LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I work about 2 blocks from the Capitol Building. About a half hour after I had gotten in to work that morning, I received a phone call from my husband (who works in Virginia) telling me that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. My immediate thought was that it must have been an accident but when he told me that 2 different planes had struck, it sunk in that this was an act of terror. I told my co-workers what I had heard and we immediately turned on the radio. Some of us tried to log on to CNN.com but it was already inaccessible from so many people trying to log on at once. We were all still in a state of disbelief when the report came on that the Pentagon had also been hit by a plane. Suddenly the radio was filled with unconfirmed reports and rumors about how the Mall was burning and that a bomb went off in front of the State Department. For the first time in my life, I knew what it was like to be under attack. After many calls back and forth with my husband, I decided to leave the building and go to a friend's house who lived nearby the office but away from the Capitol. At this point, reports stated that the Metro was closed and people were beginning to evacuate the city by car and on foot. Several of us from my office ended up at this friend's house and we remained glued to the television set watching the unfolding events. I watched in sheer disbelief as the towers crumbled into dust and the pentagon burned. I thought of all the lives of those who's deaths I was witnessing. Schools were being closed early and my husband was on his way home from Virginia to Rockville so that he could be home when they got there. We were in constant touch by cell phone. I couldn't get any calls out of the area though to tell our families that we were alright but finally he was able to contact them. By early afternoon, it seemed that it was definitely over and Metro was running again. As I walked to the station, I felt the eerie quiet of the city. Still very shaken, I took the train home. I thought about what a beautiful morning it had been. A perfect late summer/early fall sunny day. Nevertheless, it was just a regular day. I remember thinking about how such a regular,run-of-the-mill morning could turn into such an unforgettable day.
I was the last of us to get home. We all hugged each other and were all very aware of how grateful we were to be together, knowing full well that there would be thousands of families who would not have such reunions. As the day wore on, the television never went off. Friends came over and we all felt the need to be with people we loved and cared about. There was a need to connect. I don't know how many times that day that I watched the plane hitting the second tower, the burst of flames, and then the crumbling. I do know that the image immediately became part of our collective conscious.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Aside from the obvious images of destruction that will stay with me for the rest of my life, what I remember most is the feeling of being under attack and how desparately I just wanted to be home surrounded by my family---all of us safe. There was a feeling of helplessness throughout the day---witnessing horrific events that couldn't be changed, not being able to get home, not being able to make calls outside the area. I'll also always remember the sense of being aware that I was witnessing a terrible chapter in American history.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The country has been affected in many ways. We've lost our misguided feeling of invincibility that we had prior to September 11th. We now know that being oceans away from most of the rest of the world doesn't always protect us. It's easier now for us to become lax with civil liberties and civil rights if it means fighting terrorism. We have to be very careful about falling into that kind of thinking - of not taking away these fundamental values of American Democracy. If we do allow our rights to be manipulated, the terrorists will have succeeded.
Personally, I'm much more aware of my surroundings now than I was before. I pay attention to the people around me and sometimes look for the nearest exit when I'm in a public space. My husband and I finally wrote a will as a result of September 11th. Mostly it has left me with a heaviness of spirit and much worry about the world our children will live in.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was working on an Army installation and a group of us were getting ready to leave to perform some charity work (painting a playground). I was getting ready to shut down my computer when an email from my supervisor came in saying that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. At the momement we turned on our black and white portable TV, we saw the second plane hit.
I believe that the person in charge of our "painting group" was in shock because she wanted to leave and board the bus like nothing happened. We had to switch buses because of a glitch and while waiting for the new bus I heard that the Pentagon had been hit. It took all of us to convince our team leader that we needed to go back to our offices and wait for some official word to come from our headquarters.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of the day actually happened that evening. We had beautiful clear skies and I remember going outside (I live in a rural area) and seeing no aircraft in the skies. The stars were so beautiful and undisturbed, and here we were on the ground that September 11th evening still not knowing about survivors at the WTC, if another attack was pending, etc.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Sadly, most Americans will forget the lessons of September 11th. On that day and for weeks later, I heard all these comparisons to December 7, 1941.
