THE PRESIDENT OF THE COMPANY TURNED THE NEWS ON AND THAT IS WHEN I FIRST SAW THE IMAGES OF THAT TRAGIC DAY. I REMEMBER THAT AS I SAW THE IMAGES ON THE TV MY FIRST THOUGHTS WERE "OH MY GOD ALL THOSE PEOPLE". I REMEMBER THINKING THAT THIS WAS ALL HAPPENING RIGHT OVER THE BRIDGE. IF I WERE TO DRIVE DOWN THE STREET I WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE EVERYTHING. THE PRESIDENT DECIDED THAT IF WE ALL FELT SAFER WE COULD GO HOME. ALL I COULD THINK ABOUT WAS BEING WITH MY FAMILY. I NEVER FELT AS MUSCH ANGER TOWARDS A PERSON AS I FELT THAT DAY WHEN I HEARD THAT COWARD, OSAMA BIN LADEN, NAME ON THE BROADCAST. ONE MONSTER COULD TURN OUR WORLD UPSIDE DOWN. I COULDN'T EVEN COMPREHEND EVERYTHING THAT WAS GOING ON. AS I SAT WATCHING TV I COULD HEAR THE JETS FLY OVER MY HOUSE. IF I WENT ONTO THE FRONT LAWN AND LOOKED UP I COULD SEE THEM FLYING BY. AS I CROSS THE GEORGE WASHINGTON BRIDGE NOW I DON'T SEE IN THE DISTANT THE TOWERS. I NEVER NOTICED HOW SYMBOLICLY IMPORTANT THEY WERE UNTIL THEY WERE GONE. THAT DAY CHANGED THE LIVES OF ALL AMERICANS, OF ALL HUMAN BEINGS. SINCE 9-11 I CHERISH EVERY DAY THAT I COULD WALK ON THIS EARTH. SO MANY INNOCENT PEOPLE WERE LOST ON THAT DAY. A CO-WORKER CAME INTO MY OFFICE AFTER HIS WIFE HAD CALLED TO TELL HIM TO TURN ON THE NEWS. I CHANGED TO WLS THEN BEGAN LISTENING TO THE DESCRIPTION OF EVENTS THAT WERE UNFOLDING AT THAT MINUTE. MY EX-HUSBAND AND I HAD VISITED THE TWIN TOWERS BACK IN THE 70'S AND IT WAS QUITE AN EXPERIENCE. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Even though I wasn't at any of the "Ground Zero" areas, I was away from home and biological family members. My work colleagues had the good fortune to be staying with her sister and I can tell you it was very comforting to be at someones "home" during that time! We were supposed to fly back to our homes in Colorado on September 12, 2001 and I cannot thank Fran & Pete enough for taking us in until arrangements could be made to get back home! We ended up "buying" a car to make the trip, which broke down in Ohio, leaving us "stranded" again for the weekend in a strange town waiting for the car to be assessed. A rental car was what finally got us home almost 2 weeks after that day burned in our memories. Grateful to be home again, our shock and grief didn't hit us until a few days later and we were all "basket cases" for an entire 2 days. That whole month turned out to be disastrous. Five days after my return, my husband was killed in a terrible car accident (Sept. 24, 2001) which just added to my grief. His funeral was held in Laramie, Wyoming on our anniversary date September 29, 2001. Needless to say, I grieve for every person effected by those events, however, it has also been difficult, both emotionally and financially for those of us who weren't actually "at" the terrorist attack sites. Tell us your story: I remember I heard about how the Trade Center was hit by an airplane on the radio on the way to a morning care lady on the hillside. I didn't think much about it, probably because I had no clue what the World Trade Centers even were. When I got to her house, my dad her what was going on, and then she started going crack-a-lackin'! She turned on the TV, and everything was on the same thing- "Terrorists Bombing," "World Trade Centers on Fire," etc. The entire morning, she sat fixated on the TV. I went to school where most people, like me, didn't even know what the buildings were, and therefor, we didn't really talk about it. The teachers sure did though. After school, once I had taken the bus to to my childcare persons house, she was still sitting there on the couch in the same spot. She seemed to be sleeping wiith her eyes and mouth open. I couldn't think of why so many calls were comming in so early in the morning. I hurried to get out and the next call was from my husband telling me that terrorists were attacking the U.S. and to turn on CNN. I don't think I have ever gotten dressed so fast in my life. I remember my heart was pounding so hard that I couldn't even hear my children talking to me. I don't think that I have ever experienced such intense fear in my life. I know that my children were terrified by the way I was acting, they were only 4 and 1 at the time and had no idea what was going on except that mommy was scared to death. I remember turning on the tv and every station had the same picture of the 1st tower in flames. Not a minute after I turned it on I saw the 2nd plane hit and I remember grabbing my kids and falling to the ground in tears. I know they were scared to death but I could think of nothing except holding my kids as close as possible, I guess in a vain attempt to protect them. My 4 year old son Jakob asked me why I was crying and I told him that some very bad men had done some scary things to our nation but that we were going to be ok. I was praying so hard that this would be true. It was very hard to answer all of his questions, especially while trying not to scare either of my children. I sat in my living room floor for an untold amount of time just holding my kids, crying and praying, the images