Tell us your story: all of the inspectors had been greeting the public that day, making sure they were helped to cast their votes..when a few of us heard ..well it sounded like a car crash, but from a distance!..we didnt pay too much mind to it at first. a man with a transistor radio came in to vote and told me that a plane had hit the world trade center..at first i just looked at him like you gotta be kidding!..i then went out side and people were kinda schuffling out side and talking about the plane..I walked to my friends house and there was only one station on television.I couldnt believe what i saw..and only moments later as we watched the second tower get hit. my friend and i were screaming ..i couldnt believe it "all the people, in there" I wasnt totally out of it untill i heard that the pentagon was hit as well..that's when I was truely afraid..I thought we were all dead! I thought where is our government?..I then went as fast as i could go to the bus stop, to get my son outta school..he goes to school located down town brooklyn, not far from the bridge..I couldnt believe the smoke it reminded me of a london fog horror movie ..the smoke and debree were intense.I got my child and we hitched hiked back home I only had 5 dollars on me and all the atm's were down..a perfect stranger handed me another 5 dollars to help me and my son get home..the only car service in the area was loaded with people waiting their turn to get a ride to their homes..i had asked a man in a red car to please take my son and I home and i payed him the 10 dollars. later on..and after trying to call into manhattan,because my daughter attends high school there.mayor rudy..opened up train service ..I then went and got into manhattan...going over the bridge it was hard to see anything,and not because of the smoke but my tears wouldnt stop..I keep thinking about "all those people" i got to my daugters school to find out that had released her..even though i called and told them to keep her there .and i was coming for her..she had signed a log to where she was going..and she was alright..on the way home and finally getting into a bklyn bound train I was in the subway when building 7 fell..we had to be rerouted back uptown..well it took 5 hours to get back home ...I'm grateful that I was able to get back home...so many werent so fortuate! My friends brother Ruben Esquilar who worked for futuristic trust which i believe was on the 96th floor didnt make it home!.The next two days my daugter and I volunteered in the armory. on lex. ave.I couldnt go back another day the mass amount of families and friends of the missing were phenomonal. but I remember 1 elderly woman who just gave out white roses! I left the office at 5 PM and went down to see my two daughters at their home. We had an old apointment for having dinner. The dinner was spoiled by the news as we watched CNN instead of talking like an ordinary family. Tell us your story: a friend called me at home and said to turn on the tv. as I watched in horror at the spectacle unfolding before my eyes, disbelief washed over me. I watched throughout the night, into the next day. Then, I realized "stop". I turned my attention towards the thousands of people pouring into ny city to help. the red cross was overwhelmed with donations. exhausted firefighters, policemen/women, emergency workers, the average american, search and rescue dogs, all struggling to help. I focused on the good. The many efforts to help, console, dig, whatever they could do. I was always proud to be American, but now even more so. I always sing the Star Spangleled Banner with pride for my neighbors at the Moose Lodge and Elks Club. Now, when I sing it, it is more poignant. For, even though I always felt every word of the song in my heart, for many, it had become almost rote. That has changed, and now, when I sing the Star Spangeled Banner, people cry, not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy at the realization of who we are and what we have. I didn't lose a blood family member, friend, coworker, anyone I knew personally. But, I did lose sister and brother Americans. I always felt we are one people, the human race. And if there is a reason this had to happen, I think to myself of the resolve that came out of this, people coming together with one voice, one nation, one heart. War on any continent is unspeakable. I'm British by birth, but I moved to Washington, DC when I was about 18 and settled there for the next 17 years. I married an American and had two lovely daughters. Then the opportunity to work in the UK came up, and we took it. Watched capable moving men carefully wrap my furniture and pack it into a container, found a house in a pretty English village, piled onto a plane and began our new lives here. That was in October 2000. Almost a year later, I was having lunch with two work colleagues. It was a glorious day . . . bright sunshine, clear blue skies. We had a lovely meal at a nearby seafood restaurant . . . clam chowder, mussels and a bottle or two of Sancerre (amazing the things you remember). On the drive back, my cell phone rang . . . it was a former colleague and friend in the States . . . she had a series of