I picked up my youngest son who was 1 at the time and held him so tight thinking of all those moms and dads that went to work that day and would never return to their families, the sons and daughters that they would never get to hug again, only in their dreams . My oldest son 4 on that day watched along side me and asked me " Mommy why ?" You know I still ask myself that same question everytime I think of that day . Here now 5 years later.WHY ?? My sons are both in school now and they remembered today at school and at the days end as I was tucking them in for the night we said a prayer and we gave a big hug to all who lost and those that were lost.I give my heart and soul to all the families of 9/11, may god give you peace. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, 2001 I was 7 months pregnant with my son and on bedrest. My 3yr old daughter and her babysitter were in the living room watching cartoons while I was in bed watching the Today show when they came across that the first tower had been hit by a plane. I yelled for our babysitter to come look and we both were just in shock (ofcourse we thought it was just an accident). But then we watched another plane come out the side of our view and crash into the second tower. I couldn't believe it I just started crying and hugging my daughter close - I couldn't understand how 2 planes could have the same accident within minutes of each other. I immediately called my husband at work and told him to watch the tv, I couldn't stop crying and hugging my daughter and my unborn baby boy in my belly. For days after that I couldn't get the image of the second plane going into the tower. It seemed like out of all the images I had seen that was the one that would not go away. I always think "oh my god what could those people be thinking? knowing that they are going to die". For a long time after that I couldn't even watch the news because it upset me so much and I was so close to the end of my pregnancy. Also, we had a hard time explaining to our daughter why the planes went into the buildings. She would see it on tv and say "Planes go boom", it still brings tears to my eyes when I think of my innocent little 2yr old saying and seeing something so horrific that I couldn't even handle as an adult. As the one year mark rolls by I think it was such a terrible thing, however, as Americans we have grown stronger TOGETHER and shown that nothing and nobody can bring us down. GOD BLESS AMERICA! I was supposed to meet a photog for a news conference in the Rayburn Office Building at 10:00, so I was taking my time getting dressed when I heard Charlie and Diane say a small plane had hit the WTC. I remembered the attack in 1993 and expected the worst. I was glued to the set, seeing the second plane hit live. It was only in the frame for a few seconds, but it seems a thousand thoughts went through my mind. I remember trying to rationalize what I was seeing: maybe it's the police or fire department eyeballing the fire, maybe it's a plane on approach that looks closer because of the telephoto lens. Then the fireball. I was late getting out of the house. It was a perfect late summer day in DC. I thought how terrible that something like this had to happen on such a beautiful day. I used my cell phone to check with the desk. They wanted me to send the photog I was meeting out with a producer to get reaction from the New York delegation after the news conference. The sidewalks were crowded with young, Congressional staffers walking in, getting off the Metro, getting to work late. They'd obviously been watching, too. The same look of disbelief was all over the place. I remember the jet engines overhead. They were there all the time, on the approach to National. Living there, you just shut them out. Couldn't help but hear them that morning. I took a shortcut through the southeastern entrance of Longworth and into the tunnels connecting the buildings in the Capitol complex. It was probably only a couple of minutes before Flight 77 hit the Pentagon. The desk couldn't reach me in the tunnels. The photog was out of touch coming up from the Rayburn parking garage. They got hold of us outside the news conference. But they were still confused about where to send us. They told us to standby. Big mistake. Within minutes the cell phone network in DC collapsed under the weight of all the calls. Military officers ? lots of one- and two-stars ? poured out of hearing rooms. They walked briskly down the halls. They looked like the guys to follow. My photog and I came out in the ?horseshoe,? a notch cut into the north side of Rayburn with a semi-circular driveway. An army captain in camo fatigues was standing beside a Humvee, trying to get his cell phone to work. We walked around the corner and say the thick, black smoke rising from the Pentagon. Unable to raise the desk, we decided the photog would head towards the Capitol and get whatever video he could. I?d try to find a landline and find out where the desk wanted us. I headed back to the apartment. The sidewalks were crowded again. I have never seen so many cell phones. I counted. Only one-in-three people were actually able to talk to someone. I got through from the apartment. I was called back to the bureau. The photog was to back up our regular photog at the