Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband, George, and I had flown out to Las Vegas for a week's vacation on the Sunday before September 11. We had just woke up and turned on the TV when the announcement was made that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Neither of us could believe what we were hearing and seeing on the screen. When the 2nd plane hit, I thought war had been declared on the USA. My thoughts turned to my family at home and I feared that I would enver see them again to be able to tell them one last time that I loved them. We were glued to the TV that morning but when we finally went to eat breakfast, we noted how the casinos were still going full force as if nothing had happened. It really made me sad to think that this terrible disaster meant so little to some people. As the week wore on and all transportation was halted, we were again concerned that we would not get home. Fortunately, by Sunday we were able to get our flight out and get home to family and friends. I don't think Louisville, Kentucky had ever looked so good to either of us before. I know what happened has made me take more time to give thanks for our Country and our liberties and freedom. This was certainly a wake up call for everyone. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I listened to the attacks on the radio in my office in total disbelief. I wasn't sure how to react because it seemed so unreal. How could we be attacked in such magnitude? Who had done this thing? I went into the cafeteria and sat with my co-workers in front of a tv - still dry-eyed, unable to process the situation. We were dismissed from work early that day. I called my husband and picked up my son, who had turned 1 1/2 one month before. All I could think about was hugging him close to me and never letting go. What kind of future had I given my child? Were there going to be more attacks? Was I prepared for them? How would I protect my son? My husband was told to continue working that day, so he could not come home and be with us. I took my son to see my mother. I remember a lot of my family from south Texas calling me because I work and live near DFW airport and they were concerned for my safety. I also remember that my husband's mother and stepdad were up in Kansas City that week taking a class. They had chosen to drive to Kansas City instead of flying (totally unusual for them). They ended up being able to drive back while the people who flew were stuck for a long time, as flights had to be rescheduled, etc. I have learned to appreciate my family and the time I have with them much more. If the attack had been here, they might not have known how much that they mean to me everyday. It is just this year, on the day of rememberance, that I have cried and grieved. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on my way to Algebra class when a friend grabbed me in the hall and told me that the Pentagon had been bombed. I shook my head and said "no way, that's a rumour". I really thought that there was no way the Pentagon, of all places, could be attacked. But when I walked into Algebra, my teacher had the TV on, and I saw the towers billowing smoke and flaming. I was in complete shock. I mean, I'd been raised very well aware of what the real world was like, so I understood the reality of it, but it was still just absolutely horrifying to realize that at the very moment I was sitting there, people were dieing, and had been for two hours(It was 10 AM EDT, 9 AM CST). By that time, I was in tears, holding myself to keep from sobbing. I remember seeing the TV flash to the Pentagon, and that's when it really hit me, I think, that America really wasn't as safe as we all thought it was. Then of course, it went back to the towers, and it hit me that I have two very close friends who live near the World Trade Center. My thoughts immediately went to them, praying that they weren't there, and wishing that no one else had been either. Unfortunately, wishes are just that. And thousands of people were there. Thankfully, my friends weren't. They watched the towers collapse from across the street, though. I began taking notes the rest of the day of news casts and things people said. I guess I wanted to go back and read it later, since it was all so much to absorb at the time. I mean, like every other school in America, we didn't do anything in class that day, we just watched the news. So there was plenty to write down. Most of us thought we were going to war, or that World War 3 was hitting, or the Apocolypse. Everyone was losing their minds. Out of all of my friends, I was the most calm, and that's saying something. They were all yelling and panicking, and not really thinking about the situation, so much as just letting their worst fears get the better of them. And I did that too, I admit. I was terrified that we'd go to war, or the draft would be re-instated and all of my male friends would have to go to war. It was a terrible day, but I think what helped me keep from totally breaking down was crying. Letting myself mourn for those who'd been lost and those who were losing those they loved helped a lot. While it hurt like hell to think of it, and it still does, if I'd bottled it up, I'd have