so horrible, yet I wasn't able to tear my eyes away. I didn't want my children to see such horrible images, yet I couldn't let them out of my site, or take my hands off them. It seemed like our world was comming to an end and I was powerless to protect my babies. I thank God that Jakob and Annalise are young enough that they don't truly understand what happened that day and are not experiencing the fear that most of us live with everyday now. We had a very close family friend that is in the army and has been in Afghanistan in the 101st for several months and my baby Jakob prayed every night that God would help Jesse put the bad guys in jail who are trying to hurt our country. It's a prayer I know, that every mother hoped to never have to hear, yet I know that it is common place now. About 10 o'clock that morning my mother called and wanted me to meet her at the gas station to fill up on gas, she was scared that our economy was going to freeze and gas prices would shoot through the roof, she wasn't the only one for about the time we got through pumping the lines started forming everywhere. From the gas station we went straight to Wal-Mart to stock up on some neccessaties. It was the eariest feeling I have ever had to walk into a Wal-Mart that is totally silent. Everyone in the store was gathered around the televisions that hang from the ceiling in the front of the store. The only sound was muffled crying and gasps of horror and disbelief. I raced through the store grabbing ravioli and peanut butter and as I left people started pouring in. I thought it's just a matter of time before this place is a madhouse. My best friend Christin and my mother joined me at home and we spent the rest of the day on the couch watching CNN, crying and fielding phone calls. I was so upset at my husband for not leaving work and comming home to be with us, but I realize now that our world did not stop, jobs still had to be done and people still had to go on even though we wanted to do anything but. It seemed like all we did for weeks was sit around in disbelief watching the news. I know that for the rest of my life I will remember that day as if it were yesterday, and as horrible as it was I pray that everyone else will too. For it is when these things begin to fade from our memory that the most important things like family, faith, freedom & liberty are taken for granted. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My wife and I were taking a few days vacation and staying in St. Louis. We were visiting the St. Charles area. On 9-11 we were going to pick up my wifes brother and go to the new Bass Pro Shop there. As any hunter or fisherman can tell you going to the Bass Pro Shop is like a kid going to the toy store. I had just gotten dressed and was checking out the news. When I turned it on they were showing the first tower and saying that the rumor was that a plane had crashed into it. To say the least I was shocked but I only half believed the story because the early rumors are usually wild. My wife had just gotten out of the shower and I was telling her about it. She came out and sat down to watch and at that moment the second plane crashed into the other tower. We were completely dumbfounded. We sat there for quite a while just staring at the TV. We were finally able to talk but we didn't know what to say. We got ready and went to her brother's house where we told him about it so he turned the TV on. The three of us sat around for some time trying to make sense of it. We decided to go on to the Bass Pro Shop anyway and figured once the initial shock was over things would pretty much be the same as usual. None of us could really get into the spirit of the trip after what we had witnessed. We tried but how can you go on like nothing had happened. After lunch we started to take John back to his place but we got stuck in a horrible traffic jam. They were closing everything down in St. Louis. People were rushing to buy gas and everything else they could. We went out for dinner And there were only two other tables occupied. I guess most people were going home. To say the least the rest of our vacation was pretty subdued. We tried to carry on but it was difficult. We have not let that horrible day keep us from leading our lives. That would be giving the people responsible exactly what they were hoping for. We still think about it and pray for the friends and families of the victims but we all have to move on. This is out Pearl Harbor. I guess all generations have to deal with some tragedy but I hope that it is a very long time before anyone has to deal with something of these proportions. Our agency attorney had come into my office area and stated that a plan had hit the World Trade Center in New York. I immediately followed him to the conference room where a TV was showing the fire and smoke from the impact. A second plane then hit, and we were in shock. I knew I had to try to do some work and went back to my office. I had to pass the conference room and stepped in to see what was being said about how this happened and they were reporting about the plan