Hi Roland and Celeste,
I am ok. No warning or anything. We heard someone in
the hall yelling, I thought someone was having a
fight. A lady in the office went to the hallway to
see what was going on. All of sudden she came back
into the office and told us to get out immediately. I
didn't even grab my purse which I am not sure where it
is - either locked in my cubicle or on the floor some
place. When someone says to get out - I move. We got
to the concourse and it was sort of chaotic - people
weren't really sure which way to go. I went with the
crowd through the Metro entrance - but down the stairs
rather than the escalator.
The aircraft crashed near the entrance (main or
North)that faces Rosslyn. Celeste: past where the
govt buses pick us up.
I walked to Crystal City to where I used to work (ILV)
and used their phone to call my boyfriend :- ), my
Mom, and Valerie. I stayed there for awhile and
watched the news.
Needless to say, the traffic was gridlock. But, I am
at John's right now, trying to calm my nerves. This
was deja vu of OKC all over again.
Take care. I'll talk to you both soon.

I was standing in the library with a class of third graders. We were in to our lesson when in walked a third grade teacher. It was not her class I was working with. She said "Would you please turn on a news channel?"
We have an in-house broadcasting system that broadcasts ETV and the cable out to the classrooms. I asked, "What channel?"
She answered, "It doesn't matter?" A cold chill went down my spine. I walked into the av room to the cable box and turned it to a local news channel. We turned on the television in the back room, away from the children and saw the first tower in flames. The teacher had just been on her cell phone with a babysitter who witnessed the first news broadcast.
There were first 3 adults in the backroom. I saw the second plane crash when it happened. I immediately knew this was not a random accident. This meant the United States was no longer the same. In an instant my sense of security was gone. I realized that our country was not ever going to be the same.
All day long every faculty member, every visitor came in and out of the av room. Everyone fought back tears for the sake of the children. All of us expressed the same desire to be at home with our loved ones.
The worst part of the day for me was when a pregnant teacher came into the room and started crying, saying,"There are children who won't be picked up from daycare! What's going to happen to them?"
We all wanted to go home and we weren't dismissed until the normal time.
Driving home I felt spooked. The roads were nearly empty! This is Greenville, South Carolina which has heavy traffic congestion, ordinarily. Downtown was deserted. People had left almost all businesses in the downtown.
I was so angry. I thought about what I could do to help my country. My only thought was drive to the blood bank
and give blood. I had never done so before. It was amazing! I had to park 1/4 mile down the road because of all the cars. All kinds of people were there. The media was there, too. Many organizations donated food and drinks for the hundreds of people lined up on the sidewalks to enter.
That gave me a sense of relief. Americans are stronger, I thought than the forces that wish to destroy us. This feeling was reaffirmed when my father, a World War II veteran later called me with the same message.

Hi Sam and Nina,
Well, it seems we're finally getting a taste of what it's like to live in a
war zone, right here in New York. Thank God we are all safe, and so far, we
don't know of any close relatives or friends who were touched by the World
Trade Center/Pentagon disaster.
How has the news coverage been where you are? It's pretty shocking over
here. I can stand at a bridge near my job and look over the water, and see
the smoking skyline where the World Trade Center used to stand. Billows of
smoke fill the sky as if a sniper simply blew out those two buildings. I
guess that's really what happened.
In some ways, I think it's good for us Americans to be reminded of what many
parts of the rest of the world deal with almost every day. This is an
important wake-up call for us, to remind us to be aware of the rest of the
world, because we are all connected. Perhaps this will make Americans more
conscious of global politics. I wonder if this event will breed a whole new
generation of political science students.
We still don't know who's responsible for this, but I hope that we Americans
don't become hateful toward whatever ethnic group the terrorists belonged
to; after all, they were terrorists, not necessarily representative of the
views of their fellow countrymen. I suppose only time will tell.
It's a little slow and quiet here at the office; it was hard to get to work,
and a lot of roads are closed. Whenever we hear planes, we tend to get
scared because there are no commercial jets flying right now, so we know
that the jets we hear must be military. We only hope that they are friendly
planes, not foreign.
I was supposed to fly to Chicago on Friday, but now, my mom wants me to
cancel. I don't think it'll be unsafe, but if nothing else, there will be a
very long wait at the airport. I suppose she's right: don't fly immediately
after a national air disaster.
On my way to work, there was a lot of debris on the highway. I think it was
ash and detritus carried back by police and rescue vehicles that had been at
the scene of the disaster; it must have fallen off the cars.
How are you?