This past year, I've heard more about December 7th than September 11th.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was flying a DC 10 cargo aircraft between Memphis and Campinas, Brazil when we received a radio phone patch from our Company. I was notified that upon arrival in Brazil we would be met by armed guards and escorted to our hotels, and that the aircraft would be placed under 24 hour armed surveillance. This information came completely out of the blue as we had no idea what had just happened in New York. Since we were south of Cuba but north of the South American coastline, we were not subject to recall as other aircraft were. I asked my Company if they could provide more information to us, and they responded "no." We searched our aircraft for anything out of the ordinary and finding nothing, made one more inquiry for additional information. It was then that we learned that all civil aircraft had been ordered to land in the USA. We speculated that a nuclear accident or incident may have occurred, or that an attack on the USA may have occurred. We later spoke to a small twin-engine aircraft, over the Amazon River, that was a US registered aircraft, based on his call sign. The pilot relayed to us what had happened earlier at the World Trade Center. He had watched CNN and had all the information to relay to us. Needless to say, after landing in Brazil we got the "rest of the story" and remained there for several days, until the flight restrictions in the USA were lifted. My crew and I watched the subsequent events and aftermath unfold on BBC. We also had access to CNN but the picture quality was better on BBC. We eventually migrated back to CNN because the news source was from the USA and we wanted to share the perspective from an American point of view.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The momentary uncertainty of exactly what had happened, and what our crew's responsibility was to be totally aware of our surroundings and what we should be prepared to do if any situations arose. Not knowing exactly what had happened, our first concerns were for our families on the ground, back in the USA.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I told my crew upon landing in Brazil that aviation, as we knew it, had changed forever. I feel that was one of my more accurate observations, the ramifications of which are still unfolding. I was and am proud of my fellow Americans, worldwide, who have united to change the course of civilization and to eradicate, inasmuch as possible, evil-motivated people.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
We work in the Central Time Zone, so at the moment the plane hit I was just sitting down to my desk at High Plains Journal. HPJ is a weekly agricultural publication that covers ag in the High Plains, South Dakota to Texas.
Anyway, I was firing up my computer, getting coffee, and chatting with one of my co-workers when we heard the news that one plane had hit one of the towers. Then, only minutes later, we heard another had hit the other tower. By the time I got to the CNN website for more info., they were reporting that the towers had fallen, and that there was an attack at the Pentagon and in Penn. as well.
All I could think at those moments was that the people in those offices were doing just the very same thing I was doing that morning... firing up their computers, getting coffee, checking email and voicemail, getting ready for a productive day.
I prayed, right there at my desk. And, I continued to pray as the reports came in. I come from a strong Methodist background and that's always been my first instict--take it to God. I called my family and prayed with them. I went to church here in town and we prayed.
But, most importantly, I'm a journalist, even if all I cover is agriculture. So, my next instict was to get the angle of how the attacks affected my readers, the farmers and ranchers in the High Plains. We tried to get updates on bioterrorism as they came out in the following weeks, and one of our reporters attended several community meetings. We live in an area that is surrounded by cattle feedyards and processing plants. Food security is our liveliehood. The stories were there, and covering them took my mind off of the pain for others.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Seeing the exhaustion on the reporters' and photographers' faces as they provided coverage. I am a trained journalist, and I cover agriculture. I will never have to face covering a story like the one that unfolded during that day. I later wrote about it, as a kind of catharsis because I had a lot of guilt. Guilt that I wasn't there to help the media get information to the public. Guilt that there were reporters there risking a lot to get the 20 sec. sound bite or the photo for page one.... and I was safe and secure in Dodge City, Kan., and covering the next update on the new farm bill. Not exactly fair.
My next strongest memory was seeing the rescue workers and their S&R dogs. In my line of work, we see animals contribute so much to our daily lives... the cow dog on the ranch, or the horse in the cattle pen. We know that animals have jobs, just like people. And, the spirit of those animals and their handlers as they searched for survivors was just incredible. Hearing stories of how handlers would hide so their dogs could find them, just so the dog would feel useful and not depressed after so long without something to find. Hearing about the dogs' needs, such as food, protective boots, etc., touched me. You could see the exhaustion in the rescue workers' eyes and in the eyes of their animals. But they wouldn't quit. It was hopeless to look, but they continued. That memory haunts me.
Unlike some of my neighbors, I have actual memories of the twin towers. When I was in high school, we took a trip to New York and visited them. We went up to the observation deck, we ate at the restaurant, we walked through the front lobby.... I have the pictures. Seeing those pictures now, in the face of the tragedy, is surreal.