hitting the Pentagon. At that moment, I felt such dread and horror. I ran down to our office to tell a fellow worker a about the Pentagon and we both returned to the conference room. We stood there in shock and disbelief. How could this have happened? How could there be people on this earth that could actually do something like this? It was totally incomprehensible. We went back to our office and tried to listen to what was happening on the radio; but it was too distracting. We requested that TV on so that we could see, as well as hear. It seemed to be less distracting. I was glancing at the TV across the room when it started to collapse. It was unbelievable. Everywhere I went in our agency, TV's had been set up and other workers were listening to all that was going on in New York and Washington D.C. There were expressions of shock and dismay on all the faces I saw throughout the day; and I could not tear myself away from the TV as it reported on the attacks. I can only imagine the grief, anger and other emotions being felt by the people that had family and/or friends in the buildings that had been hit. I felt guilty being relieved that I had not known someone and was not personally involved. But my sorrow was not lessened by those people. I am proud of my country and the way my fellow Americans have acted in the face of this tragedy. I am very proud of our President and the heartfelt words he spoke. There responce was something just hit the World Trade Center in NY. I was totally asttonded I felt that someone must be making a practical joke. But as I passed the waiting room TV screens all the stations were focusing on the Towers when the second plane hit the second Tower. I was jolted into the realization that things would never be the same again. As I sat in my office surrounded by the people I work with, all from NY by the way. It was a very emotional day for us. While some of us took it so very hard not knowing if our families were safe I just continued to work with the idea that a least one of us had to maintain calm and some semblance of organization for our patients that were scheduled that day. Now I realize that this was my own way of dealing with the disaster. As time passed I feet calmer and I now know that all my people are safe. I put on a cable news channel and saw a tower burning. It was strange. The announcers had first thought that it was a plane that went terribly off course. i was drawn to it but not concerned. Then there was the crash into the 2nd tower. This was no accident. I sat in silence, staring at the television. It didn't seem real. Such a "foreign" vision so close to home. I watched for hours more- the crash into the Pentagon, a phantom car bomb in D.C., the crash in Pa. It didn't seem real. I went outside and was struck by the utter quiet and beauty of that late summer day. The sky was deep blue with little white puffs of clouds. A perfect day to skip work was to become the biggest nightmare this country has ever seen. One last thing struck me that day. After hearing that the FAA had "closed" the skies to air travel...I still would hear an occasional plane. Some were military but others were not. All I thought was "Here comes another one, where's it gonna hit?" My wife callled many times from work that day before she was let out early. "Don't go on the roads, they could try to blow up bridges or hi-ways." And I thought..."don't let 'them' take our freedom away. Don't let 'them' keep us off our streets". If we allow that- our country and our ideals have lost. I'm proud to say that we did not hide, we did not cower. We have gone along as we have before- but in a more vigilant and appreciative way. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Sept. 11, 2001 began like most usual duty days at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center, Ft Gordon, GA. I was at my desk sorting through the various assignments, administrative taskings, and ongoing projects that needed to be addressed and completed. I was also waiting for one of my NCOs (non-commissioned officers) to call me with details about her upcoming assignment to Europe. I'd sent her to our Personnel Administrative Center to get the details of when she was to report to her next assignment. I vividly remember her call shortly after the 1st tower was hit. There was apprehension in her voice. She said she was at the Personnel Administrative Center and heard on the radio a plane hit the World Trade Center. She didn't know any other details. I immediately thought this was a small commuter plane and although sad, it wasn't that big of a deal...after all, small planes have crashed into buildings before. I told her to finish up her business and report to me with the details of her next assignment. Before my NCO came back, I received a call from my wife, who also worked on post. Her office had a television and routinely had it on the post information channel and other cable news channels to stay abreast of news events. My wife told me airplanes hit BOTH of the World Trade Center Towers. I quickly began thinking this was NOT a coincidence but still