strange coincidences to tell me about a mutual friend of ours, and while we we were chatting she said . . . "oh, and by the way a plane flew into the World Trade Center this morning." Just like that. No horror. No fear. Just . . . wow! We assumed (like almost everyone who wasn't there and didn't actually see it) that it was a light aircraft. We laughed about our mutual friend . . . ended the conversation with a promise to talk some time the following week and hung up. Ten minutes later she called me back . . . this time her voice was strained . . . and we were both frightened . . . another plane had hit the second tower . . . it was as though the world slipped suddenly sideways . . . as if the ground had just shifted under all our feet. We had just pulled into the parking lot . . . I practically sprinted into the building and up to our office so that I could log onto CNN and see what was going on. We have family and friends in both New York and Washington . . . I had to make sure my "familiars" were alright. My laptop desktop was bristling with IM chatter . . . friends on both sides of the Atlantic were frantically trying to get my attention to tell me what was going on. My brother (in Charlottesville) was clearly frightened . . . a plane was circling the White House, a plane had crashed on the Mall, a plane had crashed into the Pentagon . . . I tried to reach our families . . . I got through briefly to my mother-in-law, but we were cut off and after that all the circuits were busy. I called my husband and told him to turn the television at home to CNN. The news kept coming . . . Tower 2 had collapsed. People were jumping. I still hadn't seen a single image, but I felt overwhelmingly frightened . . . attacked, under siege. Then my boss said something chilling . . . "they hijacked airliners . . . with people on them." The rest of the day is a blur. I sat there at my desk unable to function. At about four o'clock I went home . . . I cried all the way home, cried and sang America the Beautiful. George, my husband, and I watched the BBC and CNN coverage until late into the night . . . sobbing, frightened. For weeks/months we cried. I think I cried every day for four months straight. Silly things set me off. We bought a flag. I went to the American embassy in London to sign the condolence book and wept in the arms of a U.S. Navy Captain. An Afghani man came up to me, weeping too, and apologized over and over again. The sea of flowers around the memorial to Roosevelt . . . the flag . . . the Marine honour guard . . . the lone piper who showed up and played Amazing Grace and then left. And then I came home . . . briefly . . . in December to bring my stepson back to the UK to spend Christmas with us. I was sideswiped by the deluge of emotion I felt as the plane touched down at Dulles . . . and when I walked into the Immigration hall and saw the enormous flag and the words "Welcome to the United States of America" I broke down again. I stood there for a long while with my hand on my heart just looking at that flag. September 11th for me, though, was the day I realized how much I do love the States . . . until that day I'd have told you I didn't HAVE a home. I'd lived somewhere in the middle of the Atlantic for so long . . . not coming from or belonging to either place . . . the UK or the States. What a fool I was and what a pity that it took something so wicked to show me otherwise . . . I have two homes. How lucky I am . . . and how lucky we all were, our families and friends, to emerge intact . . . at least physically. My father worked at the Trade Center on the 62nd floor and he survived. Our car was stolen the night before and the morning of the attacks the cops took so long to come to my home to take the report on the car being stolen that my father was late to go into work. I drove him to the train station that morning and at exactly 8:46 AM my dad was about to get out of the car when on the radio they said a plane had hit the Trade Center. Within ten minutes of dropping my dad at the station(he thought it wasnt anything serious and still wanted to get to work)i relized hearing all the stories on the radio I saved my dads life by not putting the car alarm on the night before. Driving home minutes after the first plane hit the building I saw people crying on their cell phones car's stopped in the middle of the street, and people getting out screaming I relized I would never forgot exactly everything I heard and saw that day. Still a year later I can remember everything and it's so sad to me. For everyone who died and their family and friends they will always be in prayers. I didnt worry too much about anything really. The Air Force was just a job for me. I got up in the morning and I put my uniform on and went to work. Then I came home took the uniform off and did it all over the next day. To really understand what went thru my mind on September 11, 2001 I have to go back to September 7, 2001. That Friday was a mandatory fun day for my squadron. We were at Freedom Park on base. I remember that it was a beautiful day. I did something stupid. I decided to play flag football. Well I ended up dislocating my shoulder. Really messed it up