Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at work, sitting at my desk when a colleague came in and told me that he had just heard that a plane had hit the WTC. I didn't give it too much thought. I assumed it was a small plane. A few minutes later we heard that another plane had hit the towers and that's when I knew it was a deliberate act. We ran into the conference room and watched the towers burning on TV. it was horrible and at first all I could think of was the poor people above where the plane hit. I never imagined what would happen next. We watched the tower fall and I was in tears. I went into the street and looked down 5th avenue and saw one tower standing and on fire. it was surreal. Thousands of people on the street. People crying and lines at every pay phone. I was 8 months pregnant and felt so sick. My husband is a NYC firefighter and he was out on medical leave that day. We live in Putnam County so it wasn't so easy for him to rush to the towers. I am so grateful for that. 4 firefighters from his house were lost that day. I remember waking up the next day and feeling kind of achy and tired as we hadn't had much sleep the night before. Then I looked over at my husband and felt that I had no right to complain about being tired or anything else I was one of the lucky ones that still had a husband. I felt that way when my daughter was born on October 22nd 2001 as well. In the days following the attack, I spent a lot of time with my husband at his fire house on west 31st street. It was a very emotional time. The out pouring of concern and love from the community was incredible. Flowers notes and candles everywhere. Tons of food, clothing and anything anyone could think of was dropped off. I cannot believe that a whole year has passed since the tragedy took place. I am so grateful that I did not know anyone personally that perished that day but my heart breaks for those that suffered such an incredible loss. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was watching the international news channel when my mom called and told me to turn on the regular news channel. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. The images I was seeing was of the first tower burning with the second plane coming and hitting the second tower. They just kept replaying that. I called my husband at work and told him right away. He was shocked, also. I was still watching the news when they said that a bomb had gone off at the pentagon - I think it took them a while to realize it was another hijacked airline. Then they started talking about another missing airplane. I was having such a hard time comprehending what was happening. I was crying and I kept saying "Oh my God". My son was 3 years old at the time and he didn't know what to think. My husband (I was on the phone with him again after the pentagon was hit) kept telling me to calm down. Needless to say, by the time I got to work I was almost hysterical. Every person that walked into work was in shock or crying. When a very good friend of mine got to work, we found out that her sister's fiance worked at Cantor Fitzgerald on the 101st floor of the north tower. They had not heard from him. She started getting phone calls from her sister who had been hearing bits and pieces from her fiance's family about phone calls he had made to his family. It was very disturbing. He died in those attacks. I never got a chance to meet him, but I've heard from many people that he was a wonderful person. She was very lucky to have known him and loved him. After I heard about all of this I decided to do something to make some money for Cantor-Fitzgerald (that is where my friend's sister wanted the money to go). I made over 700 flag pins and sold them for $1.00 each. We managed to raise $1600.00 for Cantor-Fitzgerald. It wasn't a lot, but I guess it helped. I also had my son's school make cards to send to the fire dept working at ground zero. They were very precious. I still deal with the trauma of the whole thing daily, but I think I am finally getting back to a somewhat normal life with my husband and my son's help. Even though I didn't personally know something, I really affected me. I have been extremely saddened and touched by stories about victims and survivors. My life is different now. I live take one day at a time and live each day as if it were my last. God bless all of the victims families, fire fighters families, police officers families, etc. You will forever be in my heart and prayers. I heird people talking about an air plane and a biulding I was not sure all what happend. Then I walk in to my class room and find that an air plane had run into a twin tower. None of the teachers put in on T.V. Exsept for one person and he turned it off. I went home and whatched are television to find out what all happend and on every channel I saww an air plane going in to a Twin tower then next I found that a nother air craft had flowen into the other one we new it was not an accident. We whatched over and over what all happend. Then a couple of minutes later we saw the pentagon hit also.my grandmother called and we talked about it. Then we saw another one hit the ground in Pennsilvania. We are lucky to have Bush because he told all of the air craft to land and fast because one might have off hit the White house. Tell us your story: When I walked into 2nd Period on September 11 a tv was on and the horrific pictures of what was going on in New York were on it. Our teacher Mrs. Tyler was trying to tell us what was happening but it wasn't to easy because the people were talking in spanish. My classmates went on the internet and went to the cnn website and found out what was really happening. My teacher and my classmates were watching tv while it was all happning. At one point the principal came in and told us to turn the tv off because we shouldn't have to see what was happening. When he left the teacher turned it back on not caring what he said, she wanted to know what was going on. Some people kids looked like they were going to cry. When we told our next period teacher about it, her jaw drooped She was really upset. The rst of that day everyone walked around really upset and worried about whether something was going to happen nearby, since we lived right next to Chicago. Alot of parents took out their kids from school incase of bomb threats or just to have them safe at home.My mom took me out in 5th peroid, and the next day when I asked my teachers to give me the work I missed they said not to worry about they wont count it. It took a few days to get back to the usual routine at school. Everyone was still worried that the Sears Tower was next, but I knew that would not happen because the government would not let that happen. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The thing that stands out the most to me about September 11, 2001 was the weather. It was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky. It seemed like such a great day to be alive and enjoying the late summer climate. At least that was what was going through my mind as I drove the 13 miles to my workplace for 8:00 AM. I was also reviewing the day's schedule-In at 8:00 AM, out at 3:45 PM, on to pick up my then five year old son from extended day care at school, and then proceed to my local precinct to cast my votes for my city's primary election. Little did I know what was to come. The day started out ordinary enough. I am a claims representative for a national insurance company, and I was logged into the phones, computer powered up, ready to take reports and handle my caseload of auto, homeowners and injury claim files. Just another day.... I believe I was paying an automobile appraisal when Kathy, my team leader, looked up from her phone call and said, "Oh my God. A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center!" Everyone around me looked up, stunned. We all began logging into whatever Internet newspaper sites we could access-I remember USAToday.com was a popular one-to get any information we could. The info superhighway was expectedly jammed! As we were attempting to get more news, Kathy said "My god, they hit the other tower with another plane!" That's when it hit me that this was not just a random crash; this was a planned event. TERRORISM, I thought. A shiver went up my spine. When I heard the plane went into the Pentagon, and then discovered on Washingtonpost.com that another plane went down in PA, I thought, "My God, has the world gone crazy? What is this world coming to?" I called my mom at work and she was in shock. She and her co-workers saw the second WTC plane crash on live TV. I then called my husband, who was scheduled to work at 2:30, and he had no clue about the tragedy! He was napping on the couch and didn't have the TV on. Naturally, he was shocked when I filled him in and immediately put on the news to get the updates. All through work I had one thought. I had to get to my son and hug him and make sure he was safe. You see, he just started kindergarten and this was his first full week of school. So I was pretty useless at work that day. I couldn't wait until 3:45. I high-tailed it out of work and practically flew to his school. After picking my son up from school, I remembered I had to vote. We went to the precinct which is, appropriately for September 11, an Assembly of God church. After voting, my son and I retreated to the church and prayed. The tears rolled down my face as I prayed that justice would be served swiftly to the masterminds of this evildoing. I went straight home and watched the news for a couple of hours, trying to make sense of all this madness. My son knew that some bad people had crashed planes into some big towers in NYC, but that was about all he could comprehend. However, within days he was able to identify bin Laden, and could recite the names of countries such as Afghanistan and Uzbekistan. I equate the war on terrorism for my son to the Vietnam War for me in the late 60's/early 70's-as a child I knew things were happening that hurt people, but it was in a far-away place and it seemed to last forever. It seemed so remote. I can't believe how I can recall this with such clarity. Now I know how my parents felt when asked where they were when JFK was assassinated. I am ashamed to say that my first thought was, "How stupid do you have to be to crash into a HUGE building." Then I heard of a second plane crashing into the other tower; suddenly I was filled with a sense of urgency, not for the people in NY but for my loved ones. When the news reporter spoke of people jumping off buildings, I cried. Not sobs but just small tears streaming down my face; it was surprising to me that I was feeling so strongly about strangers I had never met. I see the news often and have seen real people dead or dying all the time. My attitude was, "Hey! It's life!" but this wasn't life; someone had so much hate for us that they would kill innocent people. I felt hate towards these people they had inflicted fear in me; a fear that was shielded by the American attitude, "We are invincible." Then, I along with many others went to the nearest hospital to donate blood. We contributed to the September 11th funds; and flew our flags proudly. Our tragedy has united a nation of strangers in a way I never heard about in history. It was a day that we cried along with people we never met and contributed to our cause. A day we saw our nation fall from grace and its people rise from its ashes. I will always remember Sept. 11th as the day my faith in humanity was born. He graduated high school in June, 2003, left for and graduated boot camp all before he was 18 yrs. old. He just wants to protect this great country. I am lucky that he is stationed state side (for now). I feel as though this has impacted me in a way that you don't realize it does. The Giants had played the Broncos the night before, and my cousins and me went out and watched the game at a bar. I work at Dow Jones, on the newswire, in an office in Jersey City, N.J., that is directly across the Hudson River from the twins towers. I was hoarse, and tired, and two editors were on vacation; it was just me and Sharon. I don't know what time the phone rang, it was my sister, who also lives in Jersey City, down on the waterfront. "Go