lost my mind. Anyone who sees that would lose it. Anyone who saw those towers, heard the stories and the screams, would have lost it. And I don't blame them in the least. One thing it did, if only for a short time, was bind America together. Every person in America was bound together. Black, White, Democrat, Republican, Gay, Straight, Pagan, Christian, it didn't matter. It didn't matter who you were, you were an American. And for awhile, we actually appreciated the value of eachother. Unfortunately, that dwindled and eventually died out, but there are a few people I know who still are that way because 9-11 changed something in them forever. I know it did in me. I think that was the day I really grew up and started caring about what was going on around me in a new way. I'd always cared, and always had tried to pay attention, but now I had a reason to. Now it was almost like I felt I owed it to those people to do everything I could to honor them. Hopefully telling this story, is one more way of honoring them. In disbelief, we all immediately turned our television on to CNN and yelled for the Doctor's to come see, as we thought we were watching a re-play when in fact it was the second plane striking the WTC! The office stood in horror, we were shocked, didn't know what to think. I remember the look on everyone's face when they announced it was 2 planes that hit, the tears that began to flow. How my body went numb, and suddenly I felt so lifeless, empty. I was so shaken by the turn of event's I couldn't function at work, and went home to get my kids and be with my family. I first called my Mom to see if she had gotten in touch with her brother who lives in NY, (amongst all our other family that lives there) and she couldn't get through on the phone lines, all circuits were busy. I finally got through briefly on my cell phone and was able to do a 3-way call so my Mom could talk to her brother, and all we did was cry on the phone. My Grandfather was in WWI, my Father was in WWII, and my Brother was in Vietnam. I have heard war stories all my life, but nothing could ever prepare me for what "9/11" was going to do to me and the world! For the first time in my 35 years of life, my freedom was threaten on that day, a feeling I never want to feel again, for me or any other american. In class we were starting our math while the other three students were going up to there the other math class. We were starting on the multiplication test when Ms. Jackson came over the PA System. " Students and Staff....we have just been aware that there has been a terrorists attack in New York and here at Washington D.C." At that moment I was worried about my grandparents. Since their house is near Washington D.C. I was also worried about my aunt and my cousins. They lived a couple of miles from the Pentagon. Ms. Jackson continued. "We will keep you posted with the tragic event." Then she was gone. We were released a couple of minutes earlier then usual. I was almost in tears when I saw my grandparents alive and well. MY sisters came home a while later. My sisters were saying how they were able to see the smoke and feel their school shake alittle. I felt sorry for them. Often whatever is on the radio will work its way into my dreams before I wake up. As I slept the first plane hit the tower. I dreamt of fire as the "breaking news" music started playing and the first reports started coming in. Soon my subconscious realized something important was going on in the real world and I woke up. The radio was saying only that thick smoke was coming from one of the towers and that there were reports a plane had hit it. I got out of bed and turned on the television to gape. The voices of Katie Couric and Matt Lauer were talking with a woman who had seen the plane hit, while live footage of the burning tower played on the screen. The woman was saying the plane had been large, like a jetliner. I thought Katie and Matt sounded doubtful. I was doubtful myself, but then I saw the hole in the side of the tower and realized it was unlikely a small plane could have made that. Then suddenly the camera jerked, a shadow on the screen, and then a silent explosion. Fire and smoke and shiny confetti floating down. The woman on the phone began screaming: "Oh my God! Did you see that? Did you see that?" I heard Katie say "Yes we saw it." I heard the change in Katie's and Matt's voices as, like the rest of us, they tried to grasp what they were seeing. I heard that sound in all the announcers' voices over and over on all the channels on all the televison I watched that day. Like millions of others, I realized this was no accident. I watched the two towers burning for a while. I started to make some sense of what was happening. There had been a terrorist attack in New York. I had seen part of it on live TV. They were going to have a hell of a time getting the fires out and it was going to be a black day. At this point I was going to be late for work. I didn't plan to stay home all day and watch the towers burn so I called the reference desk at the library where I worked and told them I was going to be late. They hadn't heard about the second tower yet. Then I jumped in the shower. I lived a little over a mile from the Pentagon. I had