didn't know the full magnitude of what was happening. My first thoughts were two small commuter planes hit each tower. A terrorist attack - probably. We DID have vague warnings of attacks on military installations prior to that day. On Ft Gordon, as on every other US military installation, we had already became what is known as a "closed post", meaning anyone without a car sticker and proper ID would be stopped and questioned at the gate. I thought it was inconceivable two large commercial airliners could hit the towers almost simultaneously. My NCO came back and reported. She was still shaken about the first tower being hit. I told her I just found out the second tower was hit. She did not know this and again expressed her fear. I told her not to worry too much and carry out the rest of her duties. She then left my office. Very shortly after my NCO left, my wife called me again and told me an airplane hit the Pentagon. My first thoughts were, "We are being attacked and are at war." My Colonel boss walked in my office and told me airplanes hit the two trade towers and I told him the Pentagon was also hit. The disbelief showed on his face for a moment then he replied, "this is really serious", and I nodded to him indicating that I realized this. We went to an office with a television and watched the news reports, redundant because all channels were showing the same tragic pictures. I remember watching the first trade tower collapse and thought to myself, "Oh, my God, there is nothing anyone can do to stop this." I knew the second tower would collapse in a short amount of time and said this out loud. One of the secretaries responded, "Do you really think so?" I indicated yes. She asked, "but what about all the people?" I merely said that I hoped as many could get out as possible. After awhile my boss returned and advised that all airplanes were ordered to land immediately. There were still eleven planes unaccounted for and a possibility they would be shot down. Never in my life has all airplane traffic been ordered to land. (For several days after it was eerie to not see or hear any air traffic.) Later in the day we had a Command Briefing about the terrible incidents of the day. Everyone knew by this time that this was no accident but a deliberate action of war against our nation. As members of the Armed Forces we realized we very well might be called upon to defend our country. Most people seemed ready to do whatever needed to be done. It seemed the only news presented was what we'd already seen and heard on the television. We were advised to be prepared and to leave for work early the next day. How early, no one knew. The next day and for several days after the attacks, there was nothing but mass chaos and traffic jams trying to get onto post. It took me almost an hour to "drive" the 1.5 miles to the hospital. It was almost comical to see people parking their vehicles a mile from the gate and walking to work. Many were picked up by vehicles in the front of the line and driven to their duty stations. Everyone was very patient and understanding for we had entered an era that was totally unknown to us. On Sept. 11, 2002 we still are not sure what will happen but we stand ever vigilant and ready. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Karl Hill 6/6/02 Period-5 911 My day on September 11,2001 started out like it usually does with me getting up at 6:30 AM. I had no clue this was going to happen when I woke up. It was a Tuesday and I normally watch the news but it was early and the attack had not happened yet. When I got to school, I went to my locker to get my books and materials for the day. My first period class was English with Mr. Bellonte and it was a regular day. Third period was science class and I remember being there and sitting down expecting another day to begin just like every other. Miss. Kersch turned on the television news and the class saw pictures of the planes hitting the World Trade Center in NYC, the Pentagon and some place in Pennsylvania. On the news you could hear people screaming and jumping from the buildings. I was not sure what was happening and didn't know if this was real or not. Everyone was just sitting there staring at the television. Miss Kersch was the first to speak and she couldn't believe the World Trade Center had been blown up. Both towers burned for a while as the firemen and police were trying to put it out and save the people. As I was watching the South Tower fall, we could see on the television another plane coming towards the other tower. Soon after the other tower fell, there were huge clouds of smoke and debris falling through the air onto the people who were running away. I felt bad for the people in the towers and planes. At this time, everyone felt it was an accident because we didn't know about the terrorists. Later, when I found out about the terrorists, I felt we should just go and bomb the country they came from. The FBI got a tape of Osama bin Laden and his companions joking and laughing about the Trade Centers being hit. Osama bin Laden told us on the tape that he sent his people