Annotation: Because of the overwhelming outpouring of community sentiment and desire to memorialize the tragic losses that occurred on September 11, 2001 the USDA Forest Service has responded with the “Living Memorials Project.” This initiative will invoke the resonating power of trees to bring people together and create lasting, living memorials to the victims of terrorism, their families, communities, and the nation. Cost-share grants will support the design and development of community projects in the New York City metropolitan area, SW Pennsylvania, and the Washington DC metropolitan area. In order to meet the additional emphasis on memorial tree planting in these areas, the Forest Service Living Memorials Project will assist state forestry agencies and communities in developing plans and planting trees. The Living Memorials Project will bring Americans together and create special places to remember, reflect, and heal as well as have a long lasting effect on the urban natural resources that must be managed and sustained over time.