too; took a surgery and a total ten months of rehab to get it back to normal. Well any way I was taken to the hospital and got help. Because of the medication I wasnt allowed to work. At the time I joked that it was hard way to get an extra long weekend. Well I pretty much had all of Monday off because of the meds. I decided that I would go back to work on Tuesday the 11th. So I made an appointment to turn in my medication and go back to work. Well the apt wasnt until 8 am so I could sleep in a little. I got up as usual and put my uniform on as usual. Just took a little longer than normal is all. I got in my truck and headed to the Hospital. The Federal Hospital at Nellis is across the street from the main base. Well I wasnt on the road for more than a few minutes when the song that was being played was stopped in the middle and the DJ said some had happened in New York at the World Trade Center. I changed the radio to the all news am station. It was like bad dream. I couldnt believe what was going on. It didnt seem possible. When they said the first tower had collapsed I was in total shock. By the time I got to the hospital things were already starting to get ugly. The second tower had fallen and I also heard about the Pentagon. The local Force Protection Level had been elevated to Bravo. When I got my medication turned in finally I headed for the door to go back to work and do something. I didnt know what I could do with my arm still in a sling, but I was going to get to work. I just made it out the door when the Force Protection Level was elevated to Delta (the highest level). I just made it out before the entire building was locked down. I wasnt about to stay at the hospital any longer than I needed to. When I got on the road and got in the turning lane to enter the base I discovered that traffic was at a total stand still. I realized that the base was locked down as well. No one enters or leaves. I saw over the fence that the base Security Forces were geared up and armed up as much as they could. SO I pulled out my cell phone and called work and asked what I should do. They told me they didnt know. So I said This is what I am going to do. I am going to go home and wait by my phone. If you need me to come in on a night shift call me there, at least that way you will know where I am. I sure as hell wasnt doing any good sitting in a traffic jam. So I pulled out into traffic and counted myself lucky that I did it while I still could. On the way Home I called my Parents and told them I was ok and that nothing bad had happened in Las Vegas. I told them that I loved them and I would call them latter. So I went home and waited by the phone, and I watched it all happen on TV, Me sitting there in my uniform and my arm in a sling. I felt so useless that day. It made me sick to my stomach. I didnt sleep that night at all. I kept thinking my country needs me and I am useless to my country. I had 4 days to finish my master's degree thesis and was holed up in a box-room, cut off from the outside world with the intention of finishing my work on time.The phone rang. My friend & housemate Iain had called from work to tell me a plane had hit the World Trade Centre. Ive been there. I was lucky enough to visit New York City as an 18 year old. I stood at the bottom of the World Trade Centre and looked up in awe.I'll never, ever forget the sight. You can't explain to someone who hasn't seen it, just how those great buildings soared into the sky. endless and truly, truly breathtaking. I had tv pirctures on in the box room, along with radio comment.We've an excellent talk radio station here called "radio 5 live". A DJ called Simon Mayo was on air at the time.Whenever I see Images of that day on TV now, I can still hear his voice. I didn't do any more work that day. Not a thing. I tried, but I couldn't stop listening, or watching. I heard testimony from an "expert" on the radio that the buildings couldn't collapse, they were protected against such attacks. But collapse they did. I love New York. It changed my life, having visited the city as an impressionable 18 year-old, I feel cheated now seeing the skyline on tv without the towers. But I'll come back, as soon as my financial situation allows. I'm hoping to become a police officer here in Britain. It's my life's ambition. When I imagine myself doing the job, I sometimes think about how I would have reacted in such a situation. The truth is that I dont think I would have coped at all. The officers of the NYPD demonstrated courage that should make the people of America proud, and should be used as a benchmark for all police officers all over the world to demonstrate bravery in the face of adversty. I wish your country well & I wish your people well, but I wont preach any further because the terms "your country" and "your people" dont do justice. we're with you. We love your attitude & resiliance, and we will live to tell our grandchildren about the events of september 11. But by that time, it will be a victorious tale. At first my thought was "dude shut that thing off before I break it." Then I realized what was being said I aksed if it was for real. I found out it was. I was a homeless man at