to kill others in the Trade Center, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. The name of Osama bin Laden's group is the A'Queda and the Taliban is another group. For a number of days, I felt sorry for the people who died and were injured. Many of the firemen and policemen were killed along with many innocent people. The final death total was about 3,200 killed by the terrorists. The two twin towers of the World Trade Center were standing tall until all of a sudden, Islamic terrorists crashed planes into it. The building fell to ground zero, killing 3,000 citizens. Everyone in New York City, especially the loved ones of the dead people were deeply affected. Some were filled with fury, some burst into tears, and others felt a combination of both. I saw it all happen on the news after school at my house. I never knew such a thing like this would ever happen in my entire life. After a while, my mom drove me to my clarinet lesson. While I was waiting for my lesson, my mom turned on the TV, and we looked at it closely. I knew I was going to see the plane crash again. My mom was very upset at what happened, and so was I. Those people did not deserve to get murdered in a tragedy like this. By the time I got home, I told my sister Jackie, but she told me that she saw it also, and she did not look very happy at all. My dad and the three of us discussed this at the dinner table. Since I felt anger and sadness in myself, I did not feel like saying a word. I just ate slowly in silence. I took my shower quickly and got ready for bed, feeling depressed. I was thinking about school, figuring that they would say some special announcements, and I was right. It turned out just as I thought. At school, my teachers, friends, and other classmates also had a different emotion towards the world. As class periods went by, we had periods of silence. We sang ?God Bless America? and walked through the adorned hallway. It had photos of the event along with American flags and newspaper articles on the plane crash. I went home on the bus and watched TV, seeing President Bush. President Bush made a speech that lasted a couple of hours, saying that he is going to declare war against the terrorists for knocking down the World Trade Center. He expressed his anger throughout his speech. At the end, his quote was ?You are either for us or you are for the terrorists.? I have also seen the Super Bowl 36. While a rock band was playing, there was a giant television screen with the names of the people who died during the tragedy. People holding American flags and signs reminded me of what happened in New York City. I was lucky I saw the World Trade Center 1 year before the 9/11. Terrorism does take place in the world today, but we will not let it happen in the United States of America. I thought I was hearing like a sample of a movie or something. I almost crashed, I thought the world was coming to an end. I just kept hearing planes crashed here, planes crashed there. When I got to work I went crazy screaming to everyone, like is this the end or what. They had to calm me down. I didn't know anyone in New York but just the thought. So many people died I felt like I knew someone. My husband is the military and I was so nervous that he would have to go to New York, to help out. As I drove into the drive and parked I thought Oh my gosh! I turned the ignition off and ran into the house and found my husband watching the news and as we watched together we saw the second plane hit the Twin Towers. I looked at hubby and said was that a second plane? Moments later my question was answered by the news stating a second plane has hit the second tower. As the day progressed I cried for those still trapped inside. Finally I couldn't watch anymore. I just held my family(my husband and 4children tight) I got on the Internet and went into news chatrooms and heard about people jumping out of windows, my heart hurt so bad for the families who were suffering and for those who lost loved ones. A few months later I wrote a poem called Remember Only Today It was placed in a collection called America- Voices Coming Together published by Iliad Press and as I understand, it was given to the NYC Police,Firefighters, and libraries. When the WTC attack anniversary came, I was in church. When they sang "God Bless the USA" I stood up and sang along with the one singing. Everyone else remained seated until my friend Dana came and stood beside me and we sang with tears streaming down our faces. Then the preacher realized what was happening and had the whole congregation stand and sing. I had never felt to be the only Patriotic American before that day but there was one other Patriot there and her name was Dana. It was my roomates mother, asking if her daughter was there. I told her that she was not here, but her mom told me that when she got in to, turn on the TV because the world trade center had been bombed. Of course I had a started reaction to that. I immediately turned on my TV. The first tower had already fallen. I was shocked to learn a plane had crashed into the building. I watched TV in my