White House. All I had to do was find him. I grabbed a bottle of water and a pair of cheap Wal-Mart walkie talkies that I figured might come in handy and headed back out the door. Back outside, I heard more jet engines. I was looking for the planes. While in the apartment, I never heard the sonic boom. F-16s from the North Dakota National Guard, flying out of Langley AFB in Virginia, had dropped out of war speed and taken up station over the city. At the moment, I was walking toward one of the biggest, and most recognizable targets in town. I relaxed a lot when I caught a glimpse of the familiar Falcon shape loitering up there. Capitol Police were well into evacuating the grounds when I got half way up the hill. I arrived behind the House Office Buildings just as they decided to move the perimeter across the street. Most of the cops were busy moving the barricades. People were trying to cross the street. One Capitol Police officer, directing the crowd looked over and we made eye contact for a second. I?d never seen him before, but he glanced down at my hill credentials. He looked around, as if making sure no one was watching, then motioned me with a slight head gesture toward the Capitol ? completely forbidden. I stepped off the curb, and he turned his back. Plausible deniability ? everyone in this town is hip to the act. I walked past a few people, staffers mostly, at least one Capitol cop, straight up the hill. No one stopped me, yelled at me, or asked me where I was going. I made it across Constitution, and onto the Capitol grounds. It was amazing. Except for the jets overhead, absolutely quiet ? no voices, no other manmade sounds. There was no one else around that I could see. Even before 9/11, some one was always there. You were never out of eyesight or earshot of security, even on a holiday weekend at midnight. I stood there for what seemed like a good half-minute trying to figure out what to do next. No camera, all I?d have is an eyewitness account if anything happened. But it was an incredible, unrepeatable experience. A Capitol Police officer called out to me from behind, I crossed the street, headed down the hill. I found my photog at the barricades, told him our assignments, and we went to work. She was crying on the phone and I could barely understand what she just said. All I know is that I heard her well enough to turn on the news. I woke my parents up saying that someone just bombed the Pentagon. As they came out and we were watching the news, we saw the second plane crash into the other tower. We thought it was just a replay of the first plane until we realized both buildings were on fire. We saw the collapse of both buildings. It was unbelievable. All we could do was pray. I went to work that morning ready to be used however God desired for me be used, knowing that none of my co-workers have the hope in Jesus that I know. Being a born-again christian I did not stress over any other attacks, but I still to this day grieve over what happened. I grieve over the loss so many people have experianced not just in New York, but at the Pentagon and all those who had loved ones on the planes. As we were working on our homework we were told that the Pentagon was hit by a plane. As my teacher rush to call her husband she left us alone. Since being in a school with a lot of military children many kids were worried there mothers and fathers would be working at this time. As the day drew on we were told only what the teachers wanted us to hear. Even thought we were released i was sent outside to talk to my friends, my mom was concern that we had seen to much violance this day. We trudged out into the stale air with a concern that we could be next. My friends and i sat at the street corner wondering who did this. We couldn't believe that our home was being attacked by a ruthless killer. We had wondered at the time were our superheros were. We found them in ourselves and in others. We would become a nation of unity and understanding, of courtesy and diversity, of happiness and bravery. But with all of this going on we all shed tears of sorrow for once in our lives we weren't protected by the loving care of our parents we got a taste of what it was like being truly scared and it was hell. My husband was out of the country on a mission trip and was suppossed to return home that day. It seemed like an eternity before we were able to contact each other. I sat there watching the news and have never felt more depressed or scared in my life. I wanted to know who would do this to our country and why. What had all those innocent people done that justified their deaths? I don't know if there will be another time in our lives when we again see the things that happened on September 11, 2001. I pray that I don't live through another day like that. I cannot imagine the struggles that all those families have endured and I would not wish that kind of pain on my worst enemy. My husband was delayed for a week and said he had never been so scared in his life. He was locked out of his country and really did not have a full understanding of what was going on. I have tremendous respect for all those who tirelessly worked to clean up the mess that the terrorists made in our country. I thank God that the devastation was not worse. I pray that all