the bathroom window open that morning. I heard a jet flying over, low and close. Must be military jets, I thought to myself. Then I heard a muffled explosion and no more jet sound. I nearly dropped the soap. Another plane crashing. But it couldn't be. Yet almost immediately I began hearing sirens. Still I refused to believe it, even as I rushed to get out of the shower. I still had the television on, but now it was a local newsperson saying there were reports of fire and a bomb at the Pentagon. Now I was the one saying "Oh my God, oh my God," over and over. It wasn't a bomb. It was a plane. I had heard it. I was looking up the phone number for the news station when the phone rang. It was a friend who lived nearby. "What the f**k!?" he said. "It was a plane. I heard it crash," I said. I don't remember what else we said. I don't think either one of us could really hear what the other was saying. After a couple of minutes I told him I was going to call the TV station. "It wasn't a bomb. It was a plane." I said to the woman who answered the phone. "We know." she said and hung up. Now the television was saying there had been a plane crash. I called my parents to tell them I was okay. At this point I was unsure what to do next. Feeling it was probably not a good idea, I went outside. It was a beautiful early fall morning. The sky was a bright blue. There were sirens. But beyond that there was the feeling someting was off its track, like a bearing was loose somewhere grinding away. It must have been the adrenaline. I looked in the direction of the Pentagon. Behind the trees there was something low on the horizon. It could have been smoke or it could have been a cloud. There was no plume of black smoke rising into the sky as I had expected. Then I started walking towards the major road near my apartment which ran down a hill to the Pentagon. As I walked I kept looking towards the Pentagon. Finally I could see low on the horizon what was clearly not a cloud. Smoke. But it was white and gray, not black. Was that good? A man pulled up in a pickup truck and and stopped. "There's a big fire down at the Pentagon," he said as though he were talking about the local lumber mill. I nodded and pointed towards the smoke. I kept walking. A man approached with a handheld radio. "One of the towers just fell," he said. I nodded and kept walking. I no longer cared about New York. What was going on? How many more planes were there? What if there were a nuclear bomb, or a chemical bomb? Was I going to see the end of today? Should I be trying to get out of town, to save myself? Why was I walking towards the Pentagon? Then I saw a couple loading belongings into an SUV. They were heading for the hills. I stood at the road and looked down the hill towards the Pentagon. In the distance I could see it, smoke billowing off of it. It was 10am, but cars were streaming up the road, heading away from the city. There were people walking as well, many in uniform, away from the Pentagon. I though it looked frighteningly like an exodus. I stood staring for a few minutes. People were talking into cell phones, their voices high with anxiety. I remember making eye contact with the people on the street, much more so than is usual in the city, seeing my fear reflected in their eyes. I crossed the street, took a few steps towards the Pentagon, then stopped. What was I doing? There was no point in my walking towards the fire. I turned and began walking back. On the way I passed a military office building. Cars were streaming out of the parking lot. Buildings all over the city were being evacuated. There were a lot of military and government buildings in my neighborhood, and after I returned home and decided to try to drive to work I found myself caught in a traffic jam of people trying to get home. At first I thought I was seeing the beginnings of gridlock and panic, but once I was away from my neighborhood the traffic lessened and I made it to work easily. At work I called another friend whose voice I wanted to hear, but got only her answering machine. I left a message. "If you're at home, stay there," I said. At the library we gathered at the reference desk watching a handheld televsion someone had brought. We kept a list of the latest developments, but no one called the library to ask what was going on. A large television was set up in a meeting room and people gathered throughout the day to watch the news. Finally, at five the library closed early. I got ahold of the friend I had trield to call earlier and drove over empty streets to her house. Perhaps my only good memory of that day was seeing her face as she opened the door. I hugged her tight. She had slept the whole morning, finally awakened by a phone call from her mother telling her what had happened. We watched the television with a couple of friends of hers. After a couple hours I went and hung out with some other friends. We all wanted to see familiar faces, use them to help put in context what had happened. We watched more television. By now the TV coverage had become another aspect of the events of the day. What was the most remarkable piece of film we had seen? When it came on I pointed out footage a woman shot in New York of the debri cloud coming towards