LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was teaching Technology at St. Elizabeth School in Washington Heights, West 187th Street. Our first concern was the safety of our children and we decided at first not to inform the children so as not to scare them. The children we teach are in grades Pre K to 8th Grade. As the situation worsened and we got word of the buildings collapsing, parents started arriving and taking their children home. At that point we said there was a problem with the subways and parents would be picking up their children. We tried to continue as normal a day as we could until most of the children had been picked up. I kept in contact with my family through cell phone communication and ascertained their safety. The Principal and Assistant Principal live at the school and they waited with any children who were not picked up.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
It was almost impossible to get home as the George Washington Bridge was closed for safety. I decided to cross to the Bronx and take home 3 young ladies who car pooled with me. As we crossed the 181st Street Bridge into the Bronx the scene was surreal. Most people were walking across the Bridge as the buses were stopped. Upon looking towards the lower part of Manhattan I will never forget what I saw. The huge columns of smoke that covered the sky coming from where the World Trade Center buildings had stood. We couldn't help but think of all the people in the buildings and we prayed for them.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
We are all at a different awareness about terrorists and the dangers we face. We are more alert but are resigned to the fact that we want to continue to live our lives to the fullest and enjoy every day we have.

I was at work on capitol hill when I heard the news. We tried to watch the news and then people started calling the office saying they were bombing capitol hill. Some co-workers and I left the building and ran to a friend's house about 10 blocks away. As we ran we kept hearing large booms that we assumed were bombs. We later found out it was the sonic booms from the jets taking of from Andrews Air Force Base. We stayed at our friend's house until late that evening when it was clear to drive back to Virginia and Maryland.

LC Story: Affects

In the beginning I feel it brought our country closer together. I now feel that our political leaders are using the events of September 11 as an excuse to promote their own agenda and financial gain.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work. I work for the Army Reserve full time and I was visiting one of my reserve units in Oklahoma City, OK during that day.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I remember at first thinking that it was some kind of comercial or satire, then it became all too real. I guess at first I was in shock wondering how this could have happened, then wondering how many more planes were in the air heading for targets. This event angered me, if they had an issue with the US Government, then they should have came after the military instead of being chickens and attacking helpless civilians. I was so proud of the civilians that forced the plane into the ground before it hit it's target. They were true patriots, someone I wish that I had here in my reserve unit. Since I am an Army Reserve Soldier and I was at an Army Reserve Facility, we quickly took steps to secure our facility, taking count of everyone in the facility and checking for unknown people. After we were secure I finally had time to contact my wife to make sure that she and my daughter were fine and to let her know that I was okay. We all had preparations to make in case we were needed, but we had all of the TVs on in the facility, keeping up on all possible information that was avaiable. I think that my strongest feelings from this event is anger that they were such chickens and pride in our people coming together and our country standing up to this attack.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think that it has strengthened this country and brought the people closer together than they ever have been, I can only hope that they never forget this event and that we are ALL AMERICANS. It has allowed the common person on the street to get a better understanding of what the uniformed services (firemen, policemen and the military) of this nation face every day. It showed them the dedication that our uniformed services have and live by. It has made me even more proud to be in the military serving to defend my country. I have spent time on active duty and now I am in the reserve, this year I will have been in the military for 25 years and I have no expectation of getting out, especially not now, while we have a job to finish.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in Austin, Texas. I was taking the bus and attempting to reach my storage locker. It was necessary for me to take two buses and then WALK to the storage site. My items were in storage for some time due to the fact I had been unable to obtain constant and safe housing. Due to CONSTANT problems with my bank I had a lot of cash BUT no identification.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Par for the course. This is the country that was unable to protect my minor child and myself (if, you could CALL what happened to me "protection") when I, as an Independent Fee Appraiser for the Veteran's Administration in Los Angeles, complained to the so-called proper authorities about irregularities concerning my work and the lack of co-operation and truthfulness of "individuals" from these organizations.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Where is my house, my home, my child, my dog, my cat, my career(that I worked for!), my belongings, ALL my legal rights et cetera? If this country had more people like me none of this would have ever happened! Certain individuals in this country were so interested in trying to make me something I am not and could never be in order to "feather" their own nests.
Bratislava, Slovakia, Pope John Paul II,9/11/03 "...a
society respectful of human life in all its
expressions that promotes the family as a place of
reciprocal love and growth of persons, that seeks the
common good and is attentive to the needs of the
weakest". . . .

advantages. Great affluence, in fact, can also
generate great poverty."