that time, and so i went to Pioneer Square in Portland. people were gathering. So many Hippies and Peceniks were there and I began to get sick of hearing this. I gathered with some REAL Americans and we silenced the Hippies for a little bit and let be known that as Americans we will kick ass, are obligated to kick ass, if anyone ever screws with us. Tell us your story: My 11 month old daughter Elizabeth and I had just finished breakfast that morning and were sitting in our TV room watching Good Morning America, as we did every morning. At about 8:45am I had left the room to use the bathroom. When I came back into the room I was surprised to see Good Morning America was still on. I saw that one of the trade center buildings was on fire. I sat on the floor with Elizabeth and we watched as the tragedy unfolded. I could not believe that while we were watching the first tower burning and everyone on TV was trying to figure out what had happened we witnessed the second plane crash into the other tower. At that moment I hugged my daughter and thought our world has changed forever and Elizabeth will never know what it was like before 9/11/01. I also thanked God that Elizabeth was too little to understand what had happened. We sat on the floor for a long while watching TV that morning and as Elizabeth's nap time drew near I had a very hard time letting her go. Even though we had no loved ones lost in ths tragedy, I felt as if I never wanted to let my daughter go again. I finally got the courage to take her upstairs & put her down for her nap. I don't remember weather I called my husband, who is a career Fireman in Haddon Heights NJ, or he called me. We both couldn't believe what we were watching. I think I stayed glued to the TV all day talking to realitives and friends on the phone and expressing our disbelief of what we were watching.This was a day that I will probably never forget. To my utter amazement, I am prouder since 9/11 - I did not think that was possible. Having been born & bred in PR, with a local Mom & American (Montana) Dad, I was horrified and very ashamed in 1990 (Operation Desert Shield/ Operation Desert Storm) when so many PR locals claimed, after years of being reservists - that they were conscientious objectors & therefore could not be sent to war. I was happy to *not* hear or read of this after 9/11. I am no longer in Puerto Rico - although my H is still stationed there. In my apartment complex, we have been asked to keep our balcony lights on from 9/10 to 9/11; as a tribute and "as our way of putting a candle in the window for the innocence we lost 1 year ago". Most of us have complied. My husband was activated Oct. 1, 2001. I was heartsick for about 10 days until I was sure he was not being sent to the Middle East. Many of my H's co-reservists were sent to Diego Garcia, but being Seabees have not seen direct action (I think). I got to witness some of the training for those that were to remain local and were assigned to security - I can only say: I have seen grown men cry. I salute the people assigned to Security at NS Roosevelt Roads; and if every Navy Security Person goes through the same training, I salute all Navy Security Personnel. Being activated has been great for us as a family, and has freed us in many ways. Tell us your story: I had taken flt 77 months before. we went on that direct flight many times, a good friend of mine regularly traveled with me to california. It was his regular trip to el segundo on business. Stan Hall, one of my mentors at Raytheon, was taking that regular flight that day as he would do sometimes twice a week ( being older and not tied down as much he took the trip many times back and forth for others). I had just called him the friday before and left a voice mail saying we should get together because he was going to pass to me his teaching slides for a particular course that he taught. he said he had done enough of it and wanted to to pass it on to me as the next generation supporting our nations troops teaching electronic warfare to the enlisted guys.. he was nearing retiriement and could have retired at any time but was pressing to get just one more design in for raytheon. so he was on one more trip while I waited to hear from him(I never knew if he got the message, and the knowledge he was just about to pass on to me is gone for ever ).... ironically he crashed into the pentagon in the section he had visited on business many times before. I guess it is fitting that he perished at the place he loved to be at. That day I called his phone again and left another message not making the connection to the flight untill that evening ( Ias many thought , geeze that could easily have been me!). Weeks later the entire defense industry and employees at all the companies he worked at came out to honor him for his service and friendship. We found out moments later that a plane had crashed into one the towers at the World Trade Center. I immediately became paniced because my younger sister was working on the 101st floor of One World Trade Center. I ran back to my office and started calling anyone I knew who could give information about Lorraine. I really started to panic when I was unable to