Terrorists attacked the World Trade Center in New York, killing thousands of innocent people. On that day, I was in school as usual. I recall being in math class and was having a trial bus safety evacuation. We were all in the buses, and our driver was trying to make us quiet down in order to discuss safety issues with us. He then proceeded to tell us that two planes had hit a building in New York. We were all a little confused and curious to find out more details. We returned to class, and a few moments later, the principal came for a brief meeting with our team teachers in the hallway. He informed them about the horrible incident that had just taken place in New York. When our teacher returned to the classroom, she was very upset. We could all tell something was seriously wrong. We briefly discussed what had happened with her. She couldn't really tell us a lot because she didn't really know that much either. Also, the principal thought it was best if the students discussed the situation with their parents, rather than in school with their teachers and peers. My mother picked me up that day after school. I asked her what had happened and she explained to me that two planes had hit the World Trade Center in New York and another plane hit a section of the Pentagon in Washington D.C. When my father came home from work, I also discussed what had happened with him too. That night, I watched the news to get as much information as possible. They kept showing the planes flying through the Twin Towers over and over again. I was very sad and shocked at these awful incidents. The thought of so many innocent people dying and trapped inside those buildings upset me the most. The next day in school was extremely different from the others. Everyone was affected by the previous days events in some way. This was the topic of almost all of our conversations in class. We still couldn't believe this actually happened. It wasn't just a dream, it was reality. The fact that both planes left from Logan Airport in Boston, where I currently live, frightened me because I have flown out of that same airport several times. I always thought it was extremely difficult to get weapons on a plane. I always thought that flying was safe. Soon after, it was discovered that some of the terrorists aboard the two planes were criminals wanted by the FBI; I couldn't believe it! How did they get through security if they were on the list of people wanted by the FBI? As more and more evidence was revealed, I became more and more amazed by this crime. The number one question that's been in my mind from the day of the attacks is why would someone ever want to do something like this? Why would you perform such a terrorist act and kill many innocent people including, firefighters, police officers, rescue workers, and all of the people inside the building? Not only American citizens were killed during this act of terrorism, but also people from all over the world. After the attacks of September 11th, I have learned to be more thankful for my family and friends. People who lost their lives - firefighters, people in the planes that crashed, along with the people inside the Twin Towers should be remembered on September 11th. I realized how precious life is and how quickly it can change. Because of the events that occurred on September 11th, we are now a stronger nation. Patriotism is being publicly displayed with American flags waving outside of homes and on cars. People have come closer together and become friendlier as well. As you can see, September 11th, 2001, is a very tragic event in history that will never be forgotten. My husband and I had just sent our kids out the door to school and I stepped in the shower to get ready for work. The phone rang and it was my niece asking if we had heard what had happened in New York. I called up to my husband and told him to turn on the TV, wrapped myself in a towel, then went up to see what was going on. I spent the next three hours wrapped in that towel unable to move away from the television. When the first tower collapsed I remember covering my mouth with my hand and looking at my husband to see if what I thought I just saw really happened. I will never forget the look of horror in my husbands eyes or the tears running down his face. He is a fireman and knew the tragety of what had just occured before I could even comprehend what I had seen. The last thing I remember distinctly from that day was hanging our flag on the front of the house.It stayed there for the next six months. In the days and weeks that followed I felt like I was walking around numb and surrounded by a fog that wouldn't lift. I couldn't stop watching TV hoping that they would find an area where people were just waiting for the rescuers to help them out. My husband knew what was going on at ground zero as it was now called. He heard from some of the fireman on our department that had delivered a new firetruck to help replace what had been lost. They worked at ground zero while they were there and came home devestated by what they saw. On October 25th my husband and I drove to New York to attend some of the funerals of firemen that had died on September 11th. We went to six funerals in two days. Most of the caskets were empty with only a framed picture on top. At some, there was no casket, just a table with mementos and pictures. We met the wives and children, mothers and fathers, friends and relatives and brother firefighters that filled the funeral homes to overflowing. On Staten Island we stopped at a corner bar between funerals and the people in the bar bought us our dinner and took turns sitting with us, they told us their stories and who they knew that had died that day, they all knew someone. Along with the sadness that prevailed for those two days that