I don't think there is one memory that stands out. It was all so horrific, and on such a grand scale that it isn't a single memory, but rather a giant ache in your heart. Your heart hurts, so you wonder why, then you rememer the planes and the sight of the towers falling, and the people streaming out of Manhattan, and the newscasts... and on and on, until your mind shuts it all out and goes back to quiet. And, then you realize your heart hurts and the cycle starts up again.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I live in the Heartland, rural America, land of wide open spaces and prairie. But even here we've seen the affects of 9/11.
The feedlots that once were wide open to visitors are now locking gates and checking IDs. The processing plants are more controlled....more secure. Our farmers and ranchers are even more wary of strangers than ever before. Our churches pray each Sunday for their sons and daughters in the military that are serving overseas.
The biggest affect has been on our local economy. We are rural, so when there is a downturn, we get hit hard. Most well-off farmers and ranchers have some investments to tide the family over during bad times. But, then the stock market went to hell, and stocks weren't worth what they should have been, and compounding it all was 3 to 4 straight years of drought in the High Plains. Bad combination, and that was just the producers who were well off to begin with. We've seen that the combination of the economy and drought have hit the farming community hard.
Now that we've made some progress on terrorism, I hope that we can put this behind us, and start to heal. I hope that my generation will follow in the footsteps of the men and women who lived through Pearl Harbor and remember Sept. 11 in quiet dignity... not in anger or revenge.... but dignity for the men and women killed needlessly, and for the families they left behind.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I heard about the first plane hitting the WTC tower as I pulled into the parking lot at work. I remember thinking it must have been some small, private plane and a horrible pilot error....so will they sue Cessna or Raytheoncompanies right here in my hometown.
I turned the radio on as soon as I got to my desk and when I heard the news of the second plane, went to the internet news sites and started to watch the story unfold. We really didn't accomplish much at work that day, everytime something new came across the news, we gathered around the computer to watch.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My daughter's Girl Scout Troop was meeting at our house that evening. We held the meeting, with the girls all seated around my kitchen table and watching the news on the small TV in the kitchen. The girls, 13 and 14 years old, of course had the hard questions of why would someone do something like this? how can someone be so evil? Trying to help them make some sense of a senseless act and to try to reassure them that wetheir parentsour country's leaderswould do everything we could to keep them safe...when we really didn't know if we could....is my strongest memory.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The immediate impact was not so unexpected. My sense of security was shaken. I shared in the surge of patriotism that followed, we flew our flag daily, not just on holidays, we gave to the Red Cross.
Living in and working in the Wichita, Kansas, area, where the major employer is Boeingas well as the other aircaft manufacturers and the many subcontractorsour local econmy has suffered and that has touched our lives in very direct ways.
While my husband and I have not been unemployedor feel particularly at risk of unemployment, we have friends and neighbors who have been unemployed. One of our volunteer projects is holiday help for families, distributing food and gifts. We have seen more families asking for help in the last two years as the long term effects of the downturn in airline travel nationwide has trickled down to impact our local economy.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I walked into my house after dropping off my children at school and going to the grocery store and turned on the TV. The news was on and I saw that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, but no one was sure what was happening at the moment; no one knew the enormity yet of what was occurring. Then the second plane hit. I have family in New York and Boston and immediately tried to call them. I couldn't get through to New York, but reached my sister in Boston. Then I finally reached my parents in New York. As I was talking to my mother, I suddenly looked at the TV and saw only one tower was standing. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I spent the rest of the day in front of the TV in tears. When I picked up my children at school, they didn't know what had happened, except that all the parents were crying. On the way home, I explained to them what had happened and they watched the horrific events with me over and over.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory is just feeling like it was unreal, that we were under siege as I first watched what happened in New York, then Washington, DC and then that field in Pennsylvania. The feeling of how could this possibly be happening here and why so many innocent lives had to be taken. The grief is the strongest emotional memory I have of that day.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
About a month later I wrote this poem which appeared in poeticvoices.com:
9-1-1
c 2001 Nancy Rechtman
On the last day of life as we knew it
Madness rained down from the sky
Horror took over our lives
The heavens let out a great cry.
In one moment of terrible evil
The earth shattered, blow after blow
Now a skeleton teeters above
The abyss gapes madly below.
Mountains of glass and of metal
Once towered so proudly, so grand
Collapsed in a fiery inferno
Entombed thousands with hatred's hand.
Paeans to hopes and to dreams
Lie mangled, so brutally lost
Shrouded in blankets of ashes and dust
At such an unbearable cost.