reach family or friends on Staten Island, in New York City. I called my roommate and asked him to pick me up at work, as I was in no condition to drive my car. We rushed to Colonia, NJ where my eldest brother lives. It was then I found out my sister was missing and my mother had suffered a heart attack upon hearing the horrific news. We gathered our family together to begin the horrible and torturous wait for news of our "little" sister. Many weeks went by and eventually we had to face the awful truth that Lorraine wasn't coming home. It has been a year since that horrible day, yet time has been powerless to ease the pain of our loss. Lorraine's husband seems lost without her and the lives of my bothers and sisters can never be the same. My mother's pain is of course the worst of all. The happiness has gone out of her eyes and I don't think we'll ever see it again. In Lorraine's honor I ask that future generations remember the horrific events of Sept 11 2001 and make sure this type of horror never happens again. My first class was Business Law and the whole time all we did was watch the television. We thought "Oh, know - that plane accidentally ran into the WTC tower!". Then the second plane hit and our teacher told us this was definitely no accident. I didn't understand. Why would someone do that on purpose? Then the Pentagon came and all we could think about was "What's next?". Then, of course, we had to change classes. On the way I heard someone in the halls talking about another plane. Then listened to people talk about it from the ground point of view. It was too much for me to handle. The first time I heard of Bin Laden I hated him. For what he had done to so many families and our country. Now all I can do is feel sorry for him. I would hate to be such an evil person. The night before this horrific day arrived, my mom and I were home discussing the Taliban and what they were doing in Afghanistan. This whole event was ironic because the week before this happened we started learning about the Taliban, terrorism, and Afghanistan in my Global Studies Class. I went to bed that Monday thinking that I would have another long and boring day ahead of me. I woke up at six o'clock in the morning, climbed out of bed and began my daily morning routine. I took a shower, got dressed, brushed my hair, ate breakfast while watching the news, put all my work in my backpack, and then I brushed my teeth. I left my house at 7:10 a.m. for school. I arrived at school and started my day in my least favorite class; Earth Science. The morning was going slow in Earth Science so I decided to take a nap. Before I knew it, it was already time to go. Studio Art was my next class that went to. My friend John and I went to our lockers to get some homework that we hadn't finished yet. We got up to go ask the teacher, Mr. Olsen, if we could go to our lockers. He said, "Why don't you guys work on your art project?" Our response was, "we'll get it done." John and I went to our lockers. When we got back someone said something about the World Trade Center being hit by something. We just ignored it and finished our math homework. The bell rang at 9:24 so we left Art and continued our day. My next class was gym, my favorite because we play sports. I went to my locker before gym to drop off my books. As I was walking down the hall towards gym my ears zoned in on more news about the World Trade Center. After hearing this, I started becoming more curious about what everybody was talking about. I continued towards gym. I walked in the side door and everybody in my gym class was standing in front of the television just staring at the screen. When I looked up I noticed that the CNN network was on. I walked up to my teacher Mr. Bruning and asked, "What's going on Mr. B." He said, "We are being attacked by terrorists. The World Trade Center has been struck by an airplane." I just stood there. I couldn't move. I never thought that something this horrific would occur during my lifetime. Boy, was I wrong. My friend Noah was coming out of the locker room and he said, "what's up? What's everyone looking at?" I said, "The World Trade Center have been attacked by terrorists." Then Noah said, "It was probably those damn Arabs." I looked at him and said, "Why did you say that?" He said, "Because they are stupid." The next thing I heard was that officials believe that the Taliban and Osama bin Laden were responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center. As I was watching the television, CNN replayed the first plane, American Flight 11 from Boston, hitting the North Tower of the World Trade Center. As I was reading the notes at the bottom of the screen I saw the second plane, United Flight 175 from Boston, crashing into the South Tower. I couldn't believe that I witnessed this! LIVE! I never thought that I would see someone fly a plane straight into a building It's about 9:45 a.m. when all of sudden someone in my class shouted, "LOOK! " I looked up and saw that the Pentagon, our nation's defense headquarters was struck by another plane. My teacher Mr. Bruning looked at the class and said, "We are going to war." We all looked back and said, "why?" He told us it's