Tell us your story: On September 11th, 2001, it stated out a very pleasant day for most of the busy New Yorkers, going to work, to school, etc., but who knows it would end up a terrifying day for all the of us. For me, I was just going to school like usual. It was in the middle of 2nd period, when an announcement from the Principal frightened everyone single one of us. The Twin Towers had been strucked by airplanes that had been hijacked. Everyone looked so terrified because we would never think something like this would happen to the United States. For my history teacher, he looked very worried because his wife works in one of the Twin Towers. I started to get scared because my dad works pretty near the World Trade Center, but there's nothing I can do but to pray. Not long after 3rd period, my 4th period teacher told the whole class "The Twin Towers are gone.". Some of the students started crying, because some of their family members works in the Twin Towers. A few minutes later, the whole class can smell the burning rubble from the Twin Towers. After the school day, everyone was asking to report to the auditorium for a special meeting. The Principal gave us a speech about going home and staying home until it's safe to go out again. On the way home, the subways was pretty corrupted, and when I was waiting for the train to come, I saw smoke from a distance and was really horrified because I don't know what is happening at the site. When I got home,I noticed my whole family home, it felt like a ton of metal had been removed from my shoulders. I started turning the channels and was watching how the hijacking planes strucked two of the world's highest structures. I was still confused on why woudl anyone do this to the innocent civilians of the World Trade Centers. They are just innocent, hard working people just going to work and trying to make a living to support their family. None of us would ever think something like this would happen to the United States. This event has been the worst genocide in US history since the Pearl Harbor attacks. For me, I still give my deepest sympathy to the victims' families. Tell us your story: LOVE ONE ANOTHER On this day I was not even aware of what was going on until I just happend to call a girlfriend and was alerted to the happenings. I can say I saw people jumping from windows from the Twin Towers and I felt so much pain and dispare. An overwelhming fear and utter loss overcame me. The tradgey of this event is appauling. It scares me to think that one person could have a vision of the magintude and go so far to actually carry it out with out even thinking of the harm and devistation to other human beings. I have experienced tradgey once in my life and I all most did not make it back mentally. I can only imagine what the mass of people are feeling. Truly, I say to you my heart goes out to you. I wish that I knew every single one of you so that I could hold and caress you as a mother does her children. My heart breaks for you all in so many different ways. Folks we must remember that just because of one man's anger toward whomever we MUST not let it over take us. Do not stup to this level for we as a people are much better than that. I know that this is about America and all the politics, but I ask you all to over look all of that and just look at us as a nation in mourning. We are all god's children no matter what our nationality, creed, color, religion and so forth. We all hurt as one and can heal as one. It simply doesn't matter what your status in life is rich, poor, middle-class or even homeless because if you stop and think about it at one point and time in everyone's life we were all at each of these stations. To be rich you had to have been poor once or twice or maybe more. To be middle-class you had to be poor once or twice or more. To be poor you must have been born in to poverty. Again, no matter what your status we are all the same inside. We all bleed red blood. We all have emotions. We all do alot of things just the same as any one else. Be more aware of who you are and the people around you. Experience other culturls for doing this will help you to understand that person, how they think, their customs, their thought process and them as a fellow human being. I love all people no matter who you are. The folks of 9/11/01 have truly been done an unjust tradgey and it will take a monumental amout of time for healing to take place, but folks please remember that god is not the one who brought this tradgey upon us. It was man, a man, who had the vision and wanted to create such mass kaos & dispare. I personally would like to know how in the hell does some one so out of tune with the world and reality get so many people to follow such crazly planed thoughts. I went to first period Spanish class and then to English. We were working on an essay about the Taliban. My teacher was explaining what the Taliban was to me. After that class, I went to my social studies class and everything changed becasue of the attack in New York City. Right as I entered the class, a friend of mine came up to me saying that a plane had attacked. I did see the second plane hit the building on the T.V. They attacked two buildings in New York. When the airplane flew at the building I was very scared. I just watched it and didn't talk to anyone. I didn't want to stay