those who took part in the destruction will see the error of their ways and will no longer take part in activities aimed at hurting other people. After eating, brushing my teeth, heading upstairs, and changing, I turned on the radio to listen to some music. Instead of modern rock music, there were people screaming about "be under attack". Of course, I had no idea what they were talking about. As I finished up my homework, I started to get myself together and finally knew what was going on. Going to school, asking Mrs. Thompson what was going on, she didn't answer. Which was very, very strange. I turned to the direction she was staring at (which was the TV) and I saw two towers in flames. I though they were just High-rises on fire in Denver. And I thought to myself, "It's nothing too big right? Just a fire." The teacher turned up the volume and it was a news reporter talking about the second plane being hijacked by terrorists. Then it hit me, I began to knew what was going on. The intercom announced that today was an optional day to study and we we're allowed to watch the news. So we stayed in our seats and watched the for 30-minutes and re-watching the video of the plane slamming into the WTC's. Until the screen went black and it wen't to D.C. Showing the footage of a survallence camera showing a blur and an explosion in the Pentagon. Mrs. Thompson started to scream and spill out in front of us. She said that her husband worked their. For the first time in my life, I saw one of my teachers scream and cry like bloody hell in front of me. My classmates and were in totall shock. We didn't know what to do. Mrs. Henderson ran in and brought her to the hall to comfort her. As the day wen't by, and I walked home. My mom and I just stayed in silence. We would cry when we weren't near each other to show that we didn't care too much. But we did. When I wen't to sleep, I had dreams for the next week or so. They were about me the night before 9/11. Suddenly knowing what whould happen, so I would run to the phone and dial 911 and say theres going to be a plane that will crash into the WTC, Pentagon, and Pennsyvania. But no one would believe me. Because my job afforded me the luxury of working from an office at home, I began my normal morning routine. At 8:55 I walked from our house to the office that was located a mere 30 steps away. My mother-in-law was at her desk weeping into the phone. My brother-in-law John was standing in front of the television. As I rounded the counter that seperated the "break-area" from our desks I saw the pictures on the television. Within minutes the second plane struck and I was immediatly on the phone to my father. I was, of course, hysterical. After he had calmed me down, I walked to the house, where I called our oldest daughter, Tricia, who was a Freshmen at the University of Georgia. The phone woke her up and I had to break the news to her. Her best friend's father worked at the Pentagon, so her first order or business was to call Becky and see if she had heard from her dad. She also wanted to come home! I called my husband, who was out with our company's tree crew and made sure he was OK. I told him I wanted to go and get the kids from school, but I did not want to disrupt their day....motherly selfishness finally took over and I went to get them. Our two year old was thrilled that her Bubby and Bubba were going to be home for the day. I called my sister in Colorado to let her know what was going on. She was totally unaware of what was happening. I struggled with whether or not to let the kids to watch too much television. Finally, I decided to let the watch and ask questions. Jim and I explained as best we could....we were both so emotional. First and foremost in our explainations was that they were safe and that God was with us and that he loved us. God knew eveyone who perished this day and we have assurance that he will be with us in our final moments. This seemed to satisfy them and they went about their "day off". Our family will never forget this day. Strangely, it has drawn us closer to God and to each other as well as to the stranger that passes on the street. In the conversation i mentioned that the next day was to be September 11, not knowing the ensuing tragedies. But for some odd reason, when i mentioned that date it stuck with me. Anyways I went on to bed and woke up the next morning and went on to my high school like any normal day. When I reached 2nd period, the principal came on the intercome and mentioned that no one turn on the TVs until notified because we all have TVs in our rooms. I thought nothing of this and continued on that period and went on to 3rd. Right as I entered the classroom a friend of mine came up to me saying that a plane had crashed into a building. Of course I didnt believe him because he was known for making up stuff. But of course when our teacher turned on the TV I saw the WTC on flames and knew this really happened. At first sight, i thought of my parents at FEDEX, whom had an earlier scare like this when an employee tried to hijack a plane and ram it into the Memphis hub. Next, we went on with the day watching TV and learning more and more about the attacks. When I got home from school my family was all there watching TV and we were glued there for the next