her. At the last moment a shopkeeper pulls her inside and locks the door. As the woman points her camera at the glass storefront the debri cloud rolls by like a tidal wave. The street scene disappears. As the woman screams all you see is a grey-brown roiling mass going past the glass storefront. It looked like the store was inside the twister from the Wizard of Oz. Another piece of footage I saw only once. It was the President at the school he was visiting when the planes hit. He's sitting on the stage when an aide comes up and whispers in his ear, persumably telling him about the 2nd tower being hit. The expressions that passed across his face were unforgettable. He looked like someone had punched him in the stomach as he fought to keep his composure. I never saw that footage again. Perhaps it showed him in too "unpresidential" a light. As I watched the footage of the Pentagon again and again I realized I knew the spot where the plane had hit. I jogged regularly on a path within a hundred feet of the building. On the television I watched a scene of chaos where I had run countless times. I watched a fire truck burn that I run past often as it sat parked by the heliport. A week later I found that truck. It had been towed to a far corner of a parking lot with a couple other burned cars and some debri. The truck was half burnt, and I could smell the jet fuel. Two months later I stood under the stars on a cold November night, gathered close with friends, sipping warm scrumpie heated on the backyard barbecue. We looked up at the night sky, pointing out the fighter jets high overhead, talking about how the world had changed, wondering if it was going to be a long winter. Even though I tried to work,most work stopped after a few minutes and I discussed the horror with my co-workers. I had friends and family in New York City and cried as the towers fell. In the following weeks,we had a prayer circle in the building parking lot where we prayed and sang songs. We had a yard sale to raise money for the American Red Cross at the Bonham Building(named for an employee killed in the line of duty). My daughter and I volunteered for the American Red Cross. We helped pass out candles at a service the American Red Cross held at Tom Brown Park. The church we attended at that time was packed the next Sunday(First Baptist Of Lloyd). An American flag has flown continuously in our yard since 9/11/2001. I remember my husband,Doug and my daughter,Melanie sitting in bed with me watching television that night. My daughter and I kept singing "I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free." Melanie has since said it was her generation's Pearl Harbor or Vietnam. I feel that growing up in Gettysburg,PA I've always valued my freedom and this attack reinforced that for me. He told me a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. I am originally from New Jersey, so New York City is very familiar to me. I turned the TV on, and didn't turn it off for days. My children drew pictures of the towers in flames for about 2 weeks. They were 4 and 6 at the time. Now I read more about world events in the newspaper that I used to skip over. Tell us your story: on september 11,2001 i was just getting home from bringing my kids to school and i switched on the tv. what i saw horrified me. i wanted to go straight back to school and get my children so they could be safe at home with me. since we live near a major port i was concearned about our saftey. my husband works offshore on an oilrig ,in the gulf of mexico, and i was afraid he was in danger. when he finally called to let me know he was ok, i was relieved.but he was stuck out there. no helicopters or boats were allowed to go in or out.as i sat and watched the news all day and heard the reports of everything going on my fear grew.when i went to get my kids from school i learned that they also watched the news all day. i have a 6 yr. old, a 9 yr old and a 16 yr. old.they were all terrified that we were going to be bombed.thats when i realized the pure evil of the situation. my children will never forget this and neither will i.i am happy to say that i have seen more patriotism in the last year since this tradgedy took place and that americans as well as other nationalities have united and stood together. the terrorist may have hurt us but they will not come between us. we will not be defeated. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On september 11, I woke up late for work and was in a huge rush. I quickly got myself organized and headed to my vehicle. Every morning while driving I listen to Bubba the Love Sponge, a local radio disc jockey. Usually when I turn it Bubba and his buddies are usually talking to a guest stripper or acting goofy in someway. This time they were talking about some plane crashing, which i didn't really give much serious attention too. Then, they said the plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. The first thoughts in my head were, "Wow thats crazy!". I thought there was just some mechanical problem with the plane and for some unlucky reason it crashed into the world Trade Center. It wasn't about two minutes later, that Bubba and his disc jockey crew began yelling, "Oh my God! Oh my God! Another