in school. Instead I wanted to be home with my family. On the T.V. I heard people yelling. I also saw people jump out of the building. On the news on T.V., I saw a lot of people die. I saw the people run and how scared the people were when they saw the building go down. I had never seen something like this in my country, Mexico. Now my life is different. I am scared this will happen again in the United States. I'm scared of another surprise attack because we don't know how many people do not like the United States. Immediately I was captivated as I noticed all of the news was on a flaming tower 1 of the world trade center with tower 2 already gone. Alarmed by what I saw I proceeded to my roomates bedroom to tell him to turn on his television. By the time he did so tower two had already collapsed. I had to be at work that day and was rushing to get to my job and figure out what was going on. My work place was a buzz with the tragic events that had unfolded that day. Some in tears, some distraught, many of us requested manage set up a television in a closed section of the restaurant in order for us to stay informed on what was going on. Some of us had family in the area of New York, D.C, and Penn., as well as numerous others on flights throughout the eastern seaboard of the Nation. I will never forget where I was on that tragic day and I will always remember the heartache I felt as I pondered on the sudden end of so many lives. But I would not really feel the full effects until a couple of days later when I came to find out that one of my friends from high school (Sanford School, Wilmington, DE), was in the WTC. Initially, Davis "Deeg" Sezna, was reported as missing. But as the days progressed, things didn't look too good. He worked for Sandler O'Neill, and he had recently just gotten the job. When Deeg's body hadn't been recovered, his family decided to have a memorial service in his honor. This was a sad event as my high school was a close knit school. Most of the people from our class were in attendance, as were many other people whose lives Deeg touched. Deeg was a son, brother, and friend, and we will never forget the impact that he had on our lives! As always I had to work,but my friend from Germany was supposed to arrive today, and I had waited for that for a very long time. After I got up, I took care of the three children I watch after. The mom I am babysitting for went out to run some errands and to go to the gym. Around nine-thirty, she gave me a call from the gym and asked me to turn on the TV. She told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center in NY City. So I turned it on and was stunned. It looked so unreal and it felt like a movie. The mom soon returned and we could not take our eyes of the TV. The second plane had hit the second towere and the Pentagon was in flames. And then it hit me. What about my friend? Where is she? Did her plane turn around? Are there more attack out of the sky? So I called her dad in Germany, but he was to stunned and could not even give me the airline she was flying with. I tried to get in contact with the people she was supposed to stay, and I learned the airline and flight she was supposed to come in witth. Further enquireies about her were not possible for me to make because the phone lines were bu that time so jamed up that I only got a busy signal. With horror we watched when the towers collapsed and so many lives were lost in a hardbeat. It was so unreal, and it was beyond our understanding how someone could do such a thing. Tears came into our eyes and we had to cry for a long time. My employers husband came home at around noon because they shut down everything, and we were relieved that he was home safely. Many hours after the first plane hit the tower, I was finally able to find out where my friend was. Her plane was not able to turn around and go back to Germany. Her plane was in Canada, in a place I had never heard of. I was so relieved to find out that she was safe. I also tried to reach my parents in Germany and was able to get through the phone after three p.m. I just had a great need to talk to them and find out that they were o.k. too. My parents were also relieved that I was fine. We talked together for a long time, but nobody was able to really understand what had happened and why. This time it was really hard for me to put down the phone and be seperated from them. I wished I could have been home. Late at night, I went to bed and tried to go to sleep. That was not that easy. All the images of that day came back in a flash, and it seemed like a movie. It was clear that nothing would be the same again after that day. So many lives were lost, so much destruction took place, and so many hearts were broken. This day will always be in our memories and will never be forgotten. I can remember one of my co-workers sticking their head in my office saying that they heard on the radio that a plane had flown into one of the World Trade Center towers. Several of us immediately went to one of the conference rooms with a tv to see what had happened. We had no more than sat down when we watched the second plane fly into the second tower. At first, I thought we were watching a video of the first plane, but the smoke and fire proved otherwise. I immediately thought back to the 1993 bombing. My great-aunt's son, David