plane flying into the side of the WTC. I couldn't believe it. My hands immediately sheltered my unborn child and I immediately fell to my knees and began to pray for the obvious casualties that this had incurred. My eyes stayed glued to the television. I had to go to work that day, and I knew that it was for the best, I needed to be around people who loved and cared about me. We all stood in silence as the towers fell, and a coworker and I got down on our knees in the middle of the office and prayed for the ones who were lost and also that God would allow some to live and be found in the rubble. The next few days were very hard for me. I went into preterm labor due to the stress of the event. I was put on bedrest, and during that time the only thing for me to do was sit at home and watch the events unfold on the television. Ever since that day, I pray every morning and night for the souls of the lost, and for our President. I plan on sharing this story with my daughter someday, and hope she holds the same reverance for those people who I never knew, but hold so dear in my heart. I remember it every day of my life because I have two daughters, out in the world, whose safety I think about constantly. Tell us your story: Following is the e-mail message that I sent to my family and friends at 5:56 PM on September 11th: Hi , This morning (September 11, 2001) was a close one. My morning train was 15 minutes late this morning. Otherwise I would have been in the thick of what happened at the World Trade Center this morning. My normal daily schedule is to catch the 8:13 AM train to Hoboken. We arrive at the station around 9:00 AM. I either take a NYC Ferry or what we call the PATH train to the World Train Center. If timing is right, I'm in the World Trade Center around 9:10 AM. By the time I walk through the lower level to the upper level, I reach the outer doors around 9:15 AM. Needless to say, as you've been listening to the news, this is when the terrorist attack was taking place and the first tower was collapsing around 9:13 AM. As we were approaching the Hoboken station, around 9:00 AM, several on the train had heard the news via friends who called them on their cell phones about the WTC towers. Many already were looking out the train windows. When I saw several people looking out the window I asked what was happening, and was jolted with the news that two planes had hit the towers. As we got off the train, we were all thinking that we would be able to catch either the PATH or a NYC Ferry over to Manhattan. I think I walked about 100 feet when the announcement came, "All transportation into Manhattan has been suspended. Please listen, as we are arranging a new train schedule and will get you back to your home destinations as quickly as it is possible." Fortunately the train was announced at 10:25 AM. We sat and waited until the train was pretty full. We left at 11:00 AM. As we pulled out of the station, we could see the tremendous flames and smoke of the fire. The train passengers went silent as we watched the billowing smoke. Someone's cell phone rang. Someone then said outload, both towers are gone. As we looked, we were unable to see the towers, and yet someone behind me said, "That can't be true, I can still see them. The smoke is just hiding them." Yet it was obvious, the towers were not there! It's amazing. The normal daily ride into Hoboken is usually comfortably quiet. Most riders are reading their morning newspapers or books. A few chat with friends they've made over the years of riding trains together. As we sat waiting for the train to return back to the stations we came from earlier, conversations quickly emerged. Two men were sitting in front of me. Both were in buildings immediately next to the WTC towers. One was in an elevator when the first plane struck the tower. He went back downstairs to see what was happening. As he walked out the door the second plane hit. He said that he didn't even think twice to go back to his office. He spoke of how he ran along the battery area and headed for the Ferry area. He said that he was ready to jump into the water if he had to jump to safety. Most of us had cell phones, but were unable to reach those we wanted to call. Every so often someone's cell would ring, and a bit of news would be shared with those who were around the caller. We still haven't been able to locate one of our staff members who normally is going through the WTC at that time. I often meet her on the PATH train and walk to work with her. It is possible that she could be speaking somewhere. Hopefully she is safe somewhere! Please keep Marie in your prayer. (Marie was home preparing to leave for Providence, RI for a speaking engagement when the attack was happening.) I'm safe, but a little unnerved this evening. As I watch the news reports I am more aware that it was the stroke of a late train that kept me from being in the middle of this awful event earlier today. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: As a young girl I visited the World Trade Center all the time. My sister worked in the building. Later in life, I too would work in that building. I have been up to the top many times...have eaten at Windows on the World. I used to have breakfast at the Vista Hotel every Saturday. I have spent endless hours in the center by the Globe just watching it turn ever so slowly and watching the water ripple. That building really isn't the World Trade Center...the place of American Capitalism. That place was a Wonderland to me. A place of exploration and great memories of my childhood. A lot of people have worked in the Trade Center. I worked for four years for a retailer on the Concourse. It was a great experience and I met wonderful people--New Yorkers, Foreigners, Kids and Adults. I left New York in 1990 to move to Florida. When I saw the buildings fall down, I too was crushed and all those memories came flying back to me. You see, whenever I went back up to N.Y. to visit I would always visit this fun place of my youth. I don't think I will ever have the strength to visit that place anymore. I think it would be too hard. I was in New York about three weeks after the attack to finish up some details on my Wedding. I went up again in January for my Wedding. I did not go to the site. You see, the terrorists didn't knock down American Capitalism. They destroyed a great building with great people and great dreams. The terrorists didn't vie Americans against Americans. They united us in a common cause, FREEDOM...COURAGE...and HELPING EACH OTHER. I know people don't want to rebuild on the ground were a lot of people died. I had a friend die that day as well. But I say, rebuild it. Rebuild it taller, stronger and make it as magnificent as it once was. Build a memorial site right off the water close to the shore. Make it a tall structure inscribed with all the names of the lost souls and heros of the buildings in NY, the Pentagon and the flights. But rebuild those towers...and let the next generation have a chance to experience all the memories and feelings I had as a young girl in such a Wonderland. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a New Yorker, born in Brooklyn. My dad moved to the UK 3 years ago to work, I like the UK, but I miss home. On September 11th I was off ill, I had a cold. I was sitting downstairs in the lounge in the early afternoon here. When my younger sister shouted downstairs that a plane crash had happened in New York. I turned on the TV to see an image of the North Tower of the WTC on fire. Moments I saw the second plane hit the South Tower, at that point I began to cry, my sister and I sat in horror as we saw the replays of the plane hitting the tower. Then the Pentagon was hit, I know I was terrified at what was happening. Was this war?, who had done this to us? I tried to phone my friends back home but the lines where all busy. Surely this day could not get worse, it did. We saw the South Tower fall, and then I know I lost control and cried and cried, my sister and I hugged each other close both in tears. I know I wished I was back home then, to be with my friends in New York, to comfort them and to support my fellow citizens. I watched as the North Tower fell, in front of my eyes, so many innocent lives gone. I remember my mom coming in and wondering why her two daughters when huddled up crying and shaking. She saw the images on TV and then she cried too. My friends here in the UK, came over to see if I was ok, they too where shocked and horrified at the terrible events of the day. As the evening came and the news continued to be shown, my sister and I just sat stunned both too upset to move. We went to bed still in tears, afraid of the future and scared that this might be the end of the world. Next day I woke up, my sister and I stayed together, I had a thought that maybe I had dream't it all and it wasn't real. I would see that the Towers where ok and that I could go up the top again like I had done 3 years before. I turned on the TV and my heart sank, it was no dream. Kayleigh my sister and I felt for months after that we where in a dream world, everything was surreal. To this day I still grieve for those who died. I think in my heart I knew we were under attack as I saw the second plane curve and hit the second tower. I started to cry then I gathered the children around me. I tried to keep focused on my job but then the towers began to crumble, as they did I grabbed the phone and called my mother. I thought it may be my last chance to tell her how much I loved her. My story is rather one of radical change in attitude. I never liked New York. Was there a couple of times in 1968 when I was in the Army. Actually, I did like Greenwich Village, but by and large cared not for the City, and by association tended to not like the entire state. 9-11 changed that. In part because I felt that America had been attacked, but much deeper was the feeling of connection with all those individual people who had survived or died, firemen, policemen....everyday working people, and the horrors of that day that they endured. I used to think New Yorkers were cold and insensitive. No more. I saw incredible acts of bravery and selfless concern for others by people who in committing those acts put themselves at great risk, and, in some cases, doomed themselves. Now, when I see pictures of New York City, I seem to notice the smaller buildings more. The scenes which could be in most any small town anywhere in America. People who look just like people I see every day here in rural Kentucky. People I can feel and feel for. I say now that I love New York and it's people. A city of people who came together in the face of madness in a way that should be an example for all of us. God bless them all. I work in the customer service dept. for a large company. We heard the story of the first plane crash on the radio. We all thought that it was a freak accident. When we received word of the second crash we knew something terrible was happening. We rushed to get more radios and t.v.s . It seemed like it was happening so