plane has hit the World Trade Center". I was totally speechless, my mouth was numb and my goose bumps flared with shock. I parked my car, unbuckled my seatbealt and sat for a minute to regroup myself. I entered work and saw my boss' face wrapped around the small black and white televison. He looked at me and said, "They think it is an act of terrorism". I nodded and said, "Yeah it has to be, two planes just do not crash into the Twin Towers". My boss was very worried, because his brother lives a couple blocks down from the World Trade center. He had been trying to call his brother for a couple hours and could not reach him. He finally reached him and his brother said he saw from the roof of his apartment building the falling of the second tower. He had just finished crying when my boss called. The whole day at work we watched and waited for more information. Customers came in saddened and disguisted, they gave their opinions on who they thought were to be responsible and how they were going to pay for their terrorist acts. After the shock wore off, I began to think of what was going to happen to my country. I asked myself what actions are we going to take against these villians and what freedoms would I loose. I went home from work that day and watched the news until one o' clock in the morning. Almost every station had some kind of news on about the tragedy. I have watched ESPN since I was in elementary school and never before have they shown news rather than sporting news. I went to bed that night and thanked god that no one close to me was in the tragedy. I also sent my blessings to those who lost people close to them. One thing good about the Sepetember 11, tragedy, was how our country came together waving flags, wearing red, white, and blue, and the great efforts to help New York City families and repair on the city. There have been comercials, songs, and television shows dedicated to the tragedy. I think everyone learned a lot from September 11, and our country has become stronger. Tell us your story: I lived on Governor's Island, NY during the time that the Trade Towers were being built giving me the most envious view of them from my bedroom window. I was devastated as we watched the TV just minutes after the first coverage began. At noon, we went to Home Depot and bought white flowers and one large red flower and planted a memorial flower garden that afternoon. In response to September 11, I created 3 large panel mosaic large with granite, marble and mirrors. My problem is that the pieces are so heavy that the original frame is bowing. I would like to rebuild the frames with steel instead of wood. I am interested in finding out if there is any salvaged steel from the site available for artists? Tell us your story: I thought that the most defining historical moment in my life would be Nixon?s declaring the War in Vietnam was over or the flight to Chicago when we heard that Challenger had exploded. I had hoped that Challenger or the Gulf War would have been the historical world event that my children would remember since they were young then and the impact was not so great. It was a beautiful morning a year ago, the sky was blue, a gentle breeze with warm temperatures, a perfect Tuesday morning to walk to work. My oldest was to graduate from trade school on the coming Sunday, my daughter was thrilled with the start of her last year in high school, and my youngest was looking forward to playing football. In a matter of minutes, our lives changed. I saw my co-worker leaving the office and walk toward the local bar as I crossed the street. He spotted me and shouted ?Come on, a plane has hit the World Trade Center.? Over the next several minutes, we watch the flames and discussed how such an accident could have happened. More people kept coming in to watch the newscasts. We all sat in disbelief as the second plane struck. Questions about who, why, how could they. Discussions about going to war, what this will do our life style, will they attack here? We though that it was over, they had mostly failed, the towers were still standing. Anger over the needless loss of innocent lives but the towers stood and many will be saved. Gasps and screams as the first tower fell, absolute silence as the second collapsed. Some went home, some went back to their jobs, everyone had TVs and radios on, it was a day in limbo. It has effected all of us emotionally and to a lesser extent personally. Five days after 9-11, my son graduated as a certified aviation mechanic. First one job and then another cut back as civil (private) aviation dropped to almost nothing. He tried to get a job with a larger company that wanted to hire him before 9-11, but there are now hiring freezes and people with years of experience also looking for jobs. He is now using his mechanic skills in another field but is not happy that he cannot work on airplanes. He is lucky as many of his classmates are at minimum wage while trying to pay back large school loans. Our daughter changed her plans for traveling this summer. She still flew but not the major trip she had planned. My youngest wonders what his class trip to Washington will be like this year. Even at work we look at travel differently as well as if what we build could