to the window," she said. "Jeanne-Michele, I got work to do, what? Why?" "Because the Trade Center's on fire!" she yelled. She had heard the first plane strike, then ran to her back window. She watched everything from there. I went over to the window, and saw the smoke coming from the first tower. A bunch of us were standing there, looking out. I don't remember exactly what it was, but I made some joke about the idiot who couldn't fly a plane. I remember at the time thinking it was pretty clever. I was back at my desk when the second plane hit. It was weird, my friend Sam was over, and we were watching it on TV, even though we could look across the river. There was one girl standing by the window, and she screamed so loud the whole newsroom heard it because she saw the second plane coming, and Sam and I saw the explosion on TV and heard it from outside. I can't explain how surreal that was. People started screaming; we all knew then what was really going on. I remember hearing somebody screaming Oh, my God, Oh, my God; strangely enough, a friend told me the other day that he heard me screaming that. I'm sure a lot of us were. We tried to keep working, but it was madness, people were genuinely terrified, and the newsroom was totally chaotic. We stuck around for a while, filing headlines to the wire, trying to write whatever we could. Months later, Sharon said she heard from a reporter at the New York Times that Dow Jones had printed the first headlines on the attack. Sharon said, God, I wonder who took the headlines? I said to her, you did. Our boss, Paul Ingrassia, was on the ground, saw the plane hit, and phoned in headlines on his cellphone. Sharon had totally forgotten it. She broke the news to the world. There was a headline on my screen, "One Tower collapses," or something like that. I remember changing it to "One of Two Twin Towers Collapses." For some bizarre reason I felt it necessary to point out that there were two towers; totally redundant. I hit the button on that headline, and then my bosses came through the newsroom, yelling "get out, go, get out, leave everything, go, get out of your seat and go." When that first tower collapsed, we could see it and hear it and feel it; it shook my building, across the river. To me it sounded like trees snapping, that building collapsing. Outside was total bedlam. People were running in every direction; nobody knew if more planes were up there. The police were screaming at people to walk away from the river. "Just go," they said, "go that way." and they'd point inland. I ran around the block, to a street that ended at the river, right across from the Trade Center, a view I'd never, ever gotten tired of. Every day I saw those buildings and that skyline, and every day it just amazed me. I used to think of those buildings as modern Pyramids, and it always seemed to me that the whole financial center, with its glass atrium, was like the entranceway to the modern Rome, to the new world capital. I guess I wasn't the only one who felt that way. I snuck into Liberty State Park after we left the office. It's a large open field on the river right behing Ellis Island and the Statue of Libery. As I was walking in, there was a constant stream of people covered in soot walking out; people were evacuated to the park. All sorts of emergency crews were coming screaming in. The park has this great view of the city and of course the statue and all that. A lot of pictures you see with the skyline and the statue are taken there. And what we saw that day, all day, and for the next two weeks or so, was the city in smoke. I just couldn't get over how it wouldn't stop burning. So anyhow I started going up to anybody in a uniform and asking if I could do anything. I was told no a few times. They were still bringing people over from the city. This one boat landed at the pier and these people rushed by me with a stretcher and on the stretcher was a fireman, burned badly and not moving. Not an inch. And I remember I looked at his hand, laid across his stomach, and I don't want this at all to sound callous, but it looked like a slab of meat, dead the way a slab of meat looks. Somebody was screaming into a walkie-talkie for I can't remember what, so I think maybe he wasn't dead but I don't know and I never found out. There was another fireman behind him, and he came off the boat and he was kicking the rail, furious, yelling in just pain and frustration. So finally I said to somebody, look, I'm an American, I want to do something. I told him I'd do anything, anything. They let me stay for five or six hours, there were about eight of us that were in the park, civilians, while they set up a triage for the victims they thought they were going to get. I lugged ice and cots and first aid kits and blankets and got firemen and EMTs drinks and I can't remember what else I did, and the whole time we had this view, this spectacular view, I mean people come from all over the world for this view. I'm in the park all the time and I hear different languages constantly. And we just watched it burn. The smoke had to be as high as the towers were. It wouldn't stop burning, and the smoke trailed south as far as we could see. Finally they kicked us out, they said look thanks but we don't know who you are and they're gonna start bringing people over here and it's going to be bad. So we left. But they never brought anybody over to the park. I guess the New York hospitals never got to overflowing. Everybody either got out or died. So for a few days people were dropping supplies off in Jersey City and they'd get ferried them across the river. I was down at the waterfront, loading boats, and also storing supplies in the warehouses. I mean we got eighteen-wheeler after eighteen-wheeler, trucks from all over the country. We couldn't store it all. And there were tons of people around, from all over the state, there was a father who brought his daughter along, there was a marine, there was me, there was tons of people and everybody worked hard and didn't complain about a damn thing and worked until they had to tell us to go home. I was never prouder in my life to