Jones, worked on one of the upper floors of the tower with the visitor's center on top of it. It had taken him 2.5 hours to make it down the stairwells that day. I knew he was trapped and would be lucky if he survived the flames and smoke. I knew that David was dead (I learned later that day that his company had recently relocated to another building near the Empire State Building and that he was safe). The next thing I knew the first tower collapsed. No one in the room could believe what was happening. We never expected anything like this. To this day (exactly one year later), I still cannot comprehend why anyone would do anything like this. As the rest of the day unfolded, two more planes crashing, the second building collapsing, the Pentagon burning, President Bush being swept away to secure locations, etc., I was in complete shock. The faces on the people as they fled the debris cloud from the collapsing building is an image I will never forget. I stayed glued to the tv and radio for weeks as the death tolls continued to fall and the case for invading Afghanistan continued to rise. I was filled with a mix of pride and sorrow for my fellow Americans and a sense of fear for myself, my family and for my unborn child (my wife was barely 1 month pregnant at the time). Everyone seemed to know somone who was directly affected by the attacks. Everyone was afraid. The first plane I heard overhead later that week sent me to my knees in fear. To this day, I still watch the skys for planes and wonder if everything is okay on the flights. Now we sit and wait for the next attack, hopefully that it will be prevented and praying that when it does happen, no one we know will be directly affected. One of my Inspectors interupted a meeting to say "a plane has crashed in america" My first thought was so what? but it became clear that this was something that would change all our lives. Our class just finished the first day of ISTEP and our teacher told us some shocking news that two planes crashed into the World Trade Center. We turn on the TV and we see the headline "World Trade Center Towers Collsape, Thousands Feared Dead and Missing." Other headlines talked about a plane hitting the Pentagon and another crashing in a field in Pennsylvania. After we got out of school (it was a half day) all of us went home shocked and stunned about this horrific news. After dropping my daughter off at her school I arrived at work and started the daily routine. A co-worker said she was told an airplane had flown into one of the World Trade Center Buildings. We went into our conference room to watch the news that was on to cover the event. We watched the tower burning and like a scene from a movie saw the second plane fly into the screen and hit the second tower. There was a feeling on unreality. Then a little later (we didn't look at the clock) the Pentagon was hit and then another plane crashed. There was fear, even though no one said anything, you could sense it in the air! What ws going to happen next? Would we, the South Florida area be a target? Was the entire Country at risk? I didn't know at the time the time but two people I knew were in that first building hit. One would survive ( a co-workers son) and the other who worked for Cantor-Fitzgerald died with his brother. He had twin daughters that my daughter had gone to school with in our christian school for six years. It made me realize how easily someone close to you can be taken. I am grateful that God spared my family the grief that the victims family have and continue to go through and I feel truly blessed for that. It made me Proud to be and American when I saw how we banded together like one huge family does when one of theirs is hurt or threatened form outside sources. We will get through this and become stronger because of this tragedy. I will NEVER forget that day or the ones that lost their lives! Little did I know that the event that were about to happen would change the lives of every american. These events would be the biggest and bring the most change of anything thats ever happend in my life. I went to 2nd hr that day and everything seemed strange the teachers were talking. Then they turned on the t.v and told us about all the people, families, and destruction. I couldnt imagine how people could have such regard for human life. The next few weeks I still thought alot about what had happend . Then my parents, grandmas, and aunt all went on a trip to Sweden. I remember being so scared I didnt even want them to go and i through a huge fit. That brought back everything that had just happend. It's almost the one year anniversary of probley the greatest single american tradgety and I personally will never forget. Earlier I had been lazing around the house, 8 months pregnant. I hadn't turned on the TV or the radio that day. It was a little after 11 am when I first heard. I had just turned on the radio in my car. I was listening to Dan Rather reporting on the tragedy that had just unfolded. Just then, my cell phone rang. It was my mother's best friend. " YOur mother has been trying to reach you for hours! Are you ok? Where are you?" My cell hadn't received any calls because the lines were tied up. My mom lives in Seattle. She was worried because I live very near NSA and she thought that it may be another target. " I'm ok, I'll call her." I called my