I was in the hotel with fellow associates and watching CNN as the 2nd plane hit. I will never forget that for the rest of my life. My parents who also live in Naples Florida and my father who has been a crane operator (belonging to Local 14) his whole life heard about the tragic events and my mother and himself packed the car in a couple of hours and drove to New York and my Dad was at Ground Zero within a few days of 9/11 operating the largest crane in the United States to clean up the mess. I am so proud of him even though he feels he wasn't doing anything out of the ordinary. He dosen't realize how much he did do. He and my mother dropped there everyday lives to help others. My family means so much to me and the lives that were lost will never, ever be forgotten. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I grew up in New York City, the daughter of a NYPD officer. I remember perfectly well where I was and what I was doing in the city the day of the first attack in 1993. I was 9 years old and the fear I felt about where my Dad was consumed me. But eventually my dad was injured in the line of duty and he retired to a small farm-town in Vermont. So on the morning of September 11th, 2001 I was a senior, sitting in my first period Advanced Placement American Goverment Class. When the class was interrupted by another teacher entering to tell the students that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, I was overcome again with fear. When the events of the day unfolded even more, it became clear just how much my life would change because of this attack. Cell phones weren't working and therefore I couldn't call my family to see if my pregnant cousin and her husband had made it out of their offices in both towers. And I watched in horror as I watched the towers fall, knowing that I had just seen the police officers, port authority officers and firefighters running into those very same buildings. I didn't know how many of my friends from back home had just lost their father's from the precint. How many little daddy's girls like myself were watching their father be taken from them. When I got home later that afternoon, I met my Dad on the front porch and gave him the biggest embrace to this day. I cried and thanked God that my Father wasn't there that day. If he hadn't been hurt just a short while before, he would have been at Ground Zero that day. Sometimes, what seems like a setback or punishment is really a blessing in disguise. My heart is with each and every child who lost their parent that day in the line of duty. Your mom and dad are HEROES and you should be so very proud to call yourself their child. It was also the day I realized that we are just like all other countries in the world...vulnerable to attack. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember my Mother calling my house and waking my husband. She told him that an airplane hit one of the WTC towers. We both went back to sleep thinking it was a small passenger plane. When I woke up, I went downstairs. My husband should have left for work at that time but he was sitting in front of the television and watching the news. I asked him what was going on. He told me what had happened. My husband said, "I was told not to go to work for security reasons and the city I grew up in has been attacked". We live in Arizona but my husband was born and grew up in Queens, New York. I can't say the name of the company he worked for at that time, here in Arizona, due to privacy and security. The thing I remember the most was watching television and seeing the people jumping and falling from the burning buildings of the WTC Towers. Then I remember watching the people on the street who saw the people falling from the buildings, and watching the mortified looks on their faces. My husband and his mother both worked in the WTC buildings when they lived in New York. The absolute worst part of it was getting the call from my husband's sister, telling us that someone my husband knew was in one of the towers when it collapsed. He was a police officer and was in one of the WTC Towers when it collapsed. He did not survive. I remember being glued to the television for about 3 months after the attacks and then I had to stop watching for awhile. I went to work on the day of the attacks and it was so strange not hearing planes fly over the place where I worked. It was scary because it was so quiet. I didn't really get any work done that day. It seemed the whole world was sitting in front of the television that day no matter where they were. I have heard that anyone who was killed in the attacks on 9/11/01 have their cause of death filled in as homicide on their death certificate. We need to remember that ALL of these people were murdered. I watched the attacks on television last night (9-11-02). I sobbed all over again and the pain has not lessened at all. Debbie, our assistant entered my operatory and told us that the first Twin Tower had been hit by an airplane. I remember that she asked us : ?Do you think it?s an accident?? I felt with a horrible certainty that it hadn?t been an accident, and told her so. Deb