become terrorist targets. My apologies but I will not try and forget 9-11. I will try to forgive those who did it but forgiveness does not mean they are not to be held accountable and punished for their actions. We are Americans, we have the courage and the strength to survive and prosper. We should not forget nor allow the world to forget what happened on 9-11. As the Japanese Admiral Yamoto said after the attack on Peril Harbor. ?I fear that all we had done is to awaken a sleeping giant.? It is time again for the giant to awake and say this will not be tolerated in the world. My hope and prayers to everyone who has lost someone close to them due to 9-11. May you find courage, relief, and comfort and may none of us ever have to experience another 9-11. My flight to Osaka was Monday, September 10, 2001, with a short overnight layover and then return home on September 12th. But on September 11th, the crew awoke in the middle of the night to hear our nation was under attack. Our first reaction was shock and unbelief. We were glued to the TV for any tidbit of information that was new. We sought out our fellow crew members to find comfort and share our tears, and we prayed. As airline crew, we are in a unique job. No one understands our life style like another crew member, so we gravitated toward each other. United, FEDEX, KLM, it did not matter, we were the same. We pictured ourselves in those hijacked planes and wondered how the crew felt and responded to what was happening to them. We cried to see those airplanes crash and to know our flight attendant brothers and sisters were in those planes. We sat in Osaka day after day waiting for the news we longed to hear, that we could go home. We felt like there had been a death in the family, and we could not get back. Finally, on Friday we got the message that we would fly home on Saturday. Home...is there a better word to describe the place of comfort, love and safety. But would we ever be totally safe again? Would our skies ever seem completely safe? Would our jobs ever be free of the threat of terrorists? Would our country ever be as naive or secure as it once was? As I sat in my kitchen, doing my normal daily chores, the phone rang. Instead of answering it, I let the machine get it, not wanting to have to stop doing the every day mundane chores that I always do. And I will never, ever forget the words I heard coming out of my friend, Lanette Daniel's, mouth. "DD", she said,"Are you up? DD, wake up!" (I am in a band and known to sleep in in the mornings.)"They've hit the World Trade Center, the terrorists, they hit it with a jet! WAKE UP!!!" I sat down fast, feeling my knees go weak under me, knowing this was not some sick joke or a prank. This was our country, being attacked. I reached over and picked up the phone to the sound of one of my oldest friends crying, telling me to turn on the TV. And so I did, to one of the most horrific sights I will ever see. The first thing, the very first thing I saw on the TV was the second plane crashing into the second building. I will never be able to get over the shock of it, watching, LIVE, as this plane dives into that tower, knowing we are under siege, knowing there are thousands, THOUSANDS, of people scared, hurt and dieing, right before my eyes. People on those planes that are scared to death, just wanting to see and hold their loved ones again, knowing they never will, knowing they are dieing today. The next thing I will never be able to forget are the people jumping, jumping to their death from the torn tower, to escape the furious flames that had them trapped. I still see this almost every day, in my minds eye, these poor, innocent people, loved ones of someone who's probably watching the same horrible scene I am, people having to choose between dieing one way or the other. I had to turn my head, breaking down at the horror of it all, belief sinking in that this was all too real. How could this be, I thought, We Are America, The Home of the Free and the Brave, we are the one that takes in the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning for a better life, a better existence and here we are, being blown to bits just for being Americans. With our own planes, none the less. I could not help but be angry, very angry, at the terrorists, the airlines, the government, everyone. The anger was so strong in me because I could not believe NOONE KNEW, noone had an inkling of what was to happen. There had to be some warning, some tip-off, that let The Powerful know this was a very real threat, even before 9-11-2001. And I was right. There were warnings and noone took them serious, there were definite signs that things were going bad and yet noone took notice. AND THE AIRLINES, where is the security, how could they get on the planes with weapons, how could this be? I wanted my family home, wanting to hold and kiss my child, Ginger, and wanting my husband, Darren, by my side, to see and feel them and not let them go. To hug them and tell them how truly special they are to me, just to be close to both of them, wanting to lay my eyes on them, feeling that, somehow, if we were together we would be safe, and if anything were to happen to us, at least we would be together. I still have that