room by myself. Then I saw the second building collaspe. I never saw something so real, but at the same time, not real. I called my dad and we talked for a little while. Since I am fairly close to home from campus, I went home that day. I missed class that day, and just watched TV, glued to the news to see what was happening. Tell us your story: I was halfway between Bangor and Portland Maine to attend a 10 am meeting when I got tired of the tape I was listening to and turned on the radio. Of course I was plunged right into the horrible news, and immediately was in shock; I could barely see to drive safely and wondered what the other travellers knew. As the horror continued to unfold, I thought for sure the end of the world had come, that radicals and militants all over the world and within this country would seize the opportunity and we would be plunged into a world war. When I reached Portland I was so upset and confused I took a wrong turn and somehow ended up inside a square that was cordoned off by police and firetrucks. I don't even know how I squeezed in! I was quickly escorted out. At the meeting, one woman confided that she thought that maybe it was about time "Arrogant America" got dropped down a peg. I was absolutely horrified! I've thought about that comment a lot and wonder if perhaps I misunderstood, or, if perhaps there was a grain of truth to it. Had we become complacent? And I don't just mean against terrorists. On my way back to Bangor, I learned that the commotion in Portland was just kids setting off firecrackers in an alley. It says a lot for the (lack of) common-sense of the children and quick response of Portland, so I was both frightened and comforted. Once home, I called around to area hospitals, nursing homes and schools to see if they needed any volunteers to comfort what I assumed would be grief-stricken people and children, or just help out somehow. Boy was I wrong! Most people who answered the phone sounded almost annoyed at me for calling. I felt so lonely and helpless. I can't donate blood (not that they needed any), so I did donate money, which I HOPE was put to good use, despite the ugly rumors about people's donations being misappropriated. Weeks later I would learn from friends that they had family members or friends lost in the Twin Towers. They seemed to be taking it even better than I was. One friend had pictures taken from his apartment that clearly showed a man falling down from high up one of the towers. I went out for a boat ride in Casco Bay a few days later, and a cruise ship had been diverted there from NY. The harbor patrol and Coast Guard was keeping everyone away from it, which I guess was a good thing. But I was honestly afraid to look at it for fear that as soon as I did it would suddenly explode in my face. In the first few weeks I heard so much about how the nation would pull together and people were treating each other differently and how proud everyone was to be American. I was very optomistic, because I am constantly reflecting on these issues. I even bought a flag to put on my car and a Proud to be American t-shirt. But it has been a year, and in my personal experience, no one has changed. We are just the same. Except for increases in security against attack, a lot of flags flying and patriotic music and mourning for the lost as well as the survivors (and I did much of this mourning myself, still do everyday), no one in my acquaintance deeply delved into what it means to be American, what it means to be human, what tolerance means, or how to truly better ourselves, America, or the World. Are people still donating blood? Giving money? Would they help their neighbor if it weren't for such an immensely dramatic catastrophe? It is like the puppy that gets adopted because it makes the newspapers: what about all the other orphans that remain locked up because they don't make the news or the headlines? I am still very scared and very sad. But it is not too late. Hopefully at least some of the flag-waving and grandstanding will trickle down into people's souls and we can truly become a more humane race. I'm just not sure that 9/11 was the catalyst for it. Tell us your story: i was sleeping..the phone rang.it was my daughter calling me from work..she asked me if i had the television on.i said no..she said mom you need to turn it on.airplanes have hit buildings in new york...its all over the television..we hung up..i turned my tv on,and i could not beleive what i saw..i still can'not beleive what happened on that day..i was in awe..tears filled my eyes..i thought of my daughter,and my 8 month old grandson..thinking if anything happened to them how it would hurt..thinking of all the families that would hurt..i prayed that day..that God would be with the loved ones left behind..prayed for the people who lost their lives in those buildings.i lost my husband in an explosion in 1973..so i know what they were going threw,the families,the mothers,the fathers,brothers,sisters,daughters,wives,husbands,and sons...tragedy effects us all our lives...we never forget it..i raised a 9 month old daughter on