September 11 Email

My name is Richard Pecorella and my fiancée/domestic partner Karen Juday was murdered in the WTC terrorist attack. She worked for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 101st floor. Karen and I met at an Indy car race in Nazareth Pa. on April 26th, 1997. It was a one in a million shot that we met. She was visiting her brother who is a racecar team member and I was going to my first race. I was in the middle of finalizing my divorce of a marriage of 24 years. Karen was visiting from Elkhart, Indiana. We were sitting next to each other in the stands. We started talking and she told me about her life in Indiana and I told her about my divorce. I asked her to go to dinner after the race and she accepted. It was the most magical day I could remember ever having-- I fell in love with a stranger almost immediately. She went back home to Indiana the next morning and I went back to Brooklyn, NY.
Five days later she called me and told me she was packing her bags and moving to her brothers house in Reading, Pennsylvania, so that we could be closer to one another and see each other on weekends. In six months my divorce went through and I asked Karen if she would move in with me. She moved to Brooklyn, NY on Sept 9th 1997 that was the day my life changed like I never thought it would. We became best friends, lovers, and we were happier than anyone could ever imagine. It was a fairytale relationship. We cared for each other and we enjoyed every moment we were together. I cannot describe in words the love and devotion we had for one another. We depended on each other for everything. We never had an argument. We never went to bed alone. We made decisions together, except one- I wanted to marry her right away. Karen felt my daughters were not ready for me to marry and she wanted to give them more time. I told her I would handle them, and she said, No-- they will turn on you. We waited and the kids grew to love Karen. We planned to marry on June 17th 2002 in Las Vegas, in a simple and quiet Chapel wedding. We never got the chance to say the words that we knew we already vowed to- Till death due us partÂ… The events on 9-11-01 took care of that in an instant.
My life was shattered along with thousands of others. My heart and soul was taken away. I finally found the one and she was gone in flash. My life has been changed again forever this time. I will never find that heart and soul again- it was truly a once in a lifetime bond that we had. No money will ever change that nor do I expect it too. In the middle of all this the day I had the memorial service for Karen, my ex wife died suddenly and unexpectedly. This created a new and incredible challenge for me to survive as a person, and now my daughters lives are in even more chaos- they not only lost the woman they had grown to love and who made their father happy, but they also lost their Mom who loved them dearly. I now have to find the inner strength to get my family through all of this. Karen and I lived together for the last 4 and ½ years We were not only soul mates we were best friends and lovers.

My best friend Kristin Rumberger and I spent a year in Australia from the summer of 1999 until the summer of 2000. After September 11th we received over a dozen emails from friends in Australia worried about our safety and the safety of our family and friends. It was incredibly powerful to receive such words of support and love from halfway around the world. It made us feel that the humanity of the world had been attacked, not just the people of the United States.

Dear Friends,
I cannot watch anymore televised horror.
I go outside to water flowers. It is a morning of unsurpassable beauty and serenity. The warm September sunshine sheds golden light on the front wall. The sky is Colorado blue, birds converse as though this is an ordinary day, a breeze stirs the big purple morning glories that embrace our mailbox. I look for the sweet little garter snake that lives in a cranny in the wall. It is a shy creature with lovely greeny-brown stripes and a long, scarlet tongue that snicks the air when it senses me nearby. I tilt the watering can and weep.
Love,
Jane

After waking up to the NPR report of the first tower burning, I spent the morning in front of the TV, weeping with despair. Finally, I couldn't stomach anymore. I sought the comfort (as I usually do when I'm troubled) of my garden. Later, I sent the above e-mail to several close friends.

Good Morning Roland,
Still on telephone stand by. Air quality is poor in
parts of the bldg. My office is in the 10th on the
"1st" floor, directly under the concourse (under the
cafeteria.)
My next door neighbor's office is in the 8th. Areas
bad are 2-6. Poor girl is a nervous wreck, they told
her to come back when she was ready. I am going to go
over and talk to her when she returns from dropping
her daughter off at school. She is feeling like we
felt after the bombing. I am holding up. I realize
now that I was in shock on Tuesday. People had asked
me did I hear or feel anything and I said no. One of
my co-workers told me that I had said "What was that?"
So, I actually did hear and felt the impact of the
crash. Then there was a lot of commotion in the hall
way and that's when we evacuated.
Celeste is in ACOT, so she is very safe! Celeste: I
called Deidre on Wed and told her if she needed
anything or if she needed to talk to call me. She
sounded very good and strong.
Thank everyone for their concerns and prayers. I have
received individual emails from different folks. I
miss you all.
Talk to you soon.