fast. Everytime we looked at the news something new was happening. We were all in a state of shock. We work less than a mile from a international airport. The skies were silent that morning. Our phones didn't ring all day. We were glued to the television just staring in disbelief. It was such a scary day. I felt so terrible for the families whose loved ones were being killed. Words still cannot explain how I felt that day. It is a day that I will never forget. It is a day that my children will learn about from history books. It changed our lives forever and made us stronger. God bless this country and God have mercy on the people who did these terrible things. They will need it. I don't know what woke me up but WOW. I had a wierd feeling so I turned on the TV and there was the horrible tagedy, I saw the second plane hit it was so scary. I didn't really know if I was still dreaming or not. So I didn't know if this was real or not. SO, I didn't know. Then I got a call about 9:30. It was my MOM, she was calling to tell me that the world trade center was hit by a plane. My dad worked there so it was pretty scary. The first thing that I said was" is he O.K" She said yes he was out to lunch at the time. Well I was on th ephone with my mom he called so I answered. That was the most scariest moment of my life. As I was getting myself ready, I saw on TV, that the world trade center was on fire, then when the second plane approaching I couldn;t help but wonder, couldn't the second plane see that the towers was on fire, then it too went crashing, into the second tower. I was in shock. I couldn't believe what I just witness on television. As I hurried to get my self out the door, I had to make a stop at one of the hosital's to pick up a volunteer package on a fundraiser that was being planned for the upcoming week. In the lobby, one of the nurses came to the volunteer desk and announced that another plane had cashed into the pentagon. I was breathless. Fearful Thoughts of War, what is to happen next. All I could think of was to pray, pray that where ever my adult young children were, that they would be safe. As I left the hospital to go to work which was 32 miles away at another, hospital in Arnsas Pass, I called the Administration Office, asked if they had been following the news. Everyone listen to the news that day, wondering what would be next. At the end of the day, I went to the fabric shop, looked for materical that reflected red, white and blue. It was to my amazement that other people there were wanting to hold on the the glori of our american colors. That nite, I made over 300 ribbons, I could not stop sewing until the last ribbon was made. I can still hear the sound of the sewing maching, thinking of how something so little as a ribbon could be bonding to all the people I work with and the people unknown to me in New York and across the country. By mid-morning all the ribbons mader,were given out, as one of the volunteers help me pass out ribbons, she broke out in tears, she had lived in France when the war broke out when she was a teenager and the fear and memories of that war surfaced and all I could do was embrace her and whisper, we going to be alright, we just have to Trust in God, and we must be strong for our country, that's the american way. Also that morning we had a ceremony in front of the hospital, one of the adminstritive directors ask that I make a red, white and blue wreath (soon it will be one year & it still stands)as we held our ceremony, a vet driving by on the parking lot stops his truck, gets out (age probably 70ish) watch as I placed the wreath on an essel and saluted the wreath. We were using laptop computers that were connected to the internet via the university network. As I have done on every morning I checked the news of the day on my.yahoo.com the first thing I saw was an article for a plane that flew into the WTC. My first thoughts were that it was a tragic accident and I thought it was a small private airplane. As I scrolled down the page I saw another article for a 2nd airplane that flew into the other tower. I immeadiately thought it was a terrorist attack. I still thought it was small planes though. Due to the intense volumes of traffic attempting to peruse the articles. My class started and I was concerned but not shocked as I thought they were small private planes that would not cause intense damage. My mother called me about 30 minutes later to tell me that there had been a major attack on NYC and the Pentagon. I promised her I would be home as soon as I finished my lab assignment. My partner was my friend Chris as soon as I hung up the phone I told him about the attacks. We proceeded to work at a faster pace. As the people in my class began using the network printer the news began filtering around the room after I mentioned the attack to a former navy officer that had decided to return to school. Soon my professor disappeared. She returned 10 minutes later telling us the university had been shut down along with every other university and college in the state. We wrapped up our assignments and left the building. Everyone was talking about what was happening. Rumors were abundant. It took me an hour to make a 10 minute drive. The campus police were directing traffic out of the university. Everyone was trying to leave at once. Thousands of cars were winding around the roads of the university with only two exits to the community. Once I arrived home my parents did not know where my brother was. He was a member of the Air Force and was supposed to be