we were in New York I will never forget the generosity of the people we met. We were thanked over and over again for being there, by the families, by the other firemen, by bus drivers, taxi drivers, policemen and by perfect strangers on the street. Anyone that saw my husband's dress uniform and noticed that he was from out of town took it upon themselves to let us know how much they appreciated our being there. In a way it helped us to feel as though we had done something to honor the men and women that died by being there to show our support to their families and their city. What beautiful strength in the face of tragety the people of New York have. I will never forget them. They helped to heal me and I can only hope that I may have helped them too. When my mom came home after dropping off my sister to school, she told me that planes crashed into the twin towers. So we turned on the news and watched it. I personally have heard thousands of stories from different people, such as a friend was working on the 53rd floor in the elevator shaft of tower two, he was very lucky to get out. My family didn't lose anyone, but being a new yorker and surrounded by the horror of this it hits me so close to home. I am a student at Adelphi University and man that day will never ever be forgotten. September 11, 2001 I wrote this poem on that night. I live off of Hempstead Turnpike in Elmont. All you saw were cars at a dead stop going into the city, and all you heard was sirens from fire trucks coming to help out from as far as the Hamptons. Never in my life will I see this again. So many faces were just covered in dust They all looked the same coming out of the rush. Fires burned smoke didn't clear Nobody knew if the end was near. Police and fire departments rushing to the scene When they arrived they saw destruction you wouldn't believe. Eight a.m. in the morning sun shinning bright Who knew within ten minutes day would turn into night. Darkness fell all over downtown You didn't see any smiles all you saw were frowns. The shrills of screaming everyone felt Screams of distress yelling for help. Trying to breath gasping for fresh air Crawling on the ground to find someone who cared. People walking home over the Queensborough bridge Mothers waiting for daddy to come home and hug his kids. Many returned but to many didn't Many found out that they wouldn't be home for dinner. Cell phones didn't work relatives were distressed Nobody knew how long it would take to clean up this mess. The damage took out buildings on surrounding blocks We lost thousands including firefighters and cops. All that is left are pictures in frames Plaques are engraved with all of their names. The stories you hear to the pics our kids kids will see 9-11 will be etched forever into history. It doesn't seem real but it is reality September 10th was the last day of normality. New life will arise two times as tall That's how you overcome whenever darkness may fall. Tell us your story: After returning from a 8 day vacation on 9/9/02 at Disney World ( I mention this due to the park shut down due to they felt it was a target that day),on 9/11/02, I was sitting at my desk at work when someone ran by going over to a tv in antoher persons office saying there had been a plane crash. When they turned on the TV I heard it went into the World Trade Center, so I jumped up to see. We were all standing there in shock wondering what could have gone wrong with our air traffic system when we saw on TV, LIVE, the second plane hit the other tower! We knew then we were under attack. We wondered how many planes could be in the sky ready to attack...then as we kept watching numb, awe struck, we saw smoke from the Pentagon and then the plane went down in Pa. We all could not move in disbelief. Our company, SCT, (corporate ofc based in Malvern Pa. not far from the downed plane), we are in Columbia SC, shut down operations and allowed us to go home to be with our famlies asap. The rest of the day we were glued to our tv's flipping channels trying to make sense of it all and gather all the information we could. Today on the one year anniversary we gathered at our half staff flag and had a moment of silence followed by a word of prayer, at 846am. I was in English class at the time when the principal came on the intercome, explaining the events that had just happened a few minutes ago. I was shocked. The girl I was talking to just a second ago started to cry because her father was schedualed to be on fight 11 that morning to LA. I tried to comfort her as best I could but there was nothing I could do. She later found out that her father had missed his flight. We were greatly relieved. They cancelled the rest of our classes for the day to watch the news. I started watching a few minutes before the second plane hit. I saw it all live. I felt my eyes starting to swell. I knew my uncle worked there but I had a feeling he was safe. Rumors were flying that it was some sort of terrorist attack and that the Prudential building here in Boston was hit by a plane too and was on fire. I had close friends with parents who worked there and they were very upset. One girl fainted. I didn't know what was happening. I went back to the TVs after that with one of my good friends. We watched the towers collapse live. We were afraid something might happen to the school. We weren't allowed to leave, so all we could do was wait. After school was finally over, I mother picked me up. "You know what happened today?" she asked. "Yes, do you know if Uncle Allen is ok?" "He's fine, but the Coffeys are missing". We had known the Coffeys for a long time. My father went to college with them. I didn't know them real well, but we were friends. I figured that maybe they were in a hospital and were safe, but later on in the week, we found