made two more trips into my room, each one with a new tale of a plane crash. The two towers and the Pentagon had been hit. A plane was missing. No one knew where the President was. The staff and patients all crowded into our conference room to watch our tiny TV. The reception was bad, and it seemed to add to the unreality of the images that were being televised. I wanted to cry, and couldn?t. I knew I should be frightened, horrified and grief-stricken, but I couldn?t feel a thing, just a numbness. All I wanted was answers, and of course at that time there weren?t any. I had just dropped off my two oldest children at school and had returned home. Upon getting out of their car seats and entering our home, my two youngest children and I proceeded to spend a little quality time playing with a variety of toys. After a while, I excused myself to the dining table to catch a bite of breakfast and a cup of coffee. On went the television, in order for me to catch up on a little of the latest news. Nothing could've prepared me for what I witnessed next. There in front of me was the pictures of the two planes crashing into the World Trade Center. As the news unfolded, I began to learn of the other two plane crashes as well. I experienced a multitude of emotions at that moment, from utter shock, to anger, to sorrow and ultimately forgiveness. I ran to the children I had home with me and held them tight, glad to have them with me during this time, and all the while offering a prayer of healing for the victims and those they left behind, as well as a prayer of forgiveness for those who caused such a catastrophic event. From this moment, until now, and into the future, this day will remain a time for me to reflect up all those whose lives have been changed dramatically by these course of events. I put on the coffee, grabbed the paper from the day before, and sat down in front of the tv to start my day. gotta have my news. I wasn't prepared for what I was about to see. I have direct tv, and my abc, cbs, nbc and fox, come out of New York. No sooner Had I turned on my TV, there was a news break. Plane hits WTC....I couldn't believe what i was seeing. How could a pilot be so stupid, I asked myself. Like he didn't see them comming! I watched in disbelief, fire comming from what seemd to be about 10 story's. Those poor people. They didn't even know what hit them. All I kept thinking was, that stupid ass pilot. What was he, drunk or something. How do you just slam into a building? i hope they sue the hell out of that airline. Then the unthinkable happened. Another plane, hit the other tower! As i watched the clip, i new this was no accident. My heart felt like it was going to pop right out of my chest. For the first time in my life, i felt scared. How could somethig like this happen. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a public high school teacher of tenth grade English 2 students in the small town of New Caney, Texas. On 9-11, our Advanced English 2 class had just begun at 9:00 a.m. and had heard about the first plane going into the first tower. We have Channel One programming in our classrooms, so we were watching the events as they unfolded. My students and I were watching when the second plane crashed into the second tower. I felt a sense of panic and fear sweep over me as I realized it was no accident. Then we heard of the plane crashing into the Pentagon, and finally the last plane crashing in Pennsylvania. I just remember thinking, "When will this end? When will all of this just stop?" It seemed there was no end in sight. Obviously, we were all fixated on the images and could not have class at all. I just felt such an immense fear at that point. I wanted to run out of the building, but I knew I could not panic for my students' sake. When the first tower began to crumble however, I felt my knees begin to get weak, and I had to sit against a wall. Tears streamed down my face as I realized the enormity of what I had just witnessed. Little did I know the other tower was about to do the same. I knew I had just seen thousands of people meet their final fate and had watched their very souls be taken from this earth. I felt as if I had intruded, although unintentionally, on their very last personal moment of life. When the other tower collapsed, I wept openly, calling out to God, "Why?" and "Please just make all of this stop." I began to pray for all of the victims and their dear families in front of my students, not fearing any future reprimand from admimistration because I had no other choice but to call on my God and Savior, my sustainer of life. And then, it did all seem to stop for the time being. I believe it took my students a few minutes to realize what they had just seen was very real and not just a scene from a movie. Then they became intensely curious about the number of people who had been in the buildings. We speculated a little, and then I felt compelled to tell them that their lives were going to change from this moment forward. I told them I didn't know how or when, but life would not be the same anymore. They had witnessed an historic event that they