be an American than then. I woke up for work the next morning, we went back the next day, and at first I didn't remember it. I swear I didn't, I was only half-awake and for a minute I forgot about the whole thing. Then I heard the radio, and they were talking about it, and I remembered everything, and I curled up into a ball in my bed and screamed and howled and cried uncontrollably for I don't know how long. What strikes me the most now is the futility of it all. Did those guys do what they thought they were going to do? Did they achieve any goals? Never in a million years did I suspect that it was a terrorist attach. I arrived at work and announced what I had heard, tears in my eyes, my hands shaking and unable to get the mental picture out of my head. We ran around looking for a televsion to watch, we tried to logon to the news on the Internet, but unable to connect due mast volumes of others trying to do the same around the country. We work at a Outpatient Substance clinic the counselor's all had clients, do we interupt to tell them, do we maintain our professionalism, do we openly mourn? We found comfort in each other and huddled together unsure of what was next for the world. Trying to cope with the visions seen on televisions and listening to the words that were so sureal. Are we at war? Our hearts were breaking as many of us openly weeped for the families and lost lives. I called home to talked to my husband and tell him of what was going on and how scared I was.He turned on the television and watched,captivated by the events,unable to turn it off, as so many others have conveyed. felt the incredible urge to call up my family located in California, Hawaii, Arizona, and of course right here in town, I wanted to make sure everyone was alright and to tell them in my own way, that I loved them. I still get teary eyed when the mention of 9/11 comes up. I have often wondered if the the rest of the country felt as strongly as we do. I now know they do, we traveled to California this summer and visited with family who had lived on Long Island until 9 years ago. There friends and everyone we talked with seem to bring it up when they found out we were from New York. They feels the affects, everyone knew someone who knew someone or was related to someone. What wide spread destruction this act of terrorism took on. We can not tolerate this and must stand united. Some of our patients came into the office and told us that three planes had been hijacked and one was crashed into the Pentagon and the other two into the World Trade Centers. As I stood there listing to the story, another plane had been crashed into Pennsylvania. As a medical professional I wanted to go and do whatever I could. I thought it was weird sitting in class learning about history and experiencing it at the same time. Right before the end of the period my teacher turned on the news. This was around 9:34. The bell rang at 9:41 and I proceeded to study hall. Through out the whole day I watched the terrible sites over and over. When I got home my mom asked me if I heard what had happened and then went to work. My little sister got home at four and she was very scared. I must have been zoned out or something because I didn?t hear the sonic boom that my sister heard. Since we live near Wright Patterson Air Force Base airplanes were taking off, two of witch made sonic booms. My sister came running saying someone was bombing us and thing of the sort. Tell us your story: A Day We Will Never Forget September 11 2001 was a day that no one will soon forget, as its one year anniversary draws nearer the horrific memories of that tragic day are drugged from the back of every ones minds. I?m getting ahead of myself. I should start at the beginning. As pain full as these memories are they should never be forgotten, as history tends to repeat itself. It started off as a day like any other. People allover the U.S. got up, got dressed and went to work or school. I was among those people. School started of the same as any other day, but by what I'm almost positive was second period it was changed that?s when heard the news of what had happened. She had told me with a blank look, "A plane had hit the word trade center buildings. I don?t remember much else about that conversation except that the fact hadn?t sunk in and I had convinced my self that it must have been a small privet plane that had gotten through off corse and left it as nothing more then that. There was a sort of tension around school roomers that a jet liner had hit the building and that it was an act of terrorism but never for a second did I believe that any of this might be true. It wasn?t until fifth period that I found out the truth. The TV kept replaying the footage of the 1st plane hit, it had been a jetliner, and then another one had hit. Then I began to see people jump from hundreds of feet in the air I was astonished at the sight, how horrible it must have been that people thought the only rational thing to do was to jump to there deaths. When the building fell so did the hopes and dreams of a nation. The aftermath was both good and bad. The country united in the tragedy. People gave thanks to the fact that there were a few survivors, but mean while thousands among thousands of life?s were lost and changed. Flags started appearing on every house and even on cars. There was millions of dollars was donated to the families of the victims and to the victims themselves. I was fortunet that I did not directly no any of the victims, but I did no people who did. People who will never be able to visit a grave and no that the body of there loved one was there. Thousands of people will never in there life have closure. A very close friend of mine when out and joined the army after the fact, and I have never seen him since. I no that if September 11th would have been a day like any other he would still be here. So you can see that September 11th had sum sort of effect on all of us even we don?t know it, because someone we knows life was changed. I hope that we will never forget what happened because I never want anyone to have to suffer as thousands have.