getting off work around the time of the attacks. My thoughts immeadiately turned to my friends that were attending college in New England. I had friends between NYC and DC. It took two weeks before I learned that my friend Angela was safe. She had been attending NYU. O?Connell, Jr. The World Trade Center belonged to everyone and yet She belong to me alone. In my world I never referred to Her as the ?Twin Towers? or ?WTC? just ?Trade Center.? I?ve watched her grow over the years. Always changing while she was growing. She was always was dressed up for every occasion. Always bright and cheerful no matter what the weather was. And, oh, at night She would shine so brightly that She took away your breath! I always took pride in being so close to her. She probably never noticed me watching her grow over time in radiant splendor. She was as alive and vibrant as any entity that ever existed. She was part human too! Her cellular make up was that of all the human beings that moved within Her day after day. I thought I would never in my lifetime see Her come to an end and die. I was there that terrible day when She stood mortally wounded. Her wounds bled Her human cells of which I witnessed five of them perish -- four men and a woman. I knew that after she sustained her second wound this was no accident and someone was trying to kill Her! I stood looking out the window nineteen floors up right across from my Beloved at 140 West Street. I stared in awe at the gaping, jagged wound in the first tower. There were great red flames and heavy black curling smoke pouring out. (I did not fear Her coming death because it was said somewhere that She could sustain a direct hit from a 747 airliner and still stand). Then as I watched I became filled with grief for the families and friends left behind those who had perished from the impact of the plane that crashed into the tower. When I saw the first man fall from the opened wound and perish right before my eyes, I was stunned into disbelief at what had happened and that what I was seeing was not happening. As I saw the second man fall, I knew this was real and was happening and unfolding right there in front of me and there was nothing I could do to stop it. Then as the third man was falling and before he perished, I quickly blessed myself making the sign of the ?Cross? and prayed for his soul. I did the same for the fourth man and the same for the fifth person, a woman. I reached up as high as I could and placed my hand upon the pane, as if I could stop the others from the same fate, and called to those that I could not see to stay back from the edge and they (fire/police) will come and rescue them. At this moment I became very angry because I was absolutely powerless to stop this and raise my eyes that I could see over the tower and into the blue sky and yelled out loud to God, ?SEE! THIS HAS TO STOP AND IT HAS TO STOP NOW!? I had to leave my building. We were told to evacuate. When I got to the street, I looked up to the tower again and just stared. I was around the area of the Brooklyn Bridge when I heard another loud noise and turned to see the Second tower fall first. The tower made a sound as if a death rattle, leaned forward, toppled while letting out its last breath and crashed to the pavement below. In watching the second tower fall, I knew the prayers that I had issued for the ones remaining that they would be rescued were not answered. Also my prayers for the people who I saw fall at the time did not seem to matter. Rescuing them had become academic. I felt that eight thousand lives died that day and part of my life too. The grief that I felt became unbearable. It wasn?t for those who just died or for myself. It was the grief, and the loss I felt for all the loved ones left behind. I believed then and there that no one had survived. I prayed for all those souls in one single prayer. The ?Act of Contrition.? I prayed that prayer for all who just died , that God would take them straight to heaven. While I silently said this prayer, it seemed that thousands of their voices joined mine at that moment and were gone with the last ?Amen.? I must let it be known that not even once did I want revenge on the ones who did this terrible deed. I knew in my heart that revenge was not going to bring back all those who had just perished or bring back my ?Trade Center.? I could only hope and pray that we would not do the same and attack blindly and kill the innocent with the guilty ones. If we did, we would be no better than the ones who just killed innocent people in those towers. It has now the third week and still I am grieving. Still weeping. But today when I had decided to write this I stopped and listen to my heart and realized that even though I had stopped crying on the outside my heart has never stopped weeping. I had wept outwardly for those that had perished and for their love ones, but I did not realize that my heart was mourning and weeping for my ?Beloved Trade Center.? Yes, I would want to have the building rebuilt. More out of spite than anything else, just to be able to go to the top of the new buildings and thumb my nose at the killers of my world and be the first to dare them to try it again! But, as in life when your beloved is taken from you, it can never be replaced. No matter how magnificent a new comer is. I pray for a new center and that it will be protected from all harm, but She will never take the place of my beloved ?Trade Center? of my world. I will call her by a new name in my new world as the ?Trade Winds? of the World.