couple of weeks. From that day foward, that phone call i made and mentoined a date that will describe all evil will always remain with me. I arrived at school at the usual time- 7:10 (normal school starts at 9, but I have dance team practice). My dance team, Hyline, and I had stretched and kicked and were practicing our dance for the upcoming pep rally when we heard the announcement. It said something like, "Teachers, please refrain from turning on the televisions during your classes, something has happened in New York. PLease do not turn on the news." Of course, the whole drill team looked around in wonderment, what on earth could have happened? Our director, Mrs. Loomis, went into her office where she had a small white television. She stayed in her office for a while. Then at the end of practice, 9:30, she came out to the team during circle and told us that some planes had been hijacked and one had crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. We were all completely stunned, but we had absolutely no idea of the real terror going on. So, we all got dressed in the locker room. Someone turned on the radio and we listened to what was happening out in the world. Then, on my way past Mrs Loomis' office i saw the tv turned on and i saw the live footage of what was going on in New York. Another plane had crashed, the towers had begun to fall. I couldnt tear my eyes away from the screen. I wanted to stay in the office all day and watch. But Mrs Loomis made us go to class. Throughout the day, various teachers on their televisions on and we watched what was happening in New York. The same horrible footage, over and over again of the planes crashing, people jumping from windows, the towers falling and people running for their lives. School didn't seem important at all. Why did i have to be here? Were my relatives from Conneticutt ok? I just wanted to go home and cry. And I think i did as soon as i got home from school. I felt numb, I felt like all the stupid, trivial problems in my life were absolutely nothing compared to this. I turned to God for answers, how could He let this happen? What was the purpose? My faith took an interesting journey over the next couple of days, but I ended up stronger in my belief for God. Although the WTC and pentagon tragedies shocked our nation, it brought such a diverse country so much closer together. For a few days religion, race, gender didn't matter. People clung to strangers for help, our nation was a solid unit. We all leaned on each other for support. We were all so vulnerable, so fearsome we couldnt help but turn to each other for reassurance. Our nation has grown since September 11 and while that day will probably be one of the worst days in history, our country came out of it stronger than ever. I could not beleive what was happening to us. I of course as everyone else did, called family and friends to see if they too saw the heart renching view that I saw. I was filled with so many emotions from the footage I still see it in my mind today, not only because they have shown it over and over, but because it only takes one time to see a site like that to stay with you forever. Tell us your story: I was woken up the morning of September 11 by one of the members of our household telling me 'something terrible has happened with planes in New York'. I scrabbled for my glasses, and turned the TV on to CNN -- just in time to watch the first tower fall. It was Pagan Pride month -- I'm the Vice President of the Pagan Pride Project (http://www.paganpride.org), and we celebrate in September. One of those celebrations was supposed to be in Battery Park. I knew, as I watched that tower fall, that it would be a long time before anyone celebrated again. We spent the next few hours trying to reach my housemate's family in Brooklyn -- they were fine -- and watching. Just...watching. Staring at the TV as if someone, somewhere, could somehow give us some sort of understanding, some sort of handle on this. This wasn't about Islam, or enemies, or anything -- except the darkest shadows of the human soul, the cesspool of fear and hate that can only be answered with love, light, and tolerance. I got choked up, a lot; I am now, as I write this. And somewhere in the ashes of the Towers rests the soul of a former co-worker of my wife's, and we knew, that morning, that she probably was gone. The next twenty days was busy for us. Pagan Pride New York was moved to Washington Park. Pagan Pride Atlanta had to be canceled. Pagan Pride Los Angeles and Las Vegas were rescheduled. But I never heard a word of complaint, not one. For a while, there, we all -- Christian, Jewish, Pagan, Moslem, Ba'hai, everyone -- were one in our grief, and the extra work was nothing. He was in the first tower that was hit and the last one to fall. He was on the top floor for a ten minute meeting (which his coworder was supposed to go to but didnt) with one of his clients to talk about plans for decorating the whole floor.I didnt find out that my dad was in the towers until i came home to a house full of family. Everyone was there trying to contact him or anyone who might be with my dad. We tried for days. We called his cell phone nonstop and left him all sorts of messages but all we could do was sit and wait. I didnt go to school for