would remember for a lifetime. In that moment, we became part of each other's lives forever. I knew that for the rest of their lives whenever they looked back on this fateful day, they would remember where they were and what they were doing and who they were with, as would I. We were bonded in that moment. We saw, we were afraid, and we wept together in that moment. When Christmas came, I wrote each of them a letter encouraging them to hug someone and let the people they love know how much they were loved and appreciated because we all have been reminded that we are not promised tomorrow. You may never get another chance to say the things you really need to let others know. Thank you for giving Americans the chance to remember this day in a unique way. I do hope they decide to call this "Patriot Day" for all those patriots who died that day, as well as for all those who helped total strangers to safety. They are truly patriots. I was the only one at home and sleeping when the phone kept on ringing. I wasn't going to get up and answer it but after it rang for the third time I got up and went to see who it was. It was my dad telling me that he heard on the radio that a plane flew into one of the World Trade Center towers...he didn't think it was serious, maybe just a biplane. I was going to just go back to sleep thinking it was no big deal, but I decided to check it out anyway. When I turned on the TV there was a picture of both of the towers smoking heavily and news reporters trying to relay information to viewers. I got on the phone with my dad and told him that it wasn't just one plane, but two planes had crashed into both towers. Also, I told him that they were regular commercial flights. He couldn't believe it...he was on a train to work and said to keep him informed. I watched some more when it was reported that another plane had crashed into the Pentagon and by then, they had declared it a terrorist attack. I was so petrified and shocked that I could do nothing but sit there and watch, but I did put a videotape in and start recording as I knew this was history in the making. I called my mom at work to tell her what was going on and she was in shock, also. When the towers eventually collapsed I called both my parents who were relaying information to their workplaces through me, as they didn't have a TV nearby. It was really a situation where we could say nothing to describe the moment, and even the TV reporters I was watching did not know what to say. I sat in front of that TV ALL DAY LONG - from the time I turned it on until the time my parents got home around 5 pm. Even for days after our TV station was tuned to nothing but the news. It took me so long to get over watching all of that on TV and trying to soak it in, that I can't possibly imagine what was going on for those family members of the victims who were watching and learning exactly as I was. I had just come home from New York City, exactly one month before that to the date, from spending the whole summer there. My apartment looked right out onto the World Trade Center and every single night from my window when I looked out I would see all of the lights and the Twin Towers sticking out above everything else. I am, though, one of those who watched horror struck while the events happened on TV. A friend called (lets call her "J") and told me to turn the station while at the same time I was rattleing off about some talk show. She kept trying to interrupt me. I finally got it! Something was wrong. I could hear panick in her voice. I turned the station and watched the second plane hit the tower and then the pentagon was hit. "J" become frantic. Her husband work's involves the president of the USA and he frequents the Pentagon. All day she waited. It wasn't until 6:00 p.m. that she finally knew he was alive and well. At the same time another friend (lets call her "C") was very anxious as well. Her husband has ties to the Pentagon also. She didn't hear from her husband until around 3:00 p.m. Another friend (lets call her "D") had just transfered to the Pentagon. She had just arrived back from Korea after being separated from her family for a year. I had thought she was station in the same area of the pentagon that the plane hit. I called her that morning, praying for everything I was worth. She answered the phone. I just cryed. She was ok. Her two beautiful children still had a mother. She work midshift. Another friend (Lets calll her "CA") lost 6 friends from the incident at the Pentagon. My daughter's godmother's sister just quit her job at the twin towers two weeks prior but she lost so many friends. After an incident such as this it brings us back to the value of humanity. Tell us your story: I was at work doing some light cleaning when a co-worker came in and said a plane had just hit the World Trade Center in New York. I instantly thought of it as an accident. I turned on the radio and moments later, the announcer was screaming that another plane just hit the other tower. They were immediately talking of terrorism, but I was trying to figure out the odds of two plane accidents at the World Trade Center