Don't Be Disturbed
"The Lord bringeth the counsel of the heathen to nought: he maketh the
devices of the people of none effect."
-- (Psalm 33:10)
You may be facing trouble today that's being caused by people who have
willfully plotted to do you harm. They may be trying to steal your
business, your home, your children, or even to destroy your marriage.
If
so, I have a word of encouragement for you. According to Psalm 33:10,
God will bring the plans of those people to nought. He will make their
devices of none effect. The counsel of the heathen is brought to
nought,
but the counsel of the Lord stands forever!
Remember this: When you make God your stronghold in the time of
trouble,
no one can overcome you. No matter how powerful they are in the
natural,
the odds are in your favor because you trust in the Lord. They may
think
they've got an edge over you, but God is on your side and that gives
you
the advantage!
Rest assured, you are eventually going to triumph over this trouble. In
the meantime, if you'll set your affections on the Lord, the thoughts
of
His heart continually will be coming into your heart. "The mouth of the
righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. The law
of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide" (Ps.
37:30-31). God's counsel will give you stability when all the world
around you is shaking. Evil tidings will not be able to steal your
peace. The thoughts of God will immediately rise up and rebuke the evil
tidings from taking root in your heart.
Don't let the temporary successes of the troublemaker disturb you.
Instead, "mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of
that man is peace" (verse 37).
-- Gloria Copeland

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was attending a conference in a suburb of Maryland just outside DC sponsored by the Office of Personnel Management. I recall traveling to DC the preceeding weekend and visiting my brother-in-law and then driving to the hotel Sunday evening as the conference began on Monday the 10th. I attended the conference all day Monday and went to dinner Monday evening with a colleague I had not realized was also attending the conference. Having worked at the Pentagon for three years, 92 thru 95, I was contemplating skipping the morning session on the 11th and taking the Metro to the Pentagon and renew some old acquaintances. I decided to attend one of the morning sessions and then make my way to the Pentagon later on. Before those plans could come to fruition, CNN was being broadcast on the large screen at the front of the auditorium where the conference attendees had previously been listening to briefings. It was surreal to say the least. As events unfolded, the conference was eventually cancelled. I recall sitting in the auditorium and my colleague coming up to sit next to me. She asked me what I was going to do. I had a rental car and she didn't. My first thoughts, considering what appeared to be near panic in DC, was to drive to Maryland and stay with my brother-in-law. However, after an hour or so, we decided to "hijack" the rental car and drive back to Florida.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
As we made our way out of the DC area driving south through Virginia, I could not believe how beautiful the day was. There was not a cloud in the sky; crystal blue and I wasn't sure I'd seen a more beautiful day. The country side was magnificent and so picturesque. I contrasted those observations with what I knew was unfolding in New York, the Pentagon and Pennsylvania. It was way too overwhelming. And, then my thoughts turned to my oldest son who was a Lt. in the 101st Airborne. I sensed he was going somewhere. And, I thought my world was quickly collapsing. But, how could that all be true on such a beautiful day?
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
My oldest son soon departed for Afghanistan for six months and received the bronze star for his performance in Operation Anaconda. The celebration and thankfulness of his return was soon muted by the understanding he would be headed to Iraq. He accompanied the 101st up country, spending time in Baghdad and other parts unknown. He is now out of the Army, has a great job in Atlanta and is doing fine. My wife and I aged many years in what seemed like a very long two years. Americans are a resilient people. We are proving we can make great sacrifices. We are also understanding that there is a cost to this precious freedom we enjoy. We should hold this gift closely, nurture it and never forget the price paid by Americans today and in the past. I believe we are a better people and a better country, forged from the events and aftermath of 9/11.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work-- in the same room in which I am now sitting. I was doing whatever I was doing. A coworker who is always excited to be the first to "break" news to everyone else came rushing in from the break room, where CNN Headline News is always on. He said, "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center."
Now, we work at the Dallas Infomart, and the next building to our immediate north is the Dallas "World Trade Center." For whatever reason, that was the first thing I thought of. I remember being surprised that we had not heard it here. It was only after he went on that I realized he was talking about THE World Trade Center.
I remember asking "which tower?" He didn't know.
A few minutes later, our manager, Johnnie, came rushing in. Before long the large, Mission Control-style "Web Boards" were changed. They no longer showed the status of the Help Desk; they projected CNN Headline News, albeit without sound.
The second tower had been hit, and the chances of this being luck had just cratered.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The images, shown over and over, of the 2nd tower being hit by the plane. Of debris shooting out the opposite side of the building from the impact.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
That day seriously damaged our national sense of security, of our innate feeling of invulnerability. They attacked us at the heart of our nation, and at the core of our government.
I think that we were being overly optimistic before, thinking we were untouchable. Some kind of attack was inevitable.
Who would have dreamed it was something this big?
However, they gave us a chance to show that our greatest strength as a nation is our ability to "keep on keepin' on."