because terrorists attacked our military headquarters. At the end of my gym class I was talking to one of my friends about the attacks when suddenly CNN went back to New York City as the South Tower of the World Trade Center collapsed. At the same time the South Tower was collapsing I looked at the bottom of the screen and it said that the White House was being evacuated. I only then realized how serious the attacks were. At 10:28 a.m. I was in English, I looked up at the screen and saw that the North Tower at the World Trade Center collapsed. My friend Amanda said, "Holy Cow! I can't believe what is happening!" I never saw the plane crashing in Somerset, Pennsylvania but I did read the notes at the bottom because it said that a plane did crash in Pennsylvania. Later that day the CNN news reporters said that people were calling their families and telling them that they were going to try and take the plane back from the hijackers. That is what they figured happened in Pennsylvania. When I got home, I was still in awe. I asked my Dad, "did you know what happened in Manhattan?" He said, "no! Why? What happened?" I told him that terrorists have attacked the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. He couldn't believe what I was saying. A couple of hours later my mom came home. I asked her how her day was. She said only that she was watching the world blow up around her. Later that same night my family and I were watching television when President Bush's speech came on. He vowed to go after the terrorists. September 11th has affected many people. For instance the families who lost loved ones in the World Trade Center, Pentagon, and hijacked airplanes. I also felt bad families of lost firefighters and police officers who put their lives on the line to save other people. All I know is that I will never forget the day that the United States got attacked by Terrorists. Now I know how my grandparents felt when the United States went to World War I and World War II I know now that now I'm truly PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN. The radio station I listen to ususally has a lot of joking around in the morning, so when they interrupted the program to tell of the World Trade Center being hit by a plane, I thought it was a joke. Since I worked as a Central Supply Clerk, ordering and distributing medical supplies to the two nurses' stations, I went to one of them to drop some supplies off and to go to the front office to get a signature from my boss. As I was walking down the hall, to the nurses' station, I happened to look into a resident's room just as the television showed the second plane hitting the first tower of the Trade Center. I stopped in my tracks and looked on in horror as I saw the plane explode and flames and smoke pouring out from the tower. I watched as people were breaking windows, holding up what looked like sheets, and waving to get attention to themselves for the dilema they were in. I just stood there, stunned, knowing there was nothing I could do to help any of the people there. I watched as people starting jumping from buildings and felt the energy drain from me, like a balloon that was losing its air. I brought the medical supplies to the nurses' station and went back to my supply room, sat down, in a numb and shocked daze. I just could not believe it. Needless to say, I did not get any more work done. When it was finally time to go home, I turned on the car radio, and learned of the pentagon being hit by a plane, and of the plane that had crashed in Pennsylvania. As I was driving home, I noticed something different about the other drivers. They were very nice to each other, no one cutting anyone off, no one trying to get to the red light first, just to sit there, and no horns blowing. It was almost surreal, as if I was the only one on the planet. AS I was sitting at a stop light near my house, I heard a fighter jet fly overhead, and then things started to hit me. We were being attacked. When I got home, I turned on the TV and sat in front of it, trying to comprhend what I was seeing, but it just did not registar. It seemed too much like a movie. When I saw pictures of the WTC falling, my heart seemed to stop, thinking of all the people in those buildings, and knowing, there was nothing I could do to help. I felt helpless, shocked and angry. Why, I thought, would someone want to attack the US? After all, hadn't we helped the entire world? Were we capable of helping the rest of the world and not ourselves? Okay, I reasoned, so the US has a few faults, like butting our noses into things I don't think we should, yet at the same time, I would not choose to live anywhere else. I was born and raised in this country and I love it, and have given to charities that help other countries, so why would they attack us? I guess, in this moment, I decided never to give again to any charity that helps other countries. As I was sitting there, watching the story of the Pentagon, I realized that these people were being murdered in front of my eyes. My sister, having been murdered in 1978, by her fiance, was also a victim of murder, and knew what the families of these people were going through, and were