states: "No citizen
of this state shall be deprived of life, liberty,
property, privileges
or immunities, or in any other manner disenfranchised,
except by
the due course of the law of the land."
It is the continuous flagrant actions of the following
two-faced
self-serving sneaks(on both sides)that causes these
and other types of monetary/legal shortfalls.
So justify this, if you can!
This "play for cash, food, hotel room(lodging)" is no
new thing.
If one wants to put someone into jail, cause trouble
even kill or injure a person
with no retaliation just go to your local
shelters(both religious

dealing with not only
their immediate needs, food, shelter, cash, but also a
consideration
on their so-called mental/physical state, employment

I guess if I was a

to be a concern to ANYONE!
I was an Independent Fee Appraiser for the Veterans

disgraceful, traumatic and extremely disgusting it is
a matter of
public record. I am able to speak with considerable
authority as to the lack of sensitivity to

was a responsible homeowner but in the true sense of

"compassionate and caring" landlord. And, much to my
disadvantage,
as the record shows, a good and concerned citizen to
an ungrateful
two-timing/two-faced sniveling nation. A woman who,
under the guise

denied the basic
necessities of life, limb, security and justice.

to a mental hospital after being notified by the
mental health worker for the
sheriff's department that the Request for Personal
Recog. was signed
by a Judge "two weeks" prior to being transmitted to
me and after refusing a
Plea Bargain.
A convenient re-arrest periodically, in this case May
29, 2003 and

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I heard about the first plane hitting the WTC tower as I pulled into the parking lot at work. I remember thinking it must have been some small, private plane and a horrible pilot error....so will they sue Cessna or Raytheoncompanies right here in my hometown.
I turned the radio on as soon as I got to my desk and when I heard the news of the second plane, went to the internet news sites and started to watch the story unfold. We really didn't accomplish much at work that day, everytime something new came across the news, we gathered around the computer to watch.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My daughter's Girl Scout Troop was meeting at our house that evening. We held the meeting, with the girls all seated around my kitchen table and watching the news on the small TV in the kitchen. The girls, 13 and 14 years old, of course had the hard questions of why would someone do something like this? how can someone be so evil? Trying to help them make some sense of a senseless act and to try to reassure them that wetheir parentsour country's leaderswould do everything we could to keep them safe...when we really didn't know if we could....is my strongest memory.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The immediate impact was not so unexpected. My sense of security was shaken. I shared in the surge of patriotism that followed, we flew our flag daily, not just on holidays, we gave to the Red Cross.
Living in and working in the Wichita, Kansas, area, where the major employer is Boeingas well as the other aircaft manufacturers and the many subcontractorsour local econmy has suffered and that has touched our lives in very direct ways.
While my husband and I have not been unemployedor feel particularly at risk of unemployment, we have friends and neighbors who have been unemployed. One of our volunteer projects is holiday help for families, distributing food and gifts. We have seen more families asking for help in the last two years as the long term effects of the downturn in airline travel nationwide has trickled down to impact our local economy.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On September 11,2001 I was in my dorm room at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Mi. I woke up to the man on the radio saying there has been a terrible plane crash. That a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center. I did not think anything about it, just another plane crash I said to myself then went to my political science class. After class I arrived back at my dorm and my roomate told me that we were under attack and that is when I ran to the tv to see the second plane hit the second tower. We watched the news the rest of the day and I was so sad and scared. I wanted to be back home in Algonac, Mi with my family and loved ones. I just wanted to hold my loved ones. I could not just hop in the car and go home I had to stay at school and I was not able to drive for 3 hours home. So I did the next best thing. I called my family to say I love them. Before my next class started I found out that they closed the campus down for the day and all classes were cancelled. The first time my college has closed down. The rest of the day and week everyone talked of the terrorist attacks. This memory is forever stuck in my head.
LC Story: Memory