feeling every day that they leave, one to go to school and the other to work. I used not to worry if that would be the last time I tell them good-bye, but now I do. I worry about it every day. I am still angry and saddened and probably will always be so, because this should have been a FAILED ATTEMPT by these so called people, these terrorists, these mis-led individuals. The Government had all the warning they needed and should have took it serious. We ARE America, but we ARE NOT invincible, we have weak spots, and we should find and know our weak spots and strengthen them BEFORE something like this happens. I believe in this country and all it stands for, I am devotely American, to my bones, but I am scared, scared for all of us, for our children and their future. In closing, let me say this. I hope my daughter never sees this happen again. She is only 9 but, at the candle light vigil we attended on 9-11-2002 in Springfield, Louisiana at Springfield High Football Field, I saw a sadness in her eyes I have never seen before and I know she is scared. And that angers me even more. My child is scared about her own future, a future that is laid out before her, a future so bright yet so uncertain. I've told her all her life, "You can be anything you want to be." She used to answer "I want to be a singer" or " I want to be a veterinarian". Do you know what she tells me now? My baby tells me........... "Momma, I just want to be safe". And what do I say to that? All I can say is let's pray.... Pray for peace and understanding and tolerance, for those that passed and those they left behind, for every American, for we all were under siege that day, we were all there and we will always remember the day the world stopped turning, the day we held our breath and our loved ones in disbelief, the day we all prayed as one, as Americans, united. When my other teacher to me i burst in tears for my mom and uncle. I tryed calling them but keep on getting a busy signal. I was so white that i was about to faint. My other uncle pick my cousin she was in school with me and people were looking for her. They amost forgot about me. They came back and picked me up. I was at her house and sad and scared she wanted me to eat but i could. So 6 hours later my mom called i knew she and my uncle were ok. i told my mom i loved her very much. I fainted when i saw the twin towers falling down i was like OOOOOOH MY GOD MY MOM AND UNCLE ARE GONE AND DIED FOR OVER. I thought that the was my last time seeing them. My thoughts were of the coming week when I would begin training as am opthalmic assistant in the same office. I was to quit wearing my reception uniform, and start wearing scrubs, and I would get a raise. It was a time in my life that was a very big deal to me. On the morning of September 11th, I was at work sitting at the Check out window. Just after the second plane hit WTC, my office manager came over to me and said that her husband had called her and said that 2 planes had hit the world trade center in New York City. An accident, I thought, and surly my manager was mistaken. What was the chance of 2 planes hitting the WTC. I made her repeat herself 3 times before I actually believed her, and realized that 2 planes hitting WTC was not an accident. President Bush was in our state visiting an elementary school...........in Ft. Meyers, I think............and it was said in the office "get him out of here" because we were afraid it would bring terrorism to our state. The president's brother, Jeb, is our governor. "Get him out of here too" we said. Before the morning was up all of our patients, doctors and employees knew of the incident. No one talked of anything else. No one wanted to work, and no one cared when they were called back into the exam room late. I called a patient back to administer a test. We were in the exam room only half an hour. When we came out, someone said to me that a 3rd plane had hit the Pentagone, and it was said that another was on it's way to the Sears Tower. The thought of the people on the plane flying to their deaths............knowing they were going to die, made me sick. As I filed charts, I couldn't get the idea out of my head. Then the fourth and last plane crashed in Pennsylvania. All flights in the United States were canceled and those which were in the air, were rerouted to the nearest airport. Rumors were flying around about the possibility of other hijacked planes, and it was said that as we spoke they were headed to other national landmarks. My office manager gathered our Eye Care staff together and said that in the event that our town were attacked we were to all go to the optical lab for shelter. Then she said a paryer for the souls of those who had died, and for the safety of those who were in danger, and for those who had lost family and friends on this day. Our office stayed open on September 11th, but many businesses closed in our town. Down Town Tallahssee, where all the government buildings are, was evacuated. We were only a few blocks from down town. Early on in the day Al Quaeda was fingered as suspects. It was said they were 99% it was Bin Laden. When I got home the first thing I did was turn on the TV. My television was old, and on a good day, if I pounded