the rest of the week. I was just too upset. In fact i was so upset that i made myself sick. The next week i went back to school and had everyone coming up to me and asking me if i was ok and did they find him and watching it all day over and over. It was really hard to get through the days. Meanwhile my ex-sister was supposed to be married on September 14. We had to rescedule the whole thing. Then on September 25 i got off the bus from school and saw two cop cars sitting in front of my house. I ran to the door and asked my mom where dad was. The policeman said they found his body and right then i exploded. I fell to the floor and couldnt stop crying. I started to regret a lot of things that i did and didnt do. You never really know how special someone is until theyre gone and its so true. At the service for my dad I made a long speech in front of a church crowded with people. It was the hardest thing ive ever had to do. It was so hard keeping the tears back but with the help of my dad i did it. I felt like a pat of me died along with him. I didnt want to do anything. I felt really bad for my mom because she had run the company my father also left behind. He was the owner of Colonial Art Decorators and was well repected in the city of New York. She didnt have any time to really grieve for my dad. Although time does go on and we have to push on with our lives as much as we dont want to and are reminded everyday of what happened. We just recently had to shut down the company that my dad loved and put so much time into. There was no more money and no one would help us at all. We asked and asked but no one cared about the business as much as we did. I was supposed to run the company and now i cant. It really upsets me when i think about it because not only did i loose my dad (the only person whole get me to smile if i was mad or upsest) but we lost everything my dad worked for and more. Tomorrow it will be three years and its my first year in college.Its been really hard these past couple days and writing this story really helped relieve some of the saddness. It was such a beautiful morning ? you know the kind, a sky of clear blue with just a few puffy white clouds. It was the second week of a new job on Capitol Hill and I was feeling good. As I drove to the Post Office in Old Town Alexandria (the starting point of my daily commute), I heard over the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center in New York. The announcers mused that it was surely an accident and I was thinking that it must have been one of those small prop planes that had gone off course somehow. Not thinking any more of it, I walked to the Metro at Braddock Road as usual and got on the yellow line towards the District. After making my transfer at L?Enfant Plaza and getting off at Capitol South, I made my way up to street level where the Cannon House Office Building and the Library of Congress stand on opposite sides of First Street ? the Capitol a short distance away. Having come out of the narrow, darkened tunnels that make up the Metro system, I was again struck by the beauty of that day. But as I walked the two blocks towards my office, I could tell something was not quite right. It wasn?t anything obvious, just a weird feeling I was getting seeing people standing in clusters on the street and talking more than usual to others in the coffee shop that I stopped in on my way. I overheard things like ?a fire on the mall,? ?a white plane flying over the Capitol? ? not knowing what they were talking about, I moved on. When I got to my office, I looked around the corner where a small TV is usually tuned in to C-SPAN so that the lobbyists in my building can watch our Congress in action. Today, it seemed that everyone in the building was standing there watching it together. I put my things in my office and made my way down the hall to where the TV was and saw that is was tuned to CNN. Displayed on the screen were the two towers of the WTC with smoke billowing out of them. Everyone just stood there watching with eyes wide, not knowing what to make of what was going on ? they looked worried. Of course, they knew what I did not at that moment ? it wasn?t a prop plane that hit one of the Trade Center buildings, it was a commercial jet -- fully loaded with fuel AND passengers; it wasn?t just one tower, it was both; and that the Pentagon had also been hit. I was dumbfounded to think that my yellow line train had just pulled through the Pentagon station ? was it at the same moment that the plane was delivering its lethal payload? It all began to come together ? so many people on the street talking about planes and fires. As we continued to watch, we heard that there was a plane unaccounted for and that there was a possible bomb at the State Department. Then, one of the guys who works both in my building and at one of the House office buildings rushed in and said that the office buildings were being evacuated. I started thinking: the missing plane, the Capitol ? bombs, fires. Am I safe here? As I was going over these things in my mind, I was staring at the scene in New York still displayed on the TV screen and then ? the south tower collapsed. I couldn?t believe it. All those poor people! They just went to work like any other day ? just like me! I went back to