Our hearts are burning and tortured
Our souls fill with torment so cruel
The ache is so vast and unyielding
A kingdom where only anguish can rule.
Life upon life upon life now gone
So savagely sudden, no more.
We cry out in anger in fear and in rage
Our beings shake to the core.
Our tears flow freely in torrents
Transform into rivers of pain
Wash over our land in the knowledge
That what was will never be again.
But we see the heroes among us
Who emerge from the darkness so bleak
They light the way towards healing
And offer the pride that we seek.
For we are the steel
Though twisted and bent
And smoldering in the ruins
Our wills are of iron
Our souls writhe with pain
No bandage can cover the wounds.
But breath shall once again lift us
Like the Phoenix, we, too, shall rise
As we grasp onto those precious memories
Of our dear ones and silent good-byes.
Let our spirits rise up now in chorus
Let our eyes seek the heavens above
We are truly one nation united
Instead of breaking, we will heal now through love.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was on the 77th floor of one World Trade Center. My son Todd was on the 105th floor of the same tower. He had no chance to escape. He called his mother and told her not to worry that he was going to the stairs. He was very confident. She asked him "what about daddy". He said "I just spoke to him and he is OK". Todd had not spoken to me. He was protecting his mother at a moment of grave danger . Please visit his Web site to learn more about Todd's life and what we have done with family and friends to honor him.http://www.mybuddytodd.org
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I remember the firemen coming up the stairs and carrying heavy equipment. I asked them a to save the people above us. They were not afraid. I was trembling but I remembered February 26,1993 at 12:18 pm when I escaped from the first attack. I also recall when I was outside the towers looking back and seeing the flames. I walked for miles and a young man refused to leave me. I tried to call home but no phones worked. I heard the towers fell and did not beleive it until I got to 75th street at my daughter's apartment and saw what happenmed on tv.
LC Story: Affects

We lost our innocence. We lost our sense of security. We must not allow this evil to overcome us. I fight in my son's name and memory to have his spirit live on through his Foundation which helps childrfen who suffer from anxiety disorders. Todd overcame such a problem as a child.

LC Story
LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was in Austin, Texas. I was taking the bus and attempting to reach my storage locker. It was necessary for me to take two buses and then WALK to the storage site. My items were in storage for some time due to the fact I had been unable to obtain constant and safe housing. Due to CONSTANT problems with my bank I had a lot of cash BUT no identification.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Par for the course. This is the country that was unable to protect my minor child and myself (if, you could CALL what happened to me "protection") when I, as an Independent Fee Appraiser for the Veteran's Administration in Los Angeles, complained to the so-called proper authorities about irregularities concerning my work and the lack of co-operation and truthfulness of "individuals" from these organizations.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Where is my house, my home, my child, my dog, my cat, my career(that I worked for!), my belongings, ALL my legal rights et cetera? If this country had more people like me none of this would have ever happened! Certain individuals in this country were so interested in trying to make me something I am not and could never be in order to "feather" their own nests.
Bratislava, Slovakia, Pope John Paul II,9/11/03 "...a
society respectful of human life in all its
expressions that promotes the family as a place of
reciprocal love and growth of persons, that seeks the
common good and is attentive to the needs of the
weakest". . . .
"Do not be satisfied with the soul quest for economic
advantages. Great affluence, in fact, can also
generate great poverty."
Subject: 8/25/2003/Associated Press/Gina
Holland/Supreme Court Article/Miranda Rights
NYT, International, 8/23/03, ". . . Life on the
Run"
Article I, Section 19 of the Texas Constitution
states: "No citizen
of this state shall be deprived of life, liberty,
property, privileges
or immunities, or in any other manner disenfranchised,
except by
the due course of the law of the land."
It is the continuous flagrant actions of the following
two-faced
self-serving sneaks(on both sides)that causes these
and other types of monetary/legal shortfalls.
So justify this, if you can!
This "play for cash, food, hotel room(lodging)" is no
new thing.
If one wants to put someone into jail, cause trouble
even kill or injure a person
with no retaliation just go to your local
shelters(both religious
and non-religious). These low lifes get preference in
dealing with not only
their immediate needs, food, shelter, cash, but also a
consideration
on their so-called mental/physical state, employment
and any pending legal
problems/arrests. Misplace a file, letter(s), phone
call or bank
withdrawal in exchange for payback for services
rendered.