out they didn't make it. That was the first time I saw my father cry. I cried too. At about 5pm that night, on 9-11, I got a call from a Lieutenant from my Civil Air Patrol Squadron. He told me that we were called to spend the night at Logan airport to make sure no planes took off. This whole thing was chaos. Everyone in my squadron was taking shifts for sleeping. I was with my good friend Chris and a couple other guys. The place had news crews and military personal everywhere. I didnt get much sleep that night, maybe only 1 hour. I thought mostly about my missing friends, the people who lost their lives, why this happened and why wasn't I one of the people who died today. They turned all the TVs to President Bush addressing the nation. My eyes started to swell again, but I managed to keep back the tears. I was so confused about this whole thing, I had no idea what had happened. I couldn't believe it. All of a sudden, the radio went silent then they announced that a commercial air plane had flown into the first world trade center. I thought it was a joke. They didn't have any other information...i drove on to work and we flipped on the t.v. to watch the second one hit. It was the most horrible experience of my life. As always i turned on chanell 11 news as i do every morning. i was watching the news and then it got imturupted to tell us about the first plane crash into the first tower. I remeber sitting there thinking "what kind of idiot flys into a building. That is such a big mistake." i that point I still thought it was just a bad mistake. As i was brushing out my hair i saw the second plane come into the picture and slam into the 2nd world trade tower. I instently thought terrorist. I dont know why but I did. I ran to wake up my dad and tell hime "The US is getting attacked by terrorist." I didnt really know what to do so i went to school. My teacher had no idea what had happned and was iritated that the class was so giddy. We told him what happened but he didnt get just how huge it was. After class got in my car where i heard about the pentigon and Flight 93. I worked as a Travel Agent for AAA and as soon as I got there it was a mess. Many people where stuck in places away from loved ones and everyone wanted to go home. We stayed open 24 hours those first few days to try to do all we could. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I coordinate a Meals for Me. program in central Maine. At 8:46 I was headed for my job. The announcer on the radio station I listen to mentioned a plane had hit the World Trade center, but I went to work as usual. Our office is a converted bomb shelter, and was supposed to house the governer and his staff in the event of a bomb attack back in the 1960's. We are isolated when we are in there, and we have no radio or TV. At 10:45PM when the volunteer drivers showed up to deliver our meals to the shut-ins, they related the events to us. It so happens the man who runs the Emergency Management agency (Also located in our building) showed up also to man the radio's. He told us planes were misssing and the whole story unfoled tyo me in a matter of minutes. I knew the elderly folks we were about to see would be understandably upset and confused. I instructed my drivers to tell them it was scarry, but we were safe up here in Maine, and that we would see them the next day, as usual. As I drove my rural delivery route, the absence of air traffic was un-nerving and noticable. I wept and wept for months and months. I cannot imagine how people in close proximity to the City can cope. I feel as if a chunk of my soul has been destroyed. I was in a parenting class, as a senior. When I heard this story I was so upset that I left school. I heard the United States Coast Guard was moving to the Homeland Defense Department. Until then I had no idea what I would do with my life. Due to the attacks on our country I joined the United States Coast Guard, active duty. I graduated basic training on August 09, 2002. I'm now stationed in Houston Texas at the Marine Safety Office. Today is September 14, 2002 and I want to tell all of those who lost family that I'm sorry. I tried to give blood and I was turned away because I was to young. My sister and I tried for weeks and we could not. I'm so sorry to all of those children who lost their parents. I wish I could have helped find everyone and if I were there I would have killed myself to help all of you. I thought maybe a small plane just hit a small building.When I went home for lunch and I turned on the TV, I saw it. The plane hitting the World Trade Center. Then another hit the south tower.Maybe twenty minutes later the north tower collapsed and that's about when I went back to school. Then in Mrs. Cano's math classall we did was talk about this. Then someone told me that the south tower had collapsed. I was in shock knowing that maybe thousands had died. After school I was at home watching it all. They thought the death toll was between 4 to 5 thousand. I didn't believe it. Then, a few days later they found out who was behind this terrorist attack. It was Osama Bin Laden. After I found this out I couldn't sleep. It was the worst thing I've seen in all my life. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was a day off of work for me. At the time of the attacks, I was driving in my car, on my way to the local supermarket. I noticed the cars on the expressway near my house were at a standstill, but I just figured there was a bad accident. Then I put on my radio to a music station (which almost never has any news on it). I heard someone on the station say that one of the Twin Towers had been hit by a plane. I thought at first that it was a terrible accident (and also thought that probably no one - in the building, at least - had been hurt, since they were strong steel buildings). That is, I didn't take it too seriously. I even thought maybe this radio station was playing a sick joke, so I switched to another station, only to hear the same report. This station also said that they would now be going off the air (they never did this before, but they are located in midtown Manhattan). It was about this time I heard that the other Twin Tower was hit, too. Now I understood why the radio station was evacuating the building. I went to my mother's house to find out if she has heard from any family members who worked in the area. She heard from my sister soon after (whose building had been evacuated). My sister had to spend the rest of the day in Brooklyn, because the authorities weren't letting anyone over the bridge to Staten Island. But no one had heard from my sister's husband, who worked one block away from the Twin Towers. At this point we didn't know if his building had been hit, too, but we fould out (after about 4 hours of waiting) that he was okay and had been directed to New Jersey (from what I understand, all the workers in Manhattan - all 10 or 15 million of them - had been evacuated from their buildings, and from most of Manhattan, too). When I first realized how terrible things were over there across the water, I wanted to go over there and help. But, the authorities weren't letting anyone into Manhattan, and besides, I am not a strong or physically fit person, and would probably get in the way more than help. All I could do was pray. For some reason, I felt I should pray specifically that the people who were trying to get out of the Twin Towers would leave the buildings in an orderly fashion (so that the maximum number of people would survive). I remember praying about this for hours, until the ordeal was over (that is, until everyone who could get out was safe). I have heard people say, "Where was God when all this was happening?" (Implying that God should have prevented it.) Why do people forget that the human race was given a free will, which includes being free to kill if they wish. Since Eve first ate the forbidden fruit (God told her specifically not to eat from just that one tree), people have been doing ungodly, unloving things. But God isn't telling them to do these things. He wants us to do His will (love), but won't force us to. I know where God was that day. He was in the firefighters, police officers and others who helped save lives; in the office workers who remained calm and helped their co-workers. I could go on and on but simply stated, he was in millions of people that day and the days that followed. God is spirit, and when he does something, He does it in spirit. He acts through the hearts of people who are acting in love (concern for fellow man). To me, this was more real than if He had come out of the heavens in physical form and fixed our problems. I was more amazed at the grace bestowed on us that day, than the evil that caused it. Like many others, I cried for days about the lives that were lost, but I truly believe they have gone to a better place. New York City has been known as of the coldest, mean-spirited cities in the world, but I think that image is now forever changed. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: We were holding a Forecast conference that day. It was the last day of the conference. Over 300 burly steel men - mostly Presidents and Vice Presidents - were gathered in large rooms to hear what the economy would bring to the steel industry the next year. They didn't know it at the time, but their coveted forecast would soon be obsolete. That morning, before any of it happened, I was telling my co-workers that I dreamt the night before of planes crashing and debris falling and fire so hot it woke me out of my sleep. When I found out what happened, I realized my nightmare had become reality. I made a mad dash for the phone to call my boyfriend who worked only 15 miles from Ground Zero. Thankfully, he was all right. The details were sketchy and he knew as much as I did. Just that it happened - that maybe it was an accident. Then the second plane hit. Within a matter of minutes, the conference came to an abrupt halt. The hotel wheeled out tv carts and everyone scurried to the TVs to see what happened. The pandemonium of it all was so heart breaking that I had to leave the hotel. I got back to my parents home. I turned on the TV, flipped on MSNBC, cuddled up with their dogs and watched as the first tower collapsed. I was stunned. I opened my mouth to scream but nothing came out. All of the sudden, the impact of what happened erupted inside of me and I broke down. I cried, I sobbed, I screamed, I yelled. How dare anyone do this to us!? I was never so angry in my life. I was never so full of despair. Each time they played video of the plane crashing into the towers, it was like someone punching me in the heart. I remember what I wearing that day. Even down to the talisman I was never without. I haven't worn it since. It would be like reliving it all again in such a personal way. I couldn't get enough of the news coverage. I watched through the entire night. I barely slept, but when I did it wasn't peaceful. One year later, there has not been a day that's gone by where I haven't thought about what happened. When people ask what they could do to help, I say all they need to do is remember and to never forget. September 11, 2001 was a day that brought big, strong men and everyone in between down to their knees. It brought us closer as a community, as a family, as one. From this terrible tragedy, we somehow grew even stronger. Faith was restored in the American Spirit. Fifty years from now, when my grandchildren ask me where I was when it was September 11, 2001, I'll tell them exactly what I told here. I won't forget. Ever.