my office and tried to call my husband. I was trying to decide what I should do ? do I stay at work (two blocks from the Capitol)? With the Hill being evacuated, should I wait until most of the people have left the city? I couldn?t get through on the phone. I tried a few more times then went back to the TV. I heard that the Metro wasn?t running the yellow line over the bridge to Virginia. At this point I was wondering how in the world I was going to get home if I decided to go. I went back to my office and the phone rang, it was my friend out in Fairfax. She said she had called to be sure that I had left ? I told her I wasn?t sure if that was the best thing to do. I thought she was overreacting. Did I really need to panic? She finally convinced me that I needed to leave the city ? but then the question was how? She and I both started trying to call people who we knew would be driving out of the city -- I really didn?t want to go underground in the Metro system ? who knew what could happen? We couldn?t really work out the ride, so I ended up with two choices ? take the Metro or walk. I decided I would try the Metro, but would take the blue line if I had to ? that way was almost totally underground, which I was nervous about, but it still seemed better than trying to walk the seven miles to my house. By this time, the second tower had collapsed. It was time to leave. I went to the Capitol South Metro, hurried in and asked the station manager what the best way was to get to Virginia (not knowing if the yellow line was running there over the bridge, by the Pentagon and the airport). She asked where I wanted to go, I said it didn?t matter. I figured anywhere in Virginia was better than getting stuck in DC. I took the blue line ? it was the first day of many to come where there were no stops at the Pentagon or National Airport. The train got incredibly crowded as we headed through downtown, but people were talking quietly, nobody was panicked. When the train got outside at Arlington Cemetery, I called my husband. I got voice mail. I left a message that I was heading home and that he should too. I loaned my cell phone to the man sitting next to me who wanted to call his wife. When I got off the train at Braddock Road, it was so surreal. I had gotten on in the morning when our world was at peace and gotten off when we were at war. Police officers were on the platform and there was a smell lingering in the air. It caught in your throat even from that distance away ? it was the burning jet fuel from the Pentagon. I made it home to an empty house and turned on the TV ? something I didn?t get very far away from for the next week or two. The news played the scenes of the planes flying into the towers over and over again and of the building collapsing over and over again. When my husband got home, he looked at the TV for the first time that day just as they were showing the south tower collapsing. He had the same reaction that I did when I saw it ? eyes wide, hand over mouth, a sigh of ?oh, no? and then a tear springing to his eye. I turned on the set and sat down,only to watch the second tower be hit by what I thought had been a sightseeing plane. I knew then as we all must have, that this was terrorism and radical Muslims were behind it. When the Pentagon was hit, other landmarks.. Capitol building, White House, Liberty Bell, Sears Tower...anything that symbolized America, its spirit or status in the world,seemed targets and I prepared for further horrors. As news broke about the plane in Shanksville, I sensed instantly what must have happened and when reports filtered through news,about the cell phone calls, it was confirmed. At the same time, there was that bizarre,selfish relief that no one I knew was involved. Within hours, I learned otherwise, though thankfully through good news. A friend's daughter, had been late to work for her job on the 94th floor of one of the towers. My daughter's sister-in-law had been sent on an out-of- town assignment from the Pentagon and her Navy fiance' had been scheduled for noon that day. A few months later, through contact with former classmates, there was a tragic note. The youngest son of a classmate had been at the Towers for a breakfast meeeting and arriving early, he headed up to the restaurant 'on top of the world'. He called home to say where he was and that they thought they could hear their rescuers arriving, then nothing more. Then last week, in conversation, a woman spoke of her friend's only son, who had been a chef in that restaurant and we realized they had been together at the end. The point? All of us are connected in this world, by our humanity if nothing else, and inhumane acts rupture that connection briefly. The end does not justify the means. I don't hate Muslims or Islam as a result. As an historian and a Catholic, I can look back on history and see many horrors committed in the name of religion, including my own faith. Humans act with free will, a gift from God, and we often misuse this gift. Let us each attempt to make peace work in our own small sphere. I thought I was unconnected to the horror, but I was. I had just flipped to the station when suddenly I realized that he (MANCOW) was crying. First I thought it was a prank (as always). MANCOW doesn't cry!! However, I heard