I guess if I was a
trans-sexual/racial/handicapped/disabled minority I
would get a better response. The fact that I was left
without money
or legal redress on a consistent basis doesn't appear
to be a concern to ANYONE!
I was an Independent Fee Appraiser for the Veterans
Administration
in Los Angeles, California and what is/was done to me
is not only
disgraceful, traumatic and extremely disgusting it is
a matter of
public record. I am able to speak with considerable
authority as to the lack of sensitivity to
a single self-sufficient working mother of a minor
child not on
welfare or ingesting, illegal or otherwise, drugs et
cetera. A person who not only
was a responsible homeowner but in the true sense of
the word a
"compassionate and caring" landlord. And, much to my
disadvantage,
as the record shows, a good and concerned citizen to
an ungrateful
two-timing/two-faced sniveling nation. A woman who,
under the guise
of National Security(FBI File 18903TA0), has been
denied the basic
necessities of life, limb, security and justice.
Let's talk about Drs. Frankenstein and unmentionable
Nazis who cloak
their activities by the bastardization and
prostitution of the Legal/Health
Care System for their own advancement.
An arrest in Austin, Texas, October 17,2001 on the
University of
Texas at Austin. Confinement in solitary for 45 days
in a highly litigated,
ill-constructed and unhealthful Criminal justice
Center. The transfer
to a mental hospital after being notified by the
mental health worker for the
sheriff's department that the Request for Personal
Recog. was signed
by a Judge "two weeks" prior to being transmitted to
me and after refusing a
Plea Bargain.
A convenient re-arrest periodically, in this case May
29, 2003 and
incarceration until July 23, 2003 and re-psych
evaluation. Crime
still the original University of Texas litigation and
the incorrect
Request for Personal Recog. paperwork plus another
convenient Criminal
Trespass and dubious criminal charge.(Booking
#03-22-724)
Such actions set a dangerous precedent if this is not
dealt with.
I am not and I repeat NOT an experimental specimen to
be subjected
to flagrant indecent mishandling and abuse. The fact
that I am
still alive and kicking and very healthy demonstrates
their total
ineptitude and why this country is experiencing the
difficulties
it is today. FBI File 18903TA0

Editorial Page
"But of course, nothing like this would ever happen to
a person of, uh,
consequence.
Shoddy lab work, shoddy legal counsel, shoddy appeals
and who knows how
many wrongful convictions and . . . "
Sincerely,
Carol Davidson
I used think an American Citizen with no FBI file!
I read your article in the Austin American
Statesman,12/15/03,Bullied Child Grew Into A
Dictator", Gee, how does this justify what was/is
being done to me?

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
When I heard the new of September 11th, I was taking a French exam. My class sat quietly working when we suddenly heard shouts from the another classroom. It was our British Literature teacher, he was yelling muffled shouts. We all thought he was acting out a play but we were all too wrong. He came into our telling the us what had happened. We did not even believe, not for a second. He walked over to the televison in the corner of the classroom and turned it on. We were all flooded with images more disturbing that I have yet to see again.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
I attended an all girls academy of the Sacred Heart, in Omaha, NE. When the news had flooded all around the school, the administration called us to the chapel. Nearly everyone was crying, I could not cry. I felt as though I should be, but I could not make the tears come. My heart was with the people all around the country, but my body was in a state of shock. After prayer they let us out early. I sat in the student center for a little while before I left. As I was walking out side I heard a crashing noise in the sky. I looked up and fighter jets, and inbetween was Air Force One. It was a sight that will stay with me forever.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
This event made me much more aware of the outside. I was a 14 years old, and I had never known war, nor horrible death, nor devastion. 9-11 opened my eyes to the world. I was lost but now I'm found, t'was blind but now I see.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at work as head cook in an elementary school kitchen, and one of the women came in for the 9:15 shift and told us that she might be confused, but she thought she heard that an airplane flew into the World Trade Center. At first we jokingly asked if they were making a remake of "King Kong". But there was an eerie pall in the kitchen, and although we have no access to television, somebody had a portable radio, and we started to listen.