My strongest memory of that day is watching the towers collapse.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On the morning of September 11, 2001, I had just gotten out of my english class and was on my way to band. I was in eighth grade andwent to Lakota Ridge Junior School. In between classes I heard that the World Trade Towers had been bombed. This didn't mean very much to me at the time, a couple of floors being bombed is big, but not unbelievable. When I got to band class, my teacher turned on the T.V. and we proceeded to watch the planes fly into the towers, and then watch the towers collapse. The sights were horrific.Confusion, anger, grief, and disbelief filled the streets, news broadcasters were overwhelmed and disiorented. We watched the news for the rest of class, and when the bell rang and I entered the hallway, many people were silent, shocked at what just occured. In my next class was a girl bawling. Her father was a trucker, and he had a delivery today at the World Trade Towers. She was incredibly scared and there really wasnt much you could do, nobody knew if he survived or not. The day continued and the later it got, the quieter the halls were as more people learned about the tragic attacks. I went home after school, and my mom talked to my sister, brother and I. She explained about terrorism and how many countries loathe the U.S. I never really took this into consideration before September 11. The next few days passed as if in a dream. The damage done and lives lost were unbelievable. Talking to my family and friends helped relieve some of the stress, and answer some questions.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I remember standing at my locker, and the boy next to me saying, "The Trade Towers Were Bombed". I didnt think much of it, bombings were not common, but certantly wern't unbelievable. The next most vivid memory was sitting in band class, watching the planes fly into the towers, and then watching the buildings fall over and over again. Throughout the day, all we did was watch the news. I can still the fire, smoke and confusion shown on the T.V.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Recently after September 11th, many people were reminded of patriotism. I saw a lot more flags, and I saw how lucky I am to live in such a great country. Today, about two years after the attacks, the attacks really haven't effected me. I didn't lose any friends or family members in the attacks, I didn't even know anyone who passed away. The only thing that really changed is that I see a lot more flags displayed. September 11th definitley opened many eyes, but the effects soon died away. The attacks did nothing to directly effect my way of living. Life went back to normal very soon after September 11th which is a horrifying fact. How many lost lives will it take to open up everybody's eyes?

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I remember September 11, 2001 very well. I was fourteen years old. It started for me in the hall of my Ohio Junior Highschool. A boy I knew passed me in the hall, a grin on his face.
Lauren theres been an attack! On the World Trade Center! Someone crashed into the side! Its so cool! In seconds the crowd had pushed him away. I was confused; I didnt see how that was cool at all. I entered my third period class, Mrs. Muncys computer typing class. She had the TV on and was staring at it in shock. I went to my desk and sat down, my own eyes glued to the TV. Without realizing it I was soon on my feet as well, ignoring the other students as they filled into the room. All I could do was stare at the TV in horror.
Around me the students went to work, typing the assignments as we had been trained to. I didnt move. I just stared at the TV. I thought about how much the boy in the hall must regret his words now. I remember glancing around the room, not understanding how the other kids could just work like that. Didnt they realize what was happening? How many people were dying?
I watched the first tower fall, saw the images of running New Yorkers and of the giant cloud that followed them, watching as fleeing figures were engulfed by it. I remember everyone being coated with dirt. I can recall the feeling that filled me-the pure shock and terror for the people I saw on the screen.
And then I saw the second tower fall. I will always remember what I thought as I watched it crumble and heard the all but crying voices of the reporters.
Oh God. Were going to war.
Throughout the day we watched the newscasts. I had to force myself to leave the cafeteria; I couldnt stand how the kids just went on talking. I couldnt stand how many of them didnt even think about what was happening in New York. I went to the library and watched from there. I remember wanting to help the people in New York so badly. I had sudden urges to join the army, join the firefighters-to just DO anything to help. I felt so trapped in West Chester, Ohio, far away from where I could help. My fingers shook with the need to help somehow.
The day after school is a blue, I returned home I retreated to the downstairs (I couldnt bring myself to watch the images again with my mother and brother) and to the telephone, calling my best friend for comfort. Dinner was quite, the news was on. No one spoke, we just ate. Then we went to bed. And then the next morning we woke up, and went to work and school.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory is the tower falling. I remember being terrified for the people who were still in it, terrified for the people running away from it.
But one of the memories about it all that stands out the strongest in my mind is a picture I saw afterwards. Of firefighters in Berlin (I believe) all lined up in a roe with white roses. They were giving their support to the American NYFD. For some reason that just touched me really deeply.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Nationally- on the way to school on Sept. 12, I counted 98 American Flags somewhere. Before there was lest then three.
Personally- I have always been very patriotic, ever since I was little I have wanted to join the army. This just made me want to more.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in my office on 51 Street and Lexington Avenue in New York City. I was looking at emails and some yelled from across the room that a plane hit one of the Twin Towers.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The strongest memory was watching the buildings come down. The horror of knowing that my cousin, Donald T. Jones, II of Cantor Fitzgerald was more than likely dead.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think it has effected everyone in regards to personal safety. Realizing that terror attacks can strike at anytime, has made more aware of our surroundings. Things like "The Go-Bag" would never have been necessary to make if we weren't attacked. To attack innocent people is the most cowardly act anyone can make. But on a positive thought, it has given Americans a new sence of PRIDE in our country and a strength to see us through the difficult times ahead.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
That day started out like any other day. I barely got to school on time and was already about to fall asleep halfway through my first class when another student came in. Nobody paid much attention when she started talking to the teacher, but when the TV came on and everyone started to realize what was happening, we paid very close attention. At first I didn't believe what was happening. I knew it was real, but the only thing I thought was that this can't be real. The whole class sat there silent, just glued to the screen. We listened to everything being said. We'd switch channels back and forth just in case we might miss something, but it was all the same. Everything was the same, what was happening was real. That was the craziest realization, that what I was watching was happening to real people. The rest of the day didn't matter; every class was watching what was happening. I'll always remeber what one teacher said to my class. He said "You'll remember this day for the rest of your life, you will know what you were doing, who was with you and what was said". He was right.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
There are actually two memories that are the strongest of that day. The first is when I realized that what was happening was real. The second is seeing people jump out of the towers on live television and knowing there was nothing that could have saved their lives.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think it has made us a more cautious nation. I believe it helped us realize weak points in our defense, but as a nation i don't believe it affected our country the way I believe the terrorist wanted it. It did hurt but it by no means "broke us". We'll remeber the people who died that day and be saddened because of the enormous loss of each of their lives and we'll remeber the terrorist with anger at what they had done, but I don't believe it had the intended affect. With me personally, I'm still trying to figure that out.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
As a Biology teacher at Leander High School in Leander, Texas, I was in my classroom preparing my lecture for that day. I turned on the television to listen to the early news when the first thing I saw was the first tower bellowing smoke and shortly thereafter seeing a jet slam into the second tower.
I sat in my chair in disbelief; maybe instead of watching the news I was watching a movie. But slowly it dawned on me... this is real!
At the appointed time students began to arrive. As they entered they asked if we were watching a video. I motioned for them to sit down. Once the class started, I advised them of what was happening. At first, they thought I was joking. I was bombarded with questions such as "Are we going to war?" or "Are they going to drop bombs on us?". Several of my students started to cry. I assured my students that we were safe. I also told them that if we went to war against whoever did this, our military would take care of it.
That day I did not teach Biology. We watched what was happening and I answered questions from my students.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of that day is watching some of my students cry. They were frightened!
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The events of September 11 caused our country to further unify. Many became patriotic and those of us who were became even more.