in one day. It wasn't long before I accepted the fact that it was an act of terrorism. My co-worker had gone into a massage appointment with a client. I sat by the radio and took notes the whole hour. I was in shock, but took notes as the plane crashed into the Pentagon and as the plane crashed in Pennsylvania. I wanted to go home and be with my family. I wanted my husband, my children, my parents and brothers and sisters. I wanted us all to just huddle and hold each other. No daily things seemed important anymore. Everything I ever worried about or spent time pouring over seemed very, very small. The full impact still has not completely hit me. I felt then and still feel a giant, empty hole inside of me. I feel extreme anger that these terrorists took away my freedom as I once knew it. I felt the pain of taking my "very cool" seventeen year old son to a church service and comforting him as he cried uncontrollably the whole time. He said to me "Mom, my whole life I have lived inside a bubble of safety and today that bubble has burst." It was all in a matter of minutes... we lost our lives as we knew it. When I first heard the news on the radio, I thought oh a small plane hit a building, we changed the channel. When I walked into my office, i found out differently. A man who I had been training for a couple of weeks, who joked all the time, came into work a little earlier that morning. He told me that an airplane crashed into one of the towers. Of course I did't believe him being the joker he was. He tried so hard for me to believe him. The more he tried, the less I believed. Tell us your story: I am a junior and a history major at Vanderbilt University and was getting ready to go to my 9:35 history class when I heard about the incident at the World Trade Center. I was going through my usual morning routine when I heard a friend of mine, down the hall, talking very loudly to someone on her telephone while listening to her TV with the volume turned up very loudly. So, I turned on my television and I saw what had happened. At first I was just so overwhelmed by the burning towers that the whole situation did not register with me quite yet. I spent some time watching events unfold but then had to go to class. Once I got there, all anyone could talk about was what had happened. Some people had had earlier classes or had not checked the news before hurrying to class and thus had no idea that this act of terrorism had even happened. The professor said some things, and then started to lecture. As the day progressed, things began to hit me, and everyone else, harder. Some people cried, others had blank looks on their faces and some, although I do not know how, went about as if nothing had occurred. Many of my classmates said it was when they saw the towers collapse that all of their emotions were let loose. The situation was especially poignant for me since my family is from New York and my parents grew up near the city. The first day was one of astonishment and disbelief. I do not remember crying on Septemeber 11, but I know I did on the morning of September 12 when I found out that a family member of mine, although distant, had probably been killed in one of the towers. I do not know how I will look back on this event in the years to come. All I know is that I will never forget it. My story is not special but my heart was there in New York and Washington DC and Pennsylvania and my heart fell when I heard of the cowardice attack. I was transfering to my last bus on the way to work, 6:30 am. The bus driver say's, " You won't believe what just happened." He told me that an Airplane had flown into one of the World Trade Center Towers. At first everyone thought there had been an accident. No one had radios or anyway to check out the news. The bus driver only new from his dispatch station. I finally arrived at work to see my co-workers huddled around a little tiny TV in one 9 X 9 cubicle. I heard the the second tower was hit and the Pentagon as well. I and everyone else were in tears, we couldn't stop crying and holding hands and nothing could tear us away from that awful sight. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, i had just gotten home from working a long night shift, and i had brought home doughnuts for breakfast. As i walked in the door, i noticed that my dad was in the kitchen watching the today show with Matt Lauer and Katie Couric. All i could see on the program was the large black clouds of smoke pouring out of the World Trade Center in New York.I thought how awful the sight was and wondered what was the cause. Soon after i had thought about the causes, the reports came in that apparently a plane had crashed into the tower. I knew that this was a terrible plane accident not unlike the past previous plane accidents, only this time a plane had crashed into a building instead of the ground or the ocean. I sat down to eat my breakfast of the doughnuts that i had brought home, and later about twenty minutes later footages of a second plane crashing into the other tower of the World Trade Center came into view. I knew immediately that this was no accident and