Word spread from the main office to all staff to please keep a calm demeanor, and don't mention the news to the children, as everything was turmoil, and nobody knew what was really going on. We continued, however to listen to the radio during the morning, and everybody worked in silence.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
When I reached home, my husband was already there, and the television was on. When we heard later that day that the US carrier George Washington was going to NYC, the situation immediately became personal. Our son Teddy was a nuclear electrician on that aircraft carrier. We knew that Teddy was in NYC. At first, by the next morning,we saw newsclips of the "Dub", as the George Washington is called, in the mouth of the harbor. They flew air missions off the carrier for 19 days. They moved the ship out of the harbor to the entrance of the airstrips at JFK airport, 7 miles east of the harbor. During wartime, or political unrest, sailors can't call or e mail out to family. It may sound corny, but the New Yorkers down there were so scared, and rightfully so, that I took CNN up on its offer to send a short message to the people of NYC , and they would play the messages on their rotating messageboard. I sent something to the effect that "Our son is on the aircraft carrier in the harbor to help protect you."
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Well, these examples are certainly small potatoes compared to some, but as I said, I work in an elementary school in Upstate New York, near Lake Ontario. The dairy that supplies our schools with milk sent all they had down to the kitchens that fed the rescue workers for a day. The children were proud to help in that way. We collected flannel shirts and socks for the workers to change into after their shifts searching for survivors. We had a list of school members, staff and children alike who were in the military at the present time, so people could think good thoughts for them(Prayer isn't allowed in school), and although we are one of the poorest districts in New York State, we took up a penny collection, and raised almost $700.00 for the Red Cross. The children's fear at the constant and horrific news was channeled into doing positive things to try to help the situation. Volunteering and Good Citizenship are qualities that will serve these children well all their lives.
We are a military family, and beside our son who was on the George Washington, one of our other sons was in the Navy, activating Naval Reservists, and my brother is a Navy SEAL. Our daughter had just finished 10 years in the Army. Although it hasn't lasted, the newfound feeling of national patriotism was a welcome sight for us. We, as their parents, are from the Viet Nam era, and remember the awful way our military vets were treated in that time.
As I write this, on the day that Saddam Hussein has been captured, I can only hope that the supportive feeling for our troops rises again. Since that time, we also have a son-in-law who is a commander of a Bradley Unit on the North/South Korean Border. Whether or not citizens agree with political decisions made in Washington, they need to remember that our soldiers and sailors are in harm's way following these orders.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was a nuclear electrician's mate on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73). In early September, the ship was scheduled to be degaussed, a regularly scheduled procedure to reduce the magnetic signature and regulate the ship's compasses. The procedure was cancelled, and the brass decided to use the sea time to run reactor drills from Sept. 9-13. The ship went to sea with no ammunition, no airwing, and no aircraft; They were not needed for the drills. The morning of the 11th, I was just going off watch in the reactor plant, and decided to check the maintenance schedule in the office. As I opened the door, there was complete silence. The first plane had just hit, and the t.v. just happened to be on cnn. It seemed unreal, and as I stared, the second plane hit. Emotions ran through me in waves, starting with disbelief, then sadness, and finally settling on rage. I was somewhat relieved when the order was given to set sail to NY. The GW made turns for high speed, slowing down only momentarily to onload ammunition, and peices of airwing 6 from the USS John F. Kennedy. We arrived early in the morning on the 12th, and as dawn rose, the George Washington was just outside the harbor. An airborne blanket of F/A 18's, F-14's, and Seahawk helicopters provided what little relief we could offer. I rose early from an uneasy sleep to look at the sight from the relative safety of the hangar bay. The skyline was covered by an obscuring cloud of smoke. The GW provided air security in the area for the next 19 days.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
Watching the second plane hit on live tv.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
It's obvious when you walk into an airport. People are no longer allowed to accompany loved ones to their gate, or meet them as they get off the plane. X-rays and metal detectors are everywhere. Heightened security is a must theese days. But the terrorists failed to learn from other's mistakes. The U.S. lies down for nobody, and we'll fight back with every resource possible. Personally, I will continue to live my life the way I want to. I feel if my lifestyle or opinions change due to 9/11, the terrorists have accomplished their goal.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
On September 11,2001 I was in my dorm room at Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, Mi. I woke up to the man on the radio saying there has been a terrible plane crash. That a plane has crashed into the World Trade Center. I did not think anything about it, just another plane crash I said to myself then went to my political science class. After class I arrived back at my dorm and my roomate told me that we were under attack and that is when I ran to the tv to see the second plane hit the second tower. We watched the news the rest of the day and I was so sad and scared. I wanted to be back home in Algonac, Mi with my family and loved ones. I just wanted to hold my loved ones. I could not just hop in the car and go home I had to stay at school and I was not able to drive for 3 hours home. So I did the next best thing. I called my family to say I love them. Before my next class started I found out that they closed the campus down for the day and all classes were cancelled. The first time my college has closed down. The rest of the day and week everyone talked of the terrorist attacks. This memory is forever stuck in my head.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of that day is watching the towers collapse.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was coming back from a walk through the Capitol grounds. I had my headphones on and I heard that the Pentagon had been hit. I told myself "that's not what I just heard." I kept walking and I saw people running from the Capitol and an airplane overhead. I ran back to my office, informed everyone what happened, but they already knew. I gathered my items and left for the day.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
My mother woke me with a phone call: "Something is wrong in New York. A plane..."