I remember I was in my English class at the time of the attack's but I had no clue to what was going on until I entered my 2nd period class which was Choir. I was a Junior in High School at the time of the attacks and now I'm a Senior. I remember that I could almost hear a pin drop when we were watching the news and some of us even had tears in our eye's and then just watching the tower's come crashing down to the ground was very hard to watch. In the days that followed the attacks I remember arriving at school everyday to see our flags flying at half staff for several weeks and then our school did a money drive to help the people of New York and Pennsylvania. I felt sad for all those families who lost their loved ones on that day and I will never be able to forget them.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of that day would have to be when I realized that our men and women of the military were going to be called up for duty. I also remember our flag being lowered to half staff for several weeks to come.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think that the events of September 11th have made this country stronger because it has brought people closer together. I think it has made me a stronger person but yet it made me more appreciative of the freedom of this country.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On September 11, 2001, I was at the technical college where I was earning an associates degree in marketing. It was morning and I was walking through the halls on the bottom floor. It was a crisp bright morning, and I felt motivated and happy. I was on my way to the library when I noticed two of my instructors watching television. I asked "what's goin on guys?"
No one answered me. I looked up to the television to witness live coverage of one of the twin towers burning with a huge gap in the top of it. I was horrified, but not as horrified as I was when I witnessed the second plane hitting the other tower on live television. My heart sunk and I looked directly into one of my instructors eye and I could see that he was crying. I felt the tears on my face, warm and trickling from my chin. I went to the restroom and cried to myself. I could not for the life of me stop thinking of the utter horror of the people on those planes and in those buildings. It hurt me to think of those poor people and the hell the went through. For the rest of the day the college held classes as usual, but only optional classes. We discussed what had happened and our anger for those who had done it. That afternoon I went home and went to bed emotionally drained by the graphic scenes I had witnessed on television all day long.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of 9/11, 2001, was the moment I witnessed the second plane hit the second tower. It was such a crisp and sureal event, and the implications of the second plane were so terrible, that I will live with that memory for the rest of my life and cry when I think about it as I am now.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The events of september 11th have effected the United States of America in a devestating way. It has opened the door for political extremism, and has set us back in racial relations. The events of 9/11, 2001 has devistated our economy, and shaken the very foundation of freedom in America.
Shortly after 9/11 I decided to change my choice in education. I decided to concentrate on my family and work instead of going to school for marketing. I felt as if my faith in the good of humanity was lost, and my trust in people as individuals would never be the same. A few of my friends from school had left for afghanistan. Many of my friends started families, and moved away. I basically resigned to an average life, and just trying to survive and be there to love my family. For a while afterwards everyone I knew and know lived in a state of fear; waiting for the next shoe to drop. We discussed nuclear attacks in the cities nearby, and how we would survive terrorist attacks.
The trust in humanity we once had as Americans in a free country has been destroyed because of the terrorists of 9/11. We now all live in a state of fear and defense. This is not a happy country, and I don't know when it will become one. I believe the only people that are happy about the way things are going in this country are the few militaristic radicals of wars past, and the religious zealots who seak an end... a proof of their beliefs. The "I told you so's", and the "end is neighs."