about to. There was no agencies to call, and the need to want to help with at least listening to the victims' families was growing. I hardly slept that night, having a news radio program on all night. It was also eerie that night to. Since I live near O Hare Airport, I was used to hearing planes at all hours of the day and night. This night, it was an eerie, almost haunting silence. No planes. The only thing I heard was the crickets chirping, almost as if they were singing some happy tune, not knowing what took place. I heard President Bush tell the American people to continue to go on as usual, but how could we? What could we do to help? I pondered these things as I was driving to work, stopping at a White Hen to get a newspaper, still reeling from the events that took place the day before. People seemed to be more friendly, not so much saying things, but quiet and more solem. Again, the driving was more calm, almost like a quiet, panic calm. I had heard the President say the best way to show the terrorists that they had not won, was to go to work, so I did. I hardly got anything done, one from being tired and the other from shock of what I had seen and heard on the news. After a year later, listening to the memorials, I still cried, as I did when I first heard about this horror. I gave to the police and firefighters asking for donations, and now have a more reverent respect for these brave people, as well as the men and women in the military. I know I cannot blame the whole country of Afghanistan, as I am sure that not all the people there were involved, and when I see the reports of people celebrating the horror that was left in its wake from the terroists, I cringe, thinking that if this happened to them, would we also celebrate? I believe that God made us all, men and women, to live in harmony, and to rely on Him to guide us. Yet, day in and day out, I see and hear stories of people killing each other because they are different in beliefs and culture. When will it end? Are we going to kill each other off completly before it ends? It is still hard to watch any of these pictures. Recently, the Chicago Tribune gave out CD ROM's in the paper. In this CD, it contained all the information the Tribune had about September 11, 2001. I think the hardest thing for me, was to see the number of fire men and police men lost, as well as the number of victims, and also, the most heart wrenching thing, was the victims' families, falling apart when they heard the news. My heart just bled for them. In this day and age, I thought we had come further than that. I just think there is a better way to settle our differences, yet at the same time, am glad there are differences in this world, only because I think each one of us is unique. I was thinking that someone was joking with me. Then I found out it was true. Then I found out that that flight 77 hit the Pentagon. I was worried due to the fact that I thought my brother worked in the Pentagon. Then I found out that he was safe and worked across from the Pentagon. Tell us your story: It was the start to a Tuesday much like other Tuesdays before - except I was going to visit New York City for a conference that day. My wife Joy was packed and ready at home, waiting with her mother on my return from a weekly business referral meeting. My meeting started at 8 AM, and usually lasted until about 9 AM. We had decided to drive to New York, rather than fly, since it was less expensive for the three of us... When I left my meeting I hardly noticed the big screen TV in the lobby of the car dealership where we met, since I was in a hurry to get home and get started toward NYC. This was 8:50 AM. Then, on my way home, I listened in disbelief to the radio and heard a plane had hit the North Tower of the WTC. It was 8:59 AM when I arrived at home, took my wife into my arms as we both watched in disbelief the second tower being hit by another airplane. I immidiately thought "we are so lucky that this conference was scheduled on the 12th, or we could already be there, and might have gone up on the WTC observation desk on a beautiful day like this". I tried to call the conference provider to find out if they still planned on having the conference, and they initially said they would. Realizing they probably had no idea of the magnitude of the events unfolding, I decided to call work and find out what they would like for me to do. Ultimately, I stayed home watching TV in disbelief and finding out later the conference was cancelled, since no one could get in or out of lower Manhatten anyway (the conference would have been on 42nd St.). Some days later I found out from our cousin that her brother was the fire captain John Jonas of the few people who survived on the stairs by helping a woman down who slowed them enough to be in the only spot to survive that day inside the North Tower after it collapsed. I still have chills running up my spine when I think about all the people who had no idea what was happening, and who died needlessly. The images of that day are still burning in my head, and I wish we will never have to go through anything like this again. Let's not go to war with anyone, and try to preserve peace!