mother and we cried. I prayed that this was the last of the destruction and that everyone would be ok. " Please God, be with those people, comfort them and keep them safe." At that point I hadn't realized the utter destruction that had been caused. Today, my heart is still heavy at thoughts of those who perished and those who live to tell the story of what happened that day. I did not know anyone who died on September 11, 2001. But they are in my heart everyday. I cry every time I hear Lee Greenwood's "God Bless the USA". It means so much to me as an American to be part of this great country. I heard my husband answer it and then I started to worry. No one would call us at that hour. Jonathan yells for me to come to the phone and as i reach for it he runs to turn on the tv. Since it was my birthday, I really didn't care about anything except to have the best day of my life. But when I stepped into Pre-Algebra that morning, all I heard from other kids was, "Did you hear what happened?", or "Wow, I can't believe it..." I really had no clue what was going on, so our teacher turned the television on after lessons had ended, and there it was: destruction. We lost people, buildings, the stock market crashed, majority of our citizens lost their work place, and most of all we lost the pride of America. This day couldn?t have been planned any better. It caught America when we least expected it and caused a lot of people to think what was going to happen next. People were scared, crying, praying, wondering about their love ones, and people were shocked and confused about what just happened. This day will always be remembered as THE DAY THAT SILENCED AMERICA. My reactions on September the 11th were a fear about what was going to happen next, I was confused, lost, speechless, and I felt sorry for the people who lost their love ones. I was real fortunate not to have any of my family or friends involved in any of the attacks but my heart and prayers goes out to the families who lost their friends or family or who haven?t heard anything yet about their love one. It?s amazing how we all have different views about that day. What I mean is that you have some people who wanted to start a war with Bin Laden and others who thought violence wasn?t the key to the solution. I favored both sides. A part of me wanted to attack back and another part of me knew violence never solves anything. So I believed what ever is meant to be or meant to happen will happen, no matter what. I just pray that they catch Bin Laden and end the war at hand. I believe America is a strong nation and it will never give up or accept defeat. After the attacks on America that day I really admired the work of our firefighters, police officers, rescue workers, and soldiers. They put their lives on the line to save the people involved in the attacks. I don?t know about you but that takes a lot of guts to enter a building, that you know that you might not make it out alive and for that they have all of my love support, generosity, and prayers with them. I pray that the ones who were lost in the collapsing buildings, families know how much I appreciate their love ones and how I pray for you and your family to be happy and once again start to live your lives. I know that?s easier said than done but I pray that you can. I believe your love one is I a safer and more peaceful place. I also like how America as a whole came together after the attacks. People became closer to each other, families spent more time with one another, people let their grudges go that they had with one another, and people started living for today and not tomorrow. Citizens of America started to show their patriotic side by wearing the colors of the flag, having the flag or stickers attached to their cars, and most of all having peace with each other. America is a nation that will never die or give up and for that fact, I? am proud to be an American citizen. It feels good to say in May that America has rebounded from the attacks and is getting stronger each day. I just pray America will reign tall once again. Tell us your story: Three of us had flown into Indianapolis the evening of Sept 10 to install some software and train the software users at a human service agency. The next morning I was shaving and had the TV in the motel on to listen to the news. I stuck my head out of the bathroom to see the picture when the anchor said that a small plane had run into the World Trade Center. There was too much smoke for a "small plane" to have hit the building. Just as I was about to go back to shaving the second plane hit the other tower. As I looked at the images of all the pieces of paper fluttering down I thought, "There goes a lot of pension fund records". And then I was struck with the brilliance of the method: they used our planes to destroy our buildings. Almost immediately afterwards I felt a deep sadness for all the families and started praying for them to be comforted. Such a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. I knew that life for all of us on the planet had just changed. Those events in NYC marked a line in history: there was before 9/11 and afterwards. Tell us your story: On that day I can remember taking my kids to school & daycare like I normally did and then coming home to work as I work out of my house. It seemed to be a typical day as I picked