on it I could get a really crappy picture with sound, if I hit it on it's side right with my fist. On that evening, as I turned on the telly, I said to myself, you better work. I gave the television a good hard bang with my fist and got a reception as clear as a brand new television. That was the first time that day that I actually saw with my own eyes what was going on in New York City. I was shocked, and crying, seeing the panic and fear of the people. I was glued to the TV. I forgot to eat, and I forgot to go to bed until very late. By the afternoon all airplanes in the U.S. had been accounted for, and I felt safe from anymore terrorist attacks. I had faith in our government to protect us. That night I saw the President's grim face try and assuage our fears, and assure us that we would bring those respocible for the attack on our country to justice. I had no doubt that we would. Our President was a Texan for God's sake. Everyone knows that Texas is the wrong place to be caught for murder in, so I knew that Al Quaeda would get their's in a very short time. The next day, the topics of conversation were the same. Some folks said why didn't the people on the first 3 flights, that crashed, fight the terrorists the way the ones on the Pennsylvania flight did. I reminded them that in the 80's there were quite a few hijackings, and all that happened was that people sat around until the demads of the terrorist's demands were met. If you did what you were told, for the most part, you surrived. I don't think any American saw the magnitude of these Hijackings to be what they were until after it happened. By the time the Pennsylvania flight was heading to it's death, the people on board knew what their fate was going to be. They knew they were going to die, but they questioned just how they allowed themselvs to go down. They were the first to stand up to the terrorists, and the first casulties in the War On Terror. As the days went on all anyone could talk about was what had happened on September 11th. But things began to go back to business as usual. There were some differences. A few nuts called in bomb threats to some of the government buildings, and the staffs were evacuated. Before Airports opened, if there was a noise that sounded like an airplane, people would stop in their tracks and look up in the sky. Even after flights resumed, I would look up in the sky when a plane passed by, to see if it was flying to fast, or if it was flying straight, or doing a nose dive. It was several weeks before I could see an airplane and not think "terrorist attack" Happily, Wall Street opened up again. And everywhere you looked there were American flags, and signs that said God Bless the U.S.A. Instead of avoiding eye contact, I smiled at strangers on the street. They were afterall my fellow Americans.........regular working stiffs like my self. I felt safe in the hands of my governement, so my main worry was about the racisam against anyone who looked Arobic, that would sprout up. Allthought I did hear a few ignorant remarks from people, for the most part, there was none in my town that I saw. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was suppose to be my day off. I was going to sleep in with my husband. We rarely had any time together and we loved to snuggle. Instead of the dreamy slumber I anticipated, I got a call from my sister, Michelle, at about 8:30 am. She was frantic I turn on the News. She kept telling me the World Trade Center was hit by a plane. I thought she was totally joking, and even said so. But, I heard the urgency in her voice, and the total disbelief. The News confirmed it. I remember waking my husband with the same tone in my voice my sister had when she told me. My husband was sitting in the couch while I paced the room talking with Michelle still on the phone. Michelle was off on a long rambling tangent of information when I notice the smoke looked different for a second. I could not fathom what I was seeing - The building was going to collape. Interupting Michelle, I state the obvious; "Michelle, the building falling down!" I remember saying those words over & over without believing it. "The building fell down." We both go silent in horror. I must say I have an exceptional imagination. It kind of runs in the family. All I could think about was the fireman running up the stairs and the plethera of people trying to escape. It hurts my heart to think about it. It takes so much effort to not to think about all those people; the ones trying to escape down the stairwells, the ones traped above the flames having the face the enevitable, the fireman who knew they were climbing to thier deaths, yet, still they climbed on. It pains me the most when I think about the babies born after 9/11. I just had my first child in June, and I cry for all those who will never know thier daddys; except as a hero of 9/11. A small consolation for an entire lifetime lost. In conclussion to this story, I received a call from my sister, Michelle, at the very same time on the very same day one year later. We will always remember that, though we were not in the same room, or the same city, we spent the day together, watching the most tragic event of our lives. It's now a tragic tradition.