that we were under attack. I continued to listen to the television reports about the FBI investigating hijackings of planes before the crashes, and knew that it was completely related. I went into the living room and told my dad about the rumors of hijackings taking place on the planes that crashed into the towers, and he nodded his head yes. He had been on the computer, possibly reading related news about the attacks. By then he had gone to bed and i had done the same, with the news on my television while i slept. When i had woken up later in the afternoon, the news coverage was on every channel i could think of, and the depression i was going through was increasing. They continually showed replays of both of the towers collapsing to the ground and i couldnt believe my eyes and what had transpired while i was asleep. Dan Rather on CBS was the anchorman that i had frequently kept up to date with during the afternoon. This was the most depressing day of my life, and the days that had followed had been very hard and sad. I didnt know what this would mean for this country, but that we and the world was going to change forever. We were at war, and the president had said that it would be a long war against whatever enemy had done this to us, even though all the sources had matched Osama Bin Laden to the attacks. I also remember never being so angry before in my entire life, and that i would have killed to have Bin Laden's head put on a stake. It was the closest i had ever come to joining the military. That night i remember all the gas stations in the city being jam packed with customers loading up on gas, because they had said the attacks on the World Trade Center would possibly raise the prices of gas considerably. Days later i remember collecting all the material on 9/11 i possibly could in remembrance of the terrible day. I hope decades from now if i have children, that i can remember where i was on that horrible day, and tell my kids what happened on that day. It was truly the day the whole world cried. I was at work getting ready to do my morning routine, morning pep talks, check supplies, go to the bank, etc. My wife called me to tell me that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane or something or bombed. I said "wow!" I hung up after a few minutes and told everybody what happened. It didn't effect us at that time but I still turned on a radio just to see what was going on. A little while later we heard about the second plane crashing into the second tower. We were all stunned and speachless. One of us asked what the hell was going on but no one had an answer. My wife called again and confirmed what we heard. Shortly after the initial shock wore down I started feeling sad for all the lost lives and their families. I continued my routine. I was driveng to the bank while the radio spoke of possible terrorist attacks and then The Pentegon was struck by yet another plane. At that time I knew that terrorists had to be involved, possibly Saddam Hussein, and my sadness turned into hatred as I thought that this was going to turn into Round 2. It was now time for me to mentally prepare myself for deployment. You see I am a member of the Alabama National Guard in an infantry unit. I am also a Desert Shield/ Storm Veteran. When I heard that any plane that doesn't land will be shot down and about the actions of the heros of Flight 93 I felt so much pride, sadness, fear, and so many other emotions that I didn't know what to think. After I listened to radio reports all day and closed up shop, I went home and watched as much coverage as I could. Again, I was saddened, to tears and sobs this time, and even more so when they talked about Flight 93. I backed The President in all of his decisions for "a war against terror" and was ready to do whatever he asked of me as a soldier. On October 3rd I received the phone call I'd been expecting. Two days later I was rolling out, leaving my family behind, knowing only that I'd be gone for a year, possibly two. This was not my first deployment with my wife, but this time was differant, I have young children who don't quite understand what's going on. Even I didn't. You grow up knowing that we are the World Superpower, and you see terrorism going on all over the world, except here. Then all of a sudden it has happened in your own back yard. How do you explain that? We got our orders the next day. My company was going to be close to home providing homeland security, an equally important mission as the one overseas against terrorism. Fortunatly, nothing has happened where I'm stationed, maybe we're doing a good job with our assignment. On September 11, 2002 as I wathced some of the evening T.V. comemerations, news stories, and such, I sat on the couch and cried again as the hatred swelled up inside of me again. A car passed me on the road earlier in the afternoon. On it's rear window was written "'LET'S ROLL!' - FLIGHT 93." Tears swelled in my eyes. I'll be deactivated soon, my mission complete and I'll be back with my family on a regular basis again. I wish I could have done more, but who knows what the future holds for me.