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
My husband and I had arrived in Florida from Fairfax, Virgina just a few days before September 11, 2001. We were starting our 2 week vacation. After spending a lovely Monday with friends in Melbourne, Florida, we were checking out of our hotel to head down to Vero Beach. We turned on the TV to use the checkout service and saw the news. At first we thought it was a tape from the earlier WT bombing, but we soon realized something else was happening. I urged my husband to hurry, as were we staying on the 17th floor of a high rise hotel.
Down in the lobby everyone watched the television. It was about 9:00 am. I took out the cell phone and called my co-workers in Washington, D.C. They had heard nothing about the attack on the Pentagon, in spite of working just 2 blocks from the White House. They immediately left the building.
Back in Florida we asked ourselves - What should we do? Where should we go? My husband, Dave, was an active duty guardsman - should we report to Patrick AFB, the closest base to us? With the phone lines tied up, we could not get through to the Andrews AFB office to check in. Since no orders were given, we proceeded to Vero Beach to visit relatives.
My widowed aunt was happy to see us and encouraged us to stay with her as she was alone. I like to think it gave her peace of mind. That day we learned about the pilots of the planes training in the Vero Beach area. I remember that it rained all that day in Florida, while we all watched the television.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I think the confusion and uncertainty of that day remain as the primary memory. Where to go, what to do. We went to a restaurant - there was noone there. People were afraid to go anywhere. It was the fear of the unknown. It was as if we were all infants and the world was a big scarry place. But we had noone to guide us. We really needed to did deep to keep calm.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
We have lost our innocence and our carefree joy. Our parents knew what this was like - they lived through WWII and the depression. Some of the Vietnam vets knew what this was like - but the rest of us were untainted by the horror. Now we knew what real fear was like.
We spent the remainder of our time in Florida wandering from one empty tourist spot to another. Patriotism surged. We checked in with every relative who had left messages on our answering machine. We wondered if we should go home to Fairfax - to the machine guns in the streets of Washington. We kept waiting for the other shoe to drop. We are still waiting. I think we will be waiting for the rest of our lives. This apprehension is difficult to live with day to day. Now with the Iraq war, it just gets worse.