the fear in his voice, which made be realize it wasn't a joke; and finally I heard him say that the second twin tower was hit by another airplane. I had no idea what he was even talking about (not having heard about the first attack). However, just the fear in his voice terrified me. Regardless, I thought for sure it was some kind of freak accident. I arrived to work about five minutes later. I ran in the door and turned on the television. That's when I saw the most unbelievable thing I had ever seen in my life. I realized it was intentional and that it was an attack on America. It looked like a movie. I remember thinking, "how could this happend", "who could do such a thing", "is the world ending"? I couldn't keep my eyes off the television for the next two weeks, at the minimum. In those following hours, days, weeks; my whole life seemed so small. I felt this huge burst of wanting to help in some way. I watched all of the families cry over loved ones they had lost. I listened to all of the cell phone conversations during the attack. I heard all of the survivor's horrifying stories. I decided to never, ever take my loved ones for granted. I also decided to be a blood and organ donor. I became more patriotic. I became more interested in our Country and our leaders. I even became more interested in politics and the media and history (things I used to prefer to avoid)! What I mostly pondered on was trying not to watch the news (to stay out of depression) and wondering if the world would end or change for the good. I though: "if this incodent has changed MY life so dramatically, what does that mean for the entire Country"? After 9-11 not only has it changed my way of living, my priorities, my time spent with family, and many other things; I have learned to thank God for every single day that I am alive and for everything good in this world. I am definately a more optimistic person know. And even though it was a horrible attack (understatement) and something that nobody could ever deserve, I am hopeful it will force a change in our world, like it forced a change (for the better) on me. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Im Kathleen Lynch. I was 38 years old and the mother of a brand-new Kindergartner on Sept 11 2001. I was also the daughter of great mother, Esther. Esther had a heart attack at 9:45 AM on Sept 11 2001. I was happy that morning. I was enjoying the picutre perfect day, walking in the park, when a sense of dread overcame me, although I didn't know why. I went home and turned on my computer at approximately 9:20 AM to see headlines on AOL about the crashes. I thought it was a joke at first. I actually went to my normal internet haunt first, before turning on the TV, because I didn't beleive my eyes. Of course the talk of the other people in the chat room told me otherwise, and I turned on the TV in time to watch the first tower collapse. I screamed for my husband to come down. He held me while I cried.. all those people.. all those people. We watched as the second tower fell.. then I thought of my mother, 81, living alone since my father had died almost 3 years before, and called her to break the news to her gently. The phone was answered by paramedics. She had suffered a heart attack. While she didn't die that day, she never left the hospital again, and really ceased being my strong, wise mother at that moment. All that was left was a shell, and that too left this world on Jan 4 2002. I wanted to go get my daughter from school so badly.. at that time we had no idea what would happen next of course. She had a half day anyway, and I went to pick her up at the scheduled time. The other moms were ashen faced.." Did you hear?" "What's happening?" When I told them my mother had had a heart attack they just started at me. To this day people don't know how to treat me.. they either act like I'm a martyr or they act like I didn't say it. I can imagine how they treat those who's loved ones died in the actual buildings! Driving home, I saw several muslim women in full purdah pushing baby carriages.. I just glared at them. Later that day, a muslim convience store worker was obviously happy with the turn of events, while a roofer behind me in the line seethed. I got out of there fast.. in this neighborhood, you don't stick around when there is a fight brewing between a two fisted Irish American and someone acting like an enemy of the state! When we realized at some point the pentagon was involved, I really thought that this was it. I can remember thinking about supplies, how to get out of the city. By the next day, I had taped flags all over my '85 chevy cavilier. I was angry, ready to kick the butt of whoever did this. I still am.. liberal extremists make me want to puke, my mother is dead, my daughter scarred for life by these events, yet assholes still blow up SUVs to make environmental statements. So what if I'm a urban redneck.. I'm damn proud of it! The following weeks were marked by people in this city.. white, black, hispanic, asian.. exchanging looks through car windows on the highway and sharing tears... packed church services... so this urban redneck rejoices in the unity of ZTRUE Americans at that time, and prays we can carry that spirit through the coming elections, though of course we wont, sigh.