LC Story
LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On September 11, 2001 I was on holiday in Scotland with my Mother. I'd taken her there for her 75th birthday and it was only her second trip out of the USA. After a day of shopping we jumped into a taxi for a ride to our hotel. The taxi driver recognized our accents and asked if we'd heard the news. He told us that a plane had flown into one of the WTC towers and we were both shocked. By the time we got back to our room the second plane had struck and we watched on CNN as the towers collapsed.
We cried and cried. We couldn't call home because the circuits were busy and we couldn't fly home because all flights were grounded.
That night we needed to pray so we walked to a local Episcopal cathedral. The church doors were closed and two people stood on the steps talking. One of them asked us if we needed to pray and then led us to the back of the church, opened a tiny door and allowed us inside. She took us to the altar, gave us a candle and told us to stay and pray as long as we wished. May God bless her.
The next day we took a train to London. One afternoon we walked along Charing Cross looking through book stores when I stopped in front of a Muslim book store. Inside a man and woman sat at a desk. I stood outside and went through a storm of emotions. I wanted to go inside and pray with the man and woman, pray for understanding and peace. I also wanted to go in and attack them, blaming them, in my ignorance, for the attack. Loving and hating, I was there for 5 minutes before I noticed they had become uncomfortable under my gaze and I walked on.
The world reached out to us. In the Underground an English woman stopped my mother and hugged her, they cried together.
During a church service the priest wore a T-Shirt with the American flag on it.
We stood outside Westminster Abbey during 4 minutes of silence when the whole city came to a halt, even the trains stopped in the Underground. The only sound was of quiet sobs.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Standing on a side street holding my 75 year-old mother as she sobbed at the horrible news.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The world is different now. I can never see it the same again. I'll not ever feel that happy-go-lucky feeling I had before the attack. I hate the way that my country responded with bombs, but I do believe that time will judge our actions to be understandable if not justified.
Since the attack I have read the Torah, the New Testament and the Holy Qur'an. I've conversed extensively with Muslims and I now understand that the people who attacked the US are no more Muslim than Timothy McVeigh was Christian. Islam is a beautiful religion.
As for America, I believe our response has alienated us in the world community. The world was with us for the first few weeks after the attack. But our President Bush was brash and ignorant in his remarks. He immediately angered the world and continued, over time, to turn sentiment against us and it will take decades to repair the damage caused by his ignorance.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was driving to work, about 5:30 am on September 11. I work and live in Southern California and what was first reported as a small plane apparantly misdirected into the World Trade Center, quickly became the larger jet we all learned about. I immidiately suspected terrorism and when the second plane hit (I was at work by then and watching the TV in our office) I knew. In fact, the jihad declared by Islam had come home. I called home and alerted my wife to turn on the TV. Coming from a Jewish background, the impact of this was immediate. Now my friends and co-workers might see things in a different light.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The fear for my family and that I could not protect them. Second, it was another reminder that, indeed, we may be living in the "end times."
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Recognizing that the world would never be the same. It's one thing to see it in a distant land, on TV, but it's "them" not "us". Now it's us. We may be headed into a very long and dark time in America.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was on my way to work when the attack started. It was just another normal morning drive to work. I was listening to the radio when they broke in to say that a plane struck the World Trade Center. I hoped that it was not pilot error that caused the crash. I had also said a prayer right then for the families of the victims. As I drove further down the road, the radio station I was listening to broke in again. I thought they had found more news about the crash. I then realized that a second plane had struck the World Trade Center. At that point, my heart sank to the pit of my stomach and I knew we were under attack of one form or another. When I arrived at work, the TV's that are spread across the floor were all on CNN and everyone watched as the towers fell and the reports came in about Pennsylvania and The Pentagon. Those events confirmed my belief that we were truly under attack.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of September 11th has to be watching the twin towers collapse into a mass of rubble knowing that there were still hundreds of people in the towers either unaware of the happenings or unable to leave.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
My since of security has certainly gone up. I constantly watch my surroundings and look for anything out of the ordinary or suspicious. Coming from a military and armed security background, I keep myself in that same frame of mind as if I am always in danger.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was on vacation with my family at the Jersey shore. My mother and I were returning from a walk on the beach when a man said, "You might want to turn the television on when you get back to your house. Two planes have hit the World Trade Center." We ended up spending most of the day in front the television watching the day's events unfold. Most of my family is from a town 35 miles north of NYC. I came from Washington, DC to meet them at the vacation house. We felt fortunate to be away from terrorist targets and very fortunate to all be together.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
There are so many strong memories from that day. It is impossible for me to choose which memory is the strongest, so I will simply write about my first strong memory of September 11. I was on vacation at the beach, standing alone on the shore. The view was postcard-perfect . . . sparkling water, rolling waves, seagulls flying overhead, sandpipers running along the surf. The words that came into my head (and my thoughts don't typically move in this direction) were "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad." At that same moment the first plane was crashing into the World Trade Center.