How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Up until that event, the American people took freedom for granted. As a military retiree, they have never experience what we in the military have gone through to protect them. The American people, including our elected officials, never thought that this would happen in America. In my personal opinion and military experience, its a wonder that this didnt happen a long time ago. Even though this event was horrible, thank God that our enemies did not plot to destroy strategically targets at the same time, i.e. like the Vietnamese did in Vietnam.
I believe after a while, we will let our guard down again. History repeats itself.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was working for The Bank of New York at 101 Barclay Street, which is across the street from 7 World Trade Center. I arrived by subway into Park Place station which is the stop before the Trade Center, only to be detoured by police to evacuate immediately onto the street. What I saw in front of my eyes is etched into my memory...An airplane engine right in front of the entrance to 100 Church Street where I part of my staff work. Eyeglasses, briefcases, shoes, bloody injured people, and then I looked up to see my fiance's building in flames. He worked for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 101st floor of Tower 1. I frantically tried to call him on his office phone, cell phone, and pager, but had no response. I saw the smoke and flames pouring out the windows and prayed that he had found the emergency stairs to evacuate. Then I saw the people start to jump out the windows, some holding hands, some on fire....I was in total shock and disbelief when someone told me planes had hit the Trade Center. It was so surreal. David's 46 birthday was the night before, and we had just celebrated with dinner at Gramercy Tavern. We had just had a family celebration for Brunch 2 days earlier where pictures were taken...the last pictures of him. I was ushered by some of my staff back into the Bank for safety from falling debris, when I had frantic calls from his family..."had I heard from David Agnes"...he took the early train to work that morning, as he had a dentist appointment and had to leave a bit early. As I hung up the phones, and checked my email to see if he was able to get a message to me, we heard this tremendous roaring sound and a cloud of smoke with a feeling of an earthquake shaking the building. 101 Barclay is a 24 story total glass facade building...we dove underneath our desks to hide from the breaking glass. After that, the Bank evacuated and as I was on the 8th floor, by the time I reached the street, Tower 1 began to fall....Co-workers grabbed my hand to pull me away, as they were afraid the debris would hit us running down Greenwich Street. I didn't want to leave. My love was in a burning building and there was nothing I could do to save him....I ran...After running several blocks, the Police told us to run eastward, as they believed a truck with a bomb was parked at the corner of Canal Street.....we ran again, then more police heard over their walkie talkies, that someone was throwing grenades off a truck...run north....(It was not true, but no one knew the truth that day). No one wanted to believe that such evil could occur in our own backyard. We finally stopped running and I was the last person to cross the Brooklyn Bridge that morning by foot. I only wanted to get home to my family and my son...My son friends lost 4 fathers in his senior class in Manhasset High School that day. Over 7 children in one elementary class lost parents...That night when I was able to finally get home, I was surrounded by family and friends, and called by Cantor Fitzgerald to find out if David came home...no he didn't make it out alive. Yet, the next morning, I went to the dentist to get copies of his x-rays, and go to St, Vincent's hospital to wait for word of the injured. Hoping and praying that they would find him...They finally identified his body parts in early August 2002, as they actually found his body on the other side of the building from where he worked. His body was not burned, and knowing him, they went up as high as they could away from the flames. He was a leader and I know he was helping to guide everyone, and calm them for their fateful last moments. He had a zest for life and loved to travel with me...our new life together was cut short, before we were able to be married. I have him in my heart always, as he is in my thoughts everyday of my life.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Watching the people jump from the floors where Cantor staff worked, and finding body parts all around, while knowing that my fiance could not escape. For me, my strongest nightmare that still occurs, is me running for my life as his building was collapsing, and feeling this overwhelming feeling that he was pushing me to safety, when I felt I couldn't run anymore. Panic at every corner when even the police didn't know which way you should run....disbelief in the eyes of everyone who ran...and the question why?
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I am very aware of security measures around me at all times, exits, and I get jittery in crowds. I noticed the days before the Trade Center was hit, increased security with FBI and dogs at the entrance way for the trucks, and actually commented to my fiance, that someone important must be in town attending a function in the Towers...I truly believe that they were aware of an increased threat, but never realized it would come from the air, and not the ground. I have a deep appreciation for our military personnel, and staff in the Bank who are on leave for military duty. Our area not runs a Toy's For Tots program with the Marines, to help support children at the holidays. I also find that I'm giving more to charity. I still travel, but much less than I did before. My son now works for JetBlue, and is a sophmore at George Washington University in Washington DC. It's 2 blocks from the White House, but he felt compelled to help make a difference politically and socially by helping to increase airline effectiveness, security and quash fears of people still avoiding flying. I think students or people in the late teens early 20's have no fear and live their lives as if nothing has happened...They tend to get on with their lives much easier than the older generation who remember Pearl Harbor, or who had children in the Trade Center that day....I still hate traveling into NYC everyday to work, but that's what I must do to live. My fear never leaves me, and when the terror alerts go up, I'm in panic mode.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work and received a call from my husband who works for a news organization. At work, we quickly hooked up a tv and started listening to the news. I stayed at work and throughout the day we listened to the news. It was difficult to work. After returning home I watched TV news with my family all evening and into the morning.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Seeing the twin towers fall and thinking about all the people in the buildings and the families who were affected by the tragedy
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
There are so many things that affected our country. The strongest one that stands out in my mind is how diverse we are. The population of our country is made up of all races and I think that through the media we were able to see the diverse population of the US. Despite those differences many of us care about each other. It seemed like people were nicer to one another after the attack and continue to be more patient with one another.

How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
i think we learned that day that our oceans dont protect us from a determined foe that our open society helped the terrorist succeed that day we lost our virginity and joined all the nations that have had similar experiences on there own land it is a defining moment in our lives there is before 9-11 and after 9-11 i think we found out how people felt on dec 7 1941