up the phone and started to make calls. I called my other office to see what was happenening and I remember the voice on the other end of the phone saying that I wouldn't believe what was happening turn on your TV. I did just that and sat there stunned for quite a while in disbelief. Later in the day I began to make more calls and began to find out what was happening w/the gas prices in the midwest, and how nobody wanted to take any loads from me as they were scared about what was happening w/the fuel and the country. So, during lunch time I ran out and fueled up my vehicle because I knew that the fuel scare was out there and it was coming our way. After picking up my children, I had to run to the grocery store. The gas station at the store had a line up of cars that was unbelievable. My son asked many questions why?? That night after speaking w/our children we let them see a little of the news so that they could try to understand what was happening. Later on that night, my son(3yrs) took all his hotwheels and lined them along the back of the couch in a perfect line. When asked why he did that, he said "Mommy, it is my gas line!!" Then I looked at my daughter (7 yrs) and she had taken a sticky note off of my desk and had drawn a picture of a building with an airplane hitting it with the date and had stuck it to our refrigerator. I couldn't believe how much of an impact it had on these children and how much they absorbed of what was going on. It brought tears to my eyes and just made me want to hold on them tighter. Tell us your story: Of all the days I could have picked to begin my one-year study abroad term in Europe, I managed to pick perhaps the strangest day in my lifetime: September 11th, 2001. As an educational experience that I had been planning for several years, I arrived with a number of uncertainties in mind. I felt very small and weak as an individual so far away from home, so distant from anyone that I knew. Little did I know, the nervousness surrounding my arrival abroad would soon fade among the awful images of the frantic situation in New York and the devastating headlines. Now just hours after my arrival in Switzerland, I was like any jet-lagged person. It was a beautiful afternoon, but I certainly didn't have the energy to do any exploring. I had lugged my year's worth of luggage to the hostel, and I had no desire to go any further. While I was waiting for my room to become available, I figured I could kill some time sitting in the lobby. Little did I know, I had chosen what would soon become a theatre for the tradgic events. The first five minutes or so that I saw the images on the hostel's television, I had nothing to say. It truly was difficult to digest what was actually happening. After all, I was badly jet-lagged and still a bit caught up with analyzing where I was in my own life. The next five minutes I started to realize how closely connected I was with these events....I flew from Dulles airport one day earlier than the attacks. I had been at both the Pentagon and the World Trade Center several weeks earlier. My father had worked at the Pentagon but had luckily retired a couple years earlier. Several of my close neighbors still work in the Pentagon. The next five minutes was dominated by a sense of disbelief. How could this be? How could I have picked such a strange day to arrive in Switzerland? Is there any way this could just be a bad dream? As time continued I became really sad and for a variety of reasons. First and foremost I was sad that anyone could ever be convinced that this type of action would advance their cause. I continue to be haunted by very thought of being one of the people on those planes. I was deeply saddened by the thousands of people in the World Trade Center that lost their lives as nothing more than participants in a system that millions of people live within each day. As an American surrounded by mostly non-Americans, I felt a genuine sense of sympathy from almost everyone in my presense both that day and in the weeks and months following. The only exception was actually a Canadian who made what I felt was a truly inappropriate remark on the day of the attacks, basically suggesting that this sort of event was something that the US brings upon itself. Even if that was someone's opinion, September 11th wasn't the time to express it. I never forgave him for that. Many conversations and months later, I'm still very saddened by the events of the 11th. I continue to feel that the average person fails to see the strength of the economic connections between advanced nations. While I am a rather strong critic of some aspects of American culture, I feel strongly that the government and the system of markets that it backs is made of people who do care about solving international problems. As pointed out in a recent edition of the Economist, poverty is being reduced at a faster rate than at any point in history. Advanced nations have a responsibility to work harder to solve international problems like poverty, but the type of mindset that lies behind terrorists should not be underestimated. The US is right to react with a thorough military response and as superpower, should continue to lead in this fight with whatever means available...intelligence, military, security measures, foreign policy, etc. There's work to be done on all levels.