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
When the tower collapsed, it didn't register right away what had really happened. The sky there... It took several minutes for it to sink in that the tower had collapsed, and then another tower fell.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Similarly, it took a week for me to return to my art. After a week without writing a word, one morning I exploded with some 6000 words about seeking creative solutions, trying to find alternatives to the calls for revenge, for more terror in response. That essay freed me, somehow, enough to write a poem that afternoon about hope, healing, and home:
The Difference Between Repair and Reconstruction
As I sleep, this house creaks
under the weight of wood on wood,
the crankiness of masonry tile as it grinds
against itself on the roof, like a pumice stone dragged along
the edge of a tooth, the weakness
of bones remembered in such sounds. I should
thank this day for opening these wounds, for reminding
me of what is needed to either start over or repair: the longing
for wholeness that urges soft tissue to speak its
promise to the torn skin beside, to whisper that it could
find a way to bind again, not as new, but stronger for finding
again the pulse through the pain, the cry, the first strains of song.

LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory of the day was at the DOubletree Hotel Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia--just feet from the Pentagon. The burning smell coming through the building's ventilation system was unavoidable for a few days. The atmosphere was somber and people were in huddles discussing whether or not anyone knew of persons who may have been in either the Pentagon or in New York.
There were several persons in the hotel on business and many of whom flew into the area. Planes were grounded and people were trying to get out of that hotel. The sight of frustration was disturbing to me. However, the hotel was most accommodating and very generous to everyone there.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I graduated from Howard University's Graduate School of Arts and Sciences with a Master of Arts degree in May of 2001. Obviously, I was excited and did not take looking for a job as serious as I should have during the summer. Having whisked through undergraduate education and then a graduate degree with no real job experience posed problems for me. I needed concrete job experience just to find a decent job, especially in D. C.
Subsequently, I took a job that would give me access to the city and enough income to support me as I began the job hunt that is normal after such events in the lives of young adults in similar situations. Soon after, there was September 11th.
The night of the attacks, I remember sitting in a chair at the Doubletree Hotel Crystal City located on Army Navy Drive in Arlington, Virginia and just feet away from the Pentagon. I'd taken a job with a local university's Student Affairs and Residence Life division. That Fall semester the university experienced a sharp rise in numbers and ended up housing nearly 300 students in the hotel. I was a live-in counselor supporting the Residence Life division and assigned to assist the students locally on behalf of the university. There was a small team persons assigned to the situation by the university, so I wasn't alone.
I remember feeling so overwhelmed of the situation. There I was, helpless for several students who had questions, helpless to many parents who had concerns of safety regarding their children, and helpless to countless faces in the hotel who were wondering what had happened that day. It was awful.
My plans to live a little, to take a break, to conveniently look for a job...in the appropriate style had come to a terrible hault. Immediate thoughts of the poverty entered my head. Job cuts were far from reality, but in the back of my mind and the possibility of finding a job elsewhere was very bleek. There was a lot on my mind.
September 11th changed my life because the same job I had during the attacks, I still have. Jobs have been scarce and organizations have shaved, trimmed and cut where necessary making it hard for a person with little experience, yet two academic degrees to compete. This has not been a time of convenience or to waste resources. Nor has this been a time to chance for any organizations that would offers jobs for a person with my credentials. It has concretely impacted my outlook.
I have become increasingly timid and cautious of this area of the country. Living in that location and near the airport (Reagan-National) has affected me as well. I have never been a fan of flying, going up and coming down. Before, I few quite often. Now, I have not flown since the Summer of 2001.
Personally, September 11, 2001 changed me forever.

Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was at working at a speech and hearing center in Columbus, OH listening to the local NPR station when I heard a report that a plane had crashed into the first tower. I immediately thought it was a small aircraft that somehow became lost and hit the building. I went up to the 4th floor and watched the news reports when I saw the second plane hit the second tower. I knew then that we were under attack. I spent the majority of the day providing analysis of why these specific planes were used from these specific airports and why these structures were targeted as I spent 15 years doing intelligence work in the Navy.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
The collapse of the towers was perhaps the strongest memory of this day or any day in my life.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
The events of September 11, 2001 had a brief unifying effect and an equally brief appreciation for our Service members. Unfortunately, the unification was based on existing fear, hatred, and distrust of anyone that even resembled someone from the Middle East. The actions that the Bush Administration conducted reminded me of the terrible policies adopted by the Roosevelt Administration after Pearl Harbor was attacked. The country has returned to "normal" in many ways, but the feelings of hatred, fear, and distrust of those of Middle Eastern descent is still at an all time high and is constantly being fueled by those in policy making positions to push their agendas. For the record, I am not Middle Eastern and so I have not personally felt the backlash, but I have observed the activities that have occurred in this Nation since 9/11/01.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
That day started out like any other day. I barely got to school on time and was already about to fall asleep halfway through my first class when another student came in. Nobody paid much attention when she started talking to the teacher, but when the TV came on and everyone started to realize what was happening, we paid very close attention. At first I didn't believe what was happening. I knew it was real, but the only thing I thought was that this can't be real. The whole class sat there silent, just glued to the screen. We listened to everything being said. We'd switch channels back and forth just in case we might miss something, but it was all the same. Everything was the same, what was happening was real. That was the craziest realization, that what I was watching was happening to real people. The rest of the day didn't matter; every class was watching what was happening. I'll always remeber what one teacher said to my class. He said "You'll remember this day for the rest of your life, you will know what you were doing, who was with you and what was said". He was right.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
There are actually two memories that are the strongest of that day. The first is when I realized that what was happening was real. The second is seeing people jump out of the towers on live television and knowing there was nothing that could have saved their lives.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
I think it has made us a more cautious nation. I believe it helped us realize weak points in our defense, but as a nation i don't believe it affected our country the way I believe the terrorist wanted it. It did hurt but it by no means "broke us". We'll remeber the people who died that day and be saddened because of the enormous loss of each of their lives and we'll remeber the terrorist with anger at what they had done, but I don't believe it had the intended affect. With me personally, I'm still trying to figure that out.

LC Story: Story
Where were you on September 11, 2001 when you heard the news? (Please share your experience of learning of the events and what you did afterwards.)
I was sitting in my classroom doing a math problem when my principal came over the announcements. He said a plane had hit the World Trade Center. No big deal, I thought... just a freak accident. About 20 minutes later I was called out of school to go home with my mom. I got my books and she had a frightened look on her face, so my sisters and I hurried along. She had a very solemn look on her face as she told us the Pentagon and both World Trade Centers had been hit by planes. She said no one knew what it was or why, but that we needed to pray. We said prayers all the way home. We got home and I sat with my mom to watch the news. Slowly we got more and more information. I watched in horror as the cameras focused in on people jumping from the bulidings to get away from the fire. I watched in disbelief as the Trade Centers came crashing down and the city filled with smoke and debris. I will never, ever forget those images.
LC Story: Memory
What is your strongest memory of that day?
My strongest memory is talking to my family on the phone. We live 20 minutes from DC, so they were very concerned about us. There was a fear over this area that another plane would hit the White House or the CIA-which is almost directly next to my High School. Around here we had to comfort those far away that we would stay safe-and to make sure they knew we loved them in case something did happen. I'll never forget their worried voices and constant calls to make sure my family is safe. I'll also never forget the tears in my eyes as they estimated how many had been murdered- thankfully lower in reality, but still unbelievable. That sense of disbelief will never be felt in the same way again.
LC Story: Affects
How do you perceive that the events of September 11, 2001 have affected this country and/or you personally?
Instead of falling apart like the terrorists wanted, Americans stood and continue to stand strong. I have never seen a more patriotic country as in the days after September 11. I too have never felt a stronger sense of pride to be an American. We may not have as many flags hanging from our doors, but that doesn't mean the pride of being an American doesn't live on. It also doesn't mean we've stopped fighting the terrorists. And it doesn't mean we will ever forget those 3,000 innocent lives torn away that day. We remember.