my own because of tradgedy..it was'nt easy,but God helped me threw it..prayer is the answear to all our problems..prayer will get us threw it...i continue to drive with my lights on,and when i see a flag i remember 9-11-01 diana cole Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My boyfriend, Steve, got laid off the day before. We always go to work together. However that day, September 11th, he walked me to the bus stop and waited till the bus came. I got on and said good bye. Who knew what was to come next. I was on my way to work on the corner of North Moore and Greenwich Street. I got out of the A train at Canal Street. Looked at my watch as I was crossing the street right before my job at 250 West Street. It was 8:45 a.m. That was late for me. That is when I heard it. The sound of a plane. Living two blocks from J.F.K. airport for a year, it did not strike me odd hearing a plane in the city. I looked up and that's when I saw it. A plane flew over my head. I looked down, not thinking anything of it, and said to myself in a joking manner... "The plane better watch out, it's going to hit the twin towers." After it hit, there was silence. Not that much noise. It was like I heard the crash but not really. I started screaming "No!! It did not it the plane did not hit. I know that plane did not hit." But it did. I saw the hole on the side of the building and lost it. I went crazy. I lost my train of thought. I did not know where to go or what to do. I started to circle around thinking what I should do. Should I go to work? Should I go back on the train and go home. Then I thought "Okay I'll get my sister and then we'll go home." So I crossed the street and ran to 388 Greenwich. Took the elevator. There where two women with their breakfast. They could not have known what had happened. I started to say out "I can't believe the plane just crashed. I can't believe it." They consoled me, told me to calm down and that it would be okay. I thought the plane crash was an accident. When I got to the 18th floor I could not find my sister. I sat next to the window facing the opposite way of the towers. After about 5 minutes, I saw my sister and told her a plane crashed and we need to go home. All of a sudden a guy came and told everyone on the floor "Everyone get out. Go down the stairs. There's another plane. It just hit the other tower." I went crazy. That's when I knew we were under attack. My sister and I grabbed our bags and started down the stairs. I could not walk, my knees where shaking. My friend Azad helped me know down the 18 flights of stairs. My sister could not wait for me she left. Till this day I say to her "I can't believe it. I risked my life going into a building after seeing a plane crash into one to get you out safe and you leave me." Once I stepped outside, I saw the second hole the second plane hit. I sat on the west side highway watching all the fire engines pass by. I saw the people falling. I saw the towers fall. My sister and I started walking uptown along the highway. I was nervous hearing the military plane fly over. I though we were under attach. I kept on saying "this is like Red Dawn". I saw that movie the day before. My sister and here co-workers stopped down the street at a gas station to get something to drink. I did not want to be there in fear that something or someone was going to blow it up. I wanted to get home to my mother as soon as possible. At the gas station, I saw what looked like a movie. A guy has his car door open, radio on high, and everyone was sounding it hearing the new about the crash. A women, did not speak very good English, with here kid was crying, came up to me and asked what happened to the buildings. What HAPPENED!! I told her it fell. And we both started to cry. Everyone had problems with the phone that day. Thank goodness my sister was able to get to my mother a few times. She was crying hysterically. We told her to calm down, that we'll be there soon. She though we were caught under the rubble. I did not know what she was talking about. It was not till I saw the dust cloud on t.v. how bad it was. I did not want to go near the bridge in fear that another plane might come and attack it, so my sister and I took the F train back to Coney Island, Brooklyn. When the train got out of the tunnel in Brooklyn that is when my sister and I saw the new view of Manhattan for the first time. It was awful. Steve picked my sister and I from the train station at Avenue X. We finally got home mid afternoon. Gave my mom a huge hug and was grateful to God that we were all home safe. I was also crateful that I was with my sister. She was the strong one thought it all. I don't think I would have been able to get my head straight after what I say. Funny, she is the youngest. You would think I would be the strong one at a time of crises. Later that night she did break down and cry. That day is one I will never forget. It's ironic... that Friday night Steve and I saw Jay and Silent Bob right across the Twin Towers. I looked up and